Almond Flour vs. Almond Meal: What's the Difference?

Almond meal can be substituted for almond flour and is versatile enough to be used in baking, cooking and even making nut-free meals.

Almond flour could also contain gluten making it difficult for some people to digest. It is important to avoid gluten-free products if you have celiac or other digestive disorders.

Almond flour is made from almonds and contains monounsaturated fat acids. Almond oil, however, contains polyunsaturated oils. Both types lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and increase HDL(good cholesterol).

Almond flour also contains antioxidants like phenolics and flavonoids. These compounds help to prevent oxidative damage from free radicals.

A study published by the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry revealed that almond flour had an antioxidant activity equal to that of blueberries.

Almond flour is typically sold along with almond milk, which is fortified to add additional nutrients.


What is the difference between curry and curried?

There is no difference between the spellings. Both words refer the same thing: Indian food that uses meats and vegetables along with different seasonings.

Curry is derived in Hindi from kari, which means to rub. This refers the way that the spice mix is applied onto the food. Curried foods are typically cooked until browned.

Although curried dishes used to be reserved for special occasions, today they are enjoyed all over India. They include chicken, beef and lamb as well as fish, vegetables and rice.

Curried dishes can be served alongside plain white or brown rice. You can also add raita (a yogurt sauce), or chutney (a sweet relish).

Fenugreek has a rich aroma, earthy tones, and a slightly bitter flavour. It is often used to season meat dishes like kebabs and curries. Ginger is spicy and pungent, with hints citrus. It adds the perfect kick to dishes such as curries, chutneys, and soups. Asafoetida (hing), has a strong flavor and pungent smell that can be used in place of onion and garlic in certain recipes.

How do I decide which spices I want to buy?

Knowing how to choose the best herbs and spices for your dishes is essential to being a good cook. There are hundreds of choices, so where can you start when choosing which spices to add to your kitchen?

When choosing spices, there are three things you should consider: the flavour profile, shelf-life, and cost. Flavour profiles differ depending on whether you're cooking meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, beans, grains, pasta, eggs, dessert, bread, etc. So once you've decided on a category, you'll need to narrow down your choices based on these differences.

The shelf life of spices can also vary. Some spices keep forever, while some others are prone to deterioration quickly. For example, cayenne pepper is good for years and oregano lasts only two months. Also, the price. Spices can range anywhere from $1 per tablespoon to more than $100 per ounce. This means that spice prices can vary widely.

You'll also want to determine whether you prefer organic or non-organic ingredients. Organic products have fewer pesticides and chemicals that conventional products, which is better for your health as well as the environment. However, they often cost more, so you'll need to weigh those costs against the benefits.
