Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between curried and curry?

There is no difference in spelling. Both words refer the same thing: Indian food that uses meats and vegetables along with different seasonings.

Curry comes from the Hindi word kari meaning "to rub." This term refers to how the spice mixture is rubbed onto the food. Curried foods are generally cooked until they become golden.

While curried dishes were once reserved only for special occasions they are now enjoyed regularly throughout India. They can include chicken, beef, lamb, fish, vegetables, and rice.

Plain white rice is commonly served with curried meals. The most common accompaniments are raita (a yogurt paste) and chutney.

What are the typical spices, condiments, and seasonings used in their dishes in Thailand?

Thai cuisine is an amalgamation of influences from across Asia. Its roots lie in India and China, along with Southeast Asia.

Freshness is the main ingredient in Thai cuisine. Ingredients that are quickly cooked and picked at the right time will have more flavour. This is why meat, fish and vegetables, as well fruits, vegetables, herbs, seeds, and nuts are often eaten raw, then heated.

Spices and sauces give dishes depth and color. Fresh basil, cilantro, mint, coriander (cilantro), lemongrass, ginger, turmeric, garlic, chillies, chilli paste, soy sauce, tamarind juice, oyster sauce, palm sugar, coconut milk, lime leaves, galangal root, curry powder, shrimp paste, fish sauce, tamarind water, rice vinegar, etc. These ingredients are common.

What are the main Flavours of Thai Cooking?

Thai cuisine includes several distinct regional cuisines. These include Northern, Central, Southern, Eastern, Western, and Northeastern Thai food. Each region has its own unique flavour profile.

Thai food contains many flavors.

Thais value sweetness as it makes the food more enjoyable. Thai cuisine is rich in sweet ingredients like coconut milk and palm sugar (gula melanka).

Thailand's most popular food is sourness. Hot dishes are often served with sour foods. This combination helps balance out the heat.

Thai food is not complete without spicy food. Thai recipes often include spices such as galangal and ginger root.

What are the best Thai spices?

Galangal (lemongrass), coriander, turmeric and cinnamon are the best Thai spice. Other good spices include clove, cardamom and black peppercorn as well as cloves, star anise and cloves.

Rose petals and bay leaves, pandan leafs, curry leaves, pandan leave, kaffir lemon leaves, vanilla beans. Tamarind pods, lemongrass, basil, mint are other useful spices.

Which Thai spice do I need to cook Thai food at home?

For authentic Thai cooking at home, you need to be familiar with five essential spices: cayenne, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper. Each of these ingredients has its distinct flavour profile and plays a vital role in creating delicious dishes.

Cinnamon provides sweetness while black pepper enhances the flavours. Curry powder is given its characteristic yellow colour by turmeric and coriander seed. Cayenne peppers provide heat and cilantro provides freshness. Finally, cinnamon adds depth and complexity to any dish.

Each of these spices can be found at your local grocery, but you may prefer to buy them online.

What are the seven Indian spices?

Indian spices are a group of spices used in Indian food. They are usually made up of cardamoms, cumins, corianders, turmeric and fenugreek. They enhance flavour and aroma of dishes by blending with natural ingredients like meats and vegetables. Combining spices creates unique flavour profiles that make Indian food so special.

Cardamom has a pungent, sweet taste with hints o citrus and ginger. It is used to flavour curries, rice dishes such biryani, and other Asian cuisines. Cumin has a earthy aroma and a rich, bitter flavour. It is commonly added to curries and meat dishes, as well as dals. Coriander's sweet, citrus aroma adds a subtle sweetness to dishes. It is used often to season vegetables and lentils.

Turmeric has an earthy flavour with mustard, spices, and pepper hints. This spice is often used in curries, and other dishes. It also has a golden hue. Fenugreek has a rich aroma, earthy tones, and a slightly bitter flavour. It is commonly used to season meat dishes, such as kebabs and curry. Ginger is spicy and pungent, with hints citrus. It is a perfect addition to curries, soups, and chutneys. Asafoetida (hing) has a pungent smell and strong flavor that substitutes onion and garlic in some recipes.

These spices are a unique combination that creates Indian cuisine.

What is the difference between cooking Whole and Ground Spices? Ground Spices?

There is no difference in cooking with whole spices and cooked with ground spices. All spices are ground after harvesting. The quality is the same.

The price difference is however significant. Whole spices can be more expensive due to the labor involved in their processing. The flavor is well worth the effort.

Buy whole spices and you'll often receive additional discounts. An example: If you buy an entire bag full of cinnamon sticks, you might get a discount.

The same is true for nutmeg cloves ginger, cardamom, and ginger. You might be able to save money by buying these spices in bulk.

Ground spices don't last as long as whole spices. Ground spices lose their potency very quickly due to oxidation.

But the main reason why we recommend purchasing whole spices is that they add a lot of character to recipes.

You can make a delicious curry by using whole turmeric in place of ground turmeric. You can also use whole coriander to create a spice combination for chicken dishes.

Grinding spices takes time. If you're buying whole spices it makes sense for you to buy large quantities. So that you don’t run out of spices, it’s a smart move.

How To

How to Make a Garlic Pressure?

A garlic press is a valuable tool in every home cook's kitchen. You can quickly mince garlic or make a paste. It can also be used to crush whole garlic cloves into buttery spreads or garlic salt.

If you don't yet have a garlic presse, you may be wondering where to get one. Luckily, we've got some tips to help you get started.

First, you will need a large bowl. Then, place the bowl under the press and add the crushed garlic. Set the pressure regulator valve at the maximum setting.

Next, turn your handle clockwise to hear a click. The top part of the press should lift off and reveal a flat surface that will allow you to slide the blade back and forth over the bowl. Keep turning the handle clockwise until you reach the end of the blades.

Finally, take the pressed garlic out and enjoy!

Here are some more ways to use this versatile instrument:

  • Garlic mince can be added to soups or sauces, salads or dips.
  • To crush whole garlic cloves, use the press to create a buttery spread
  • Make pizza dough by crushing whole cloves.
  • Mix roasted garlic in mashed potatoes or creamy pasta.
  • Make pesto with garlic mashed in the press
  • Blend the garlic into a smooth vinegar dressing
