Frequently Asked Questions

Does Thai use ginger?

The answer is yes. Traditional Thai cuisine uses ginger extensively. Ginger is often used to make stir-fries and soups. It is also used in desserts, drinks, such a lassis.

Ginger is native to China, Japan, and Korea, and its origins date back more than 5,000 years. It is thought that it originated in Southeast Asia, where its medicinal uses were cultivated.

Ginger is well-known for its ability to relieve nausea and stimulate digestion. It may even help prevent migraines. Ginger is also known to reduce muscle spasms and joint pains as well as treating arthritis.

Ginger is most often fresh in Thailand. It is sliced into thin strips and then dried before being stored for later use. From Asian markets, ginger root can be bought in cans and jars.

How to Store Spices

Keep them out of the sun and heat.

If you want to keep spices fresh for a long time, place them into a dark cupboard. This will help preserve the spices and prevent oxidation.

Your spices should be kept in cool and dry areas, away from direct sunlight. You can lose the aroma and flavor of your spice if it is near a heater or window.

Spices are best stored in an airtight glass jar or tin. Avoid storing spices in plastic containers.

Always check the seal after opening and resealing, as humidity can cause spoilage.

Don't throw out any spice leftovers. Don't throw them away, instead use them in new recipes. To prolong their shelf life you can freeze them.

What is the difference between cooking Whole and Ground Spices? Ground Spices?

There is no difference in cooking with whole spices and cooked with ground spices. All spices can be ground once they have been harvested. The quality is the same.

The price difference is however significant. Whole spices can be more expensive due to the labor involved in their processing. However, the flavor is worth it.

If you purchase whole spices in bulk, you might get an additional discount. For example, you might receive a discount if you buy an entire bag of cinnamon sticks.

It is the same for cardamom and cloves as well as ginger, ginger, nutmeg, and ginger. You might be able to save money by buying these spices in bulk.

Whole spices also last longer than ground spices. Ground spices lose their potency rapidly due to oxygenation.

The main reason we recommend whole spices over dried is that they can add lots of flavor to recipes.

You can make delicious curry using whole turmeric, instead of ground turmeric. To make a spice mixture for chicken dishes, you can grind whole coriander seed.

The process of grinding spices takes a lot of time. If you're buying whole spices it makes sense for you to buy large quantities. That way, you won't run out of spices too fast.

Almond Flour vs. Almond Meal: What's the Difference?

An almond meal can be used as an alternative to almond flour. It can also be used in cooking and baking.

Almond flour might also contain gluten, which can make it hard to digest. Avoid gluten-free food if you have celiac disease, or any other digestive disorder.

Almond flour isn’t considered a superfood per se but it does contain healthy fats, fibre and protein and no cholesterol.

The almond meal provides nutritional benefits such as magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese. It also contains vitamin A, B1 (thiamin), C, and folate.

Almond flour, made from almonds contains monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oil. Both help to lower LDL (bad), and increase HDL levels.

Almond flour also contains antioxidants like phenolics and flavonoids. These compounds protect against free radical-induced oxidative harm.

A study published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry found that almond flour had antioxidant activity equivalent to that of blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates, and red wine grape juice.

Almond flour is usually sold alongside almond milk, fortified with additional nutrients.

What are the 7 Indian spices?

Indian spices are a group of spices used in Indian food. They typically include cardamom, cumin, coriander, turmeric, fenugreek, ginger, and asafoetida (also known as hing). They enhance flavour and aroma of dishes by blending with natural ingredients like meats and vegetables. The unique flavour profiles created by spices are what make Indian cooking special.

Cardamom is sweet and pungent with hints ginger and citrus. It is commonly used to flavour rice dishes like biryani and curries. Cumin is a spice with an earthy smell and a rich, nuanced flavour. It is commonly added to curries and meat dishes, as well as dals. Coriander adds a delicate nuttiness and sweet citrus aroma to dishes. It is used often to season vegetables and lentils.

Turmeric is a spice that has an earthy flavor. It can be mixed with mustard, spices and pepper hints. This spice is often used in curries, and other dishes. It also has a golden hue. Fenugreek has an earthy aroma, a slight bitter flavor, and earthy tones. It is often used in seasoning meat dishes like kebabs, curries, and kebabs. It is spicy and pungent with citrus hints. It adds a spicy kick to dishes like soups and chutneys. Asafoetida (hing), has a strong flavor and pungent smell that can be used in place of onion and garlic in certain recipes.

These spices together create unique flavors that make Indian food so special.

Statistics

  • It has been estimated that around 1,000 tons of pepper and 1,000 tons of other common spices were imported into Western Europe each year during the Late Middle Ages. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Their 14 to 20 percent essential oil content means that cloves have the highest concentration of aroma compounds of any spice. (masterclass.com)
  • According to the McCormick Science Institute, indigenous Indian spices were cultivated as early as the 8th century BC in the gardens of Babylon. (spicecravings.com)

How To

How to decide what spices to buy?

It is important to know how you can choose the right spices and herbs to cook. There are many options available, so how do you choose which ones to add in your pantry?

Three main factors should be considered when selecting spices: price, shelf life and flavour profile. You can choose to use different flavour profiles depending on whether your cooking involves meat, poultry or fish, vegetables and pasta. Once you have chosen a category, you can narrow down your choices by taking into account these differences.

Also, shelf lives can vary widely. Some spices last forever, while others expire quickly. Cayenne pepper has a long shelf life, while oregano is only good for two months. Then there's the price. The price of spices can vary from $1 per tablespoon to over $100 per ounce. This means you have to strike the right balance between quality and cost.

Also, consider whether organic or not organic ingredients. Organic products have fewer pesticides and chemicals that conventional products, which is better for your health as well as the environment. They can be more expensive, so it's important to weigh the costs and the benefits.

Online shopping is the best option to find the right spices. Online retailers provide detailed information on each product, including ingredient lists, pricing, reviews, and ratings.

Once you've narrowed your list, you can order directly from the retailer. When you have received your items, make sure to keep them in an airtight container.
