Today, organic foods are the fastest-growing industries. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, healthier for the environment, and easier to afford for consumers.
However, they are also more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.
These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. Between 2011-2012, nearly half of Americans shopped for organic foods.
The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. According to the Organic Trade Association OTA, organic food retail prices are about twice those of conventional products.
Organic food is growing faster that any other sector of the food industry. Looking closely at the data, you'll see that organic food consumption has grown steadily since 2009.
According to OTA the volume of organic products sold at supermarkets grew by 14% in 2010 and 2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
The younger generation is however leading the charge for organic food. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.
What are organic foods?
Organic produce can be grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. There is no use of growth hormones and no animal testing. These crops can be grown naturally by farmers, and they don't need to be treated with chemicals to control pests or weeds.
Organic farming practices preserve soil quality and help conserve water resources. In addition, organics are better for our health because they contain more nutrients than conventional food. Organic products have a higher fiber content and are lower in calories and fat than conventionally manufactured ones.
What are organic products good for skin?
Organic skincare products don't contain any synthetic chemicals such as parabens or phthalates.
Organic skincare products don't contain artificial colours or fragrances.
They are designed to promote healthy skin, prevent premature wrinkles, heal injuries after they happen, and support overall wellbeing.
Here are some common terms you might encounter when searching for organic products
- Paraben Free – These chemicals are used to preserve certain cosmetic products, but can cause serious health problems if taken in large amounts.
- Fragrance Free - The product is not scented with essential oils.
- Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
- Natural Ingredients – The ingredient is naturally derived either from a plant or an animal.
- Vegetarian/Vegetarian - All ingredients are vegan or vegetarian.
- Gluten-Free means that the formulation was free of gluten.
- Non-Toxic -- The product doesn’t contain toxic substances, carcinogens, harmful compounds, or any other dangerous chemicals that could pose a threat to your health.
- Biodegradable - the product will break down into harmless components when discarded.
- Pesticide-Free – No pesticides were used in the growing or harvesting of crops.
- GMO-Free means that no ingredient in the product contains genetically modified organisms.
- Certified Organic means that all the ingredients have been grown using methods that protect the soil and water as well as wildlife and farmers.
Is organic food better for us?
According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.
Research has also suggested that organic food may reduce mercury and lead exposure. One study revealed that children who ate organic meat had 33 per cent lower blood lead levels than their counterparts who didn't eat organic meats. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.
Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.
What are the benefits of organic fruits?
Organic food is free from pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and hormones. They also contain more nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, E, and K, plus omega-3 fatty acids. Organic food is healthier for the environment and our bodies.
Organic foods are made using sustainable agricultural practices, which protect soil quality and promote biodiversity. They are free of toxic chemicals, irradiation and sewage effluent.
Many organic products are not associated with produce. They include dairy and meat, poultry, eggs baked goods, pet food, household cleaning supplies, and personal care products.
According to the USDA, "organic" means that crops are raised in compliance with federal standards. These foods cannot be grown by farmers using conventional methods. However, they can use approved natural methods to control pests, like crop rotation and cover crops, or animal feed made of organic materials.
Additionally, the farmer must adhere to guidelines concerning the amount of fertilizer and pesticide that he uses during the growing seasons and how he rotates his fields among various crops. GMOs (genetically modified organisms), synthetic growth hormones and insecticides as well as synthetic fertilizers are prohibited by farmers.
Vegetables and fruits labeled as "100% organic" fulfill all of the requirements. Some farms don't label their products 100% organic, as it could confuse consumers. Instead, they will label their product as "made with organic ingredients. "

What happens to your Body When You Switch To Organic Products?
