Frequently Asked Questions

Is organic the same as pesticide-free?

Organic food is free from pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This means there is little or no exposure to chemicals such as fertilizers and herbicides.

Organic produce contains more nutrients and is healthier than conventionally manufactured foods, as it does not contain any harmful additives.

The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), requires that farmers follow strict guidelines when growing organic crops.

These guidelines include soil preparation, crop rotation, pest control, water conservation, and harvesting practices.

Organic farming techniques also contribute to healthy ecosystems that benefit wildlife as well as natural habitats.

What is the difference in organic and non-organic foods?

Organic food is made without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Organic farming practices promote soil health, water quality and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are grown with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and sewage sludge. Irradiated foods are treated with radiation; genetically modified organisms (GMO) are created through biological engineering techniques.

Sometimes, the term "natural", is used interchangeably with "organic." Natural does not always mean organic. There are also products labelled "natural" which may contain synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is typically more nutritious than conventional produce because the soil contains fewer harmful chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers don't use any artificial fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics.

What are organic products for the skin?

Organic skincare products don't contain any synthetic chemicals such as parabens or phthalates.

Organic skincare products are also free of artificial colours, fragrances, preservatives, emulsifiers, GMOs, petrochemicals, animal testing (except cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

They also help to preserve healthy skin and prevent premature aging.

These are some of the terms that you will see when you shop for organic products

  • Paraben Free- These are chemicals that help to keep certain cosmetics stable. But, they can also be toxic if taken in large quantities.
  • Fragrance-Free - the product does not have added fragrance or essential oils.
  • Cruelty-Free--No animals were hurt in the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients are ingredients that have been naturally extracted from plants or animals.
  • Vegetarian/Vegetarian - All ingredients are vegan or vegetarian.
  • Gluten-Free - this means that gluten was removed from the formulation.
  • Non-Toxic - The product doesn't contain toxins, carcinogens, or other dangerous compounds that could harm your health.
  • Biodegradable - the product will break down into harmless components when discarded.
  • Pesticide-Free: No pesticides used during growing or harvesting.
  • GMO-Free refers to the fact that no ingredients in the product contain genetically modified organisms.
  • Certified Organic means that all of the ingredients in the formula were grown using methods that protect the soil, water, air, wildlife, and farmers.

What are the top organic products?

The fastest-growing industry is organic food. But even though we've come a long way from our roots, there is still much room for growth.

Organic products are the future. Organic products are safer, more sustainable, and cheaper for consumers.

But they also tend to be higher priced. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.

The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. Between 2011-2012, nearly half of Americans shopped for organic foods.

The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. The U.S. now produces 9% of its agricultural output from organic food.

Organic food is definitely on the rise, but it still seems expensive for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.

However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.

According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.

This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.

However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.

What are organic food products?

Organic produce is produced without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. There is no use of growth hormones and no animal testing. These crops can naturally grow, so no chemicals are used by farmers to combat pests or weeds.

Organic farming methods also help to preserve soil quality, reduce erosion, and conserve water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic products are typically higher in fiber and lower in fat and calories than conventionally produced ones.

Statistics

  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?

Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, cover crops, composting animal manure, recycling wastewater, and integrated pest management (IPM).

In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. NOP regulations ensure organic agricultural products conform to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. In addition, the NOP rules mandate that organic products must be free from prohibited substances, including pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, irradiation, sewage sludge, industrial waste, and heavy metals.

There are two types available in the U.S. for producers who want their products to be labeled "organic". One for farmers and ranchers, and one for manufacturers. Both programs require annual audits of operations to verify compliance with rigorous standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. All three organizations provide third-party verification of farms' adherence to strict guidelines regarding environmental stewardship, labour practices, and livestock care.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service in 2013, organic agriculture generated $4.7 billion in revenue. In 2013, organic agriculture accounted for $4.7 billion in sales. This represents a 23-percent increase over 2009. This period saw a 12 percent increase in grocery store sales. Spending on organic produce directly increased by 29.9%, while meat, poultry eggs, and seafood spending grew only by 1%.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. A Health Affairs study also found that organic food consumers are less likely to develop health problems such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, heart disease, depression, and other diseases.

Even though there is no evidence organic foods cause or treat diseases, some studies show that they can improve overall health by reducing pesticide and other contaminants exposure. One example is the conclusion reached by a review of 31 studies, published in 2010, that organically reared beef was significantly less toxic than conventionally-raised beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.

The Environmental Working Group released a report in 2014 that analyzed data from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. They found that there was a decrease in foodborne illness due to E.coli, salmonella, listeria moncytogenes or campylobacter. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
