What are the most popular organic products?

The fastest-growing industry is organic food. There is still much to be done, even though we have come so far from our roots.

Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.

They are also generally more expensive. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.

The results showed that organic food is increasing in popularity. Between 2011 and 2012 the number of Americans buying organic food increased nearly 50%.

According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.

Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.

That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.

In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.


Why should I go organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. When buying food, you must make wise choices.

The Environmental Working Group has the following tips for choosing "cleaner" food.

Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

Look for USDA organic labels on meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, and honey.

Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."

Be sure to read all ingredient labels. If an ingredient isn't listed, it may be added during processing.

It is better to eat fresh meats than canned or frozen. Canned and frozen foods can often have lower nutritional content like high fructose syrup.

What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?

Organic products are grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic manipulation. They are free-range and come from clean water sources. The term "organic" means they do not contain any chemicals or additives. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.

Natural refers to the way food was grown. It's used to describe foods that have not been altered into their final form (e.g. fruits). Natural foods are often more fresh than others, because they haven’t been processed with heat, radiation or chemical preservations. Some people think natural does not necessarily mean healthy. Experts aren't sure if there is much to be different between organic and traditional foods. Both types of food have been tested for safety and quality. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.

Most grocery stores now carry organic meats and poultry. You can find organic meat, poultry, eggs, and seafood at your local market. Some companies sell only organic products. Other companies have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified are some of the options.

These products should not be consumed if you are pregnant. Unborn babies and infants can be affected by pesticides.
