What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

Look for USDA-certified organic labels. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. You will find the USDA Organic seal on all boxes, cartons and cans.

But organic food offers more than just health benefits. We all know the negative effects that processed foods can have on our health. You might not know this, but organic fruits and vegetables don't have to be treated with chemicals. It means that organic fruits and vegetables taste better, last longer, and are brighter.

That's why eating organic matters so much. Because it's not only healthy for you, it's healthier for the world.


Does organic mean it is pesticide-free?

What you should know about organic food

Organic foods are plants and animals grown without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or additives. They are produced without genetic engineering or the application of ionizing radiation. Food must not contain artificial colours, flavour enhancers or preservatives. It cannot contain genetically modified organisms.

The term "organic", as it is commonly known, was first used by Justus von Loig in 1845. He coined the phrase "organisch", which means life-giving, to describe manure's properties. The term organic is often associated with food production. Organic means the product has only natural substances like proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that are found in nature.

In the past decades, the consumption of organic products has grown dramatically worldwide. Recent statistics indicate that approximately half of the world’s population eats at least one organic food per day. This percentage is increasing and will reach 70%, 80% and 90% by 2020.

There are many reasons consumers choose organic products. Some like the taste, others prefer them because they believe organic produce is healthier, while some think organic farming is more environmentally friendly. But, non-organic products can be a good choice because there are ethical concerns over the treatment and welfare of farm workers.

While organic food is generally more expensive than traditional foods, prices do vary depending upon where you live. There are many factors that influence the cost of organic foods. The availability of suitable land for organic agriculture is one factor. Another factor is the price of inputs as well as labour for organic farming. Transport costs, marketing costs and taxes are also important. In Europe, for example, organic food prices are 10% more than regular food.

Below are the main differences between conventional and organic foods.

  • Organic livestock is fed a diet based on grasses and grains rather than corn and soybean meals.
