Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.

Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. You'll notice that organic food consumption has increased steadily since 2009.

According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.

This increase is due to consumers' demand for healthier foods. It is why organic food sales are growing across all ages.

However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely than baby boomers to buy organic foods. Young adults below 35 years of age account for 25%.


Is organic a guarantee that the product is pesticide-free

Organic food does not contain pesticides or chemicals and is therefore chemical-free. This means that organic foods are not subject to chemical pesticides or fertilizers.

Because organic produce does not contain harmful additives it has more nutrients that conventionally produced foods.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP) requires farmers to follow strict guidelines for growing crops certified as organic.

These guidelines include soil preparation, crop rotating, pest control and water conservation.

Organic farming techniques also contribute to healthy ecosystems that benefit wildlife as well as natural habitats.


What are organic fruits and vegetables?

Organic food does not contain pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Organic foods also have more nutrients such as vitamins C, E and K plus omega-3 fatty acid. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.

Organic foods are made using sustainable agricultural practices, which protect soil quality and promote biodiversity. They are free of toxic chemicals, irradiation and sewage effluent.

Many organic products are not associated with produce. They include dairy and meat, poultry, eggs baked goods, pet food, household cleaning supplies, and personal care products.

The USDA defines "organic" as that crops being raised according to strict rules set forth by federal government standards. Non-organic methods cannot be used by farmers to grow these foods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.

The farmer must also follow the guidelines for how much fertilizer and insecticide he uses throughout the growing season. He must also rotate his fields among different crops. GMOs, synthetic insecicides, artificial growth hormones or synthetic fertilizers can't be used by farmers.

Fruits and vegetables labelled "100% organic" meet all the requirements above. But not all farms will label their products 100% organic. That would confuse consumers. Instead, they will label their product as "made with organic ingredients. "


How can I determine if my produce was organic?

These three labels are essential if you want to be certain that you are purchasing organic produce.

USDA Organic Certified – Produced by USDA and certified as 100% organic.

Certified Naturally Grown: Produce that has been grown in accordance with organic practices, but has yet to receive certification from USDA.

Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.

These labels are used to indicate that the product meets specified criteria.

  • The animal is never given any hormones
  • No growth-promoting drugs
  • No feed additives

Organic food must not contain toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage sludges.

Some people believe organic farming to be more environmentally friendly. There are ethical concerns regarding farm workers and animals. This is why some people choose organic products.

Although organic foods tend to be more expensive than regular ones, prices can vary depending on where they are located. The price of organic food is affected by several factors. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. Another factor is the cost of inputs, labour and materials required for organic agriculture. The cost of transportation, marketing, and taxes are just a few other factors. In Europe, for instance, the average price for organic food in Europe is 10% higher than its regular price.
