Frequently Asked Questions

Is organic food healthier?

There are two types of foods; those we grow ourselves and those we buy from someone else. While there are exceptions, the general answer is yes to both. Organic food is healthier than conventional food because it doesn’t contain harmful chemicals, pesticides or herbicides. It also doesn’t contain preservatives or genetically modified organisms.

You can find organic food in supermarkets across North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Many grocery stores now stock organic food. This makes it easier to shop organic.

Organic food is healthier and tastes better because it contains more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients. Organics are also grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, so they don't pollute our soils and water supplies.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices and requires farmers to follow strict guidelines to ensure that organic produce is safe to eat. There are currently more than 30,000,000 acres of US farmland which have been designated organic.

Organic food is often cheaper than traditional food. Customers pay less for the same amount in calories, protein and nutrients. Organic farms are able to charge lower prices for their crops because they don't have to purchase expensive chemical inputs like insecticides and fungicides.

According to the Environmental Working Group organic food is 10 percent cheaper per pound than conventionally manufactured food. Organic food is an option if you want to improve your health and the health of your family.

Organic food has been a popular alternative for standard American diets. Although many may think that organic food is only available at specialty markets and gourmet restaurants, this isn't true. You can easily purchase organic food in regular grocery stores throughout the United States.

Recent years have seen a significant increase in organic food sales. In the US, organic food sales reached $43Billion in 2012, an increase of $21Billion in 2007.

What is the difference between organic food and inorganic?

Organic food is free from pesticides, chemical fertilizers and sewage sludge. It can also be grown without irradiation or genetic modification. Organic farming practices improve soil health and water quality as well as animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.

"Organic" and "natural" are often interchangeable. But, "natural" does not necessarily refer to organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.

Because organic produce contains fewer harmful chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers than conventional produce it is more nutritious. In addition, organic farmers do not use artificial fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or pesticides.

What is inorganic?

Organic food is made without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals can be harmful for your health.

Organic food can be grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides herbicides, fungicides, and other harmful substances. These chemicals can cause harm to animals and humans.

Inorganic food can include meat, fish eggs, buttermilk cheese, buttermilk, yogurt, honey grains, vegetables, fruits spices, and herbs.

The term organic refers to the way an agricultural product is grown. Organic farming employs natural methods and soil amendments for growing crops. Conventional agriculture uses pesticides or fertilizers.

Foods labeled as organic must meet strict guidelines by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). All organic food must comply with the National Organic Program Standards. This means that it must not contain prohibited materials like antibiotics, growth hormones or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as well as industrial solvents. Additionally, organic food must be raised without toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers, sewage sludges, or ionizing radiation.

What are the most loved organic products?

The fastest-growing industry is organic food. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.

Organic products will be the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.

But they also tend to be higher priced. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.

These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.

While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.

Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.

According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.

This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.

The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.

What are organic foods?

Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. There are no growth hormones used and animal testing is not performed. These crops can grow naturally so that farmers don't have to use pesticides or weed control.

Organic farming practices also maintain soil quality by reducing erosion and conserving water resources. Organic foods are healthier than conventional foods because they have more nutrients. Organic products are typically higher in fiber and lower in fat and calories than conventionally produced ones.

What are organic products that can be used on the skin?

Organic skincare products do not contain synthetic chemicals like parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, petroleum jelly or petrolatum.

Organic skincare products do not contain artificial colours, fragrances or preservatives.

They are designed to promote healthy skin, prevent premature wrinkles, heal injuries after they happen, and support overall wellbeing.

Some standard terms you may see when shopping for organic products:

  • Paraben Free is a grouping of chemicals that are used to maintain certain cosmetic products safe, but can be toxic when consumed in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free - the product does not have added fragrance or essential oils.
  • Cruelty Free - No animals were injured during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients – The ingredient is naturally derived either from a plant or an animal.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian - the ingredients are either vegan or vegetarian.
  • Gluten-Free means that the formulation was free of gluten.
  • Non-Toxic: The product does not contain toxic substances, carcinogens or any other harmful compounds that could cause harm to your health.
  • Biodegradable - the product will break down into harmless components when discarded.
  • Pesticide-Free - No pesticides have been used in the growing and harvesting process.
  • GMO-Free refers to the fact that no ingredients in the product contain genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic means all ingredients were grown in ways that preserve the soil, water and air.

Statistics

  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

5 Reasons You Should Buy Organic Products

Organic foods are free from pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. They do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or radioactive ingredients. Their production methods do not involve sewage sludge or industrial solvents. During the growth process, food is kept clean from any contamination. It is completely free from artificial preservatives, additives, and other harmful chemicals. It does not contain hormones or antibiotics. They are also produced in conditions that preserve their nutritional value and freshness over longer periods.

  1. Health benefits. Organic produce contains fewer chemicals than nonorganic produce. This means that organic produce is less likely cause allergic reactions and sensitivities. This also means that you are consuming less toxins and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Organically grown produce doesn't require synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. Organic farms are typically located far away form areas of high pollution and where conventional growth is difficult because it requires so much effort. This helps reduce pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming is based on soil fertility and not chemical fertilizers. This results in soils that are healthier and have higher levels of organic matter. It is better for soil health to rotate crops and allow the land to fallow regularly. Farm animals that eat only grasses, grains and no antibiotics develop strong immune systems.
  4. Taste. The taste of conventional fruits and veggies is often bland. This is because they are picked at the peak of ripeness. They then get shipped long distances to their destination. Organic produce tastes sweeter and more rich because it was picked when it was still young.
  5. Nutrition. GMOs, BPA, and other harmful chemicals are often found in conventional processed foods. You can avoid them by sticking with whole foods such meat, fish, eggs, seafood, seeds and beans, as well as fruits, veggies, herbs, and vegetables.
