What Organic Foods Are You Looking For?
Organic foods are those that come from plants or animals, and do not contain any chemical pesticides, fertilizers, or additives. They can't be genetically modified or exposed to ionizing radiation. The food must contain no artificial ingredients, colourings, flavour enhancers, or preservatives. It should not contain genetically modified animals (GMOs).
When Justus von Liebig, a chemical chemist, coined "organic", which means "life-giving," to describe the properties in manure, the term "organic" was used for the first time. Most people associate organic production with food. Organic refers to products that only contain naturally occurring substances, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals, which are all found in nature.
The consumption of organic foods has risen dramatically in the past decades. According to recent statistics, about 50% of the global population consumes at-least one organic product every day. This number increases constantly and is expected to reach 70%, 80%, and 90% by 2020.
There are many reasons that organic products are chosen by consumers. Some prefer the flavor, while others prefer them because they are healthier. Others also believe organic farming makes it more sustainable. Some consumers choose non-organic products because of ethical concerns about farm workers' and animal treatment.
Organic foods are more expensive than those made from conventional food, though prices may vary by country and region. There are many factors that influence the cost of organic foods. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. The cost of inputs and labor required for organic cultivation is another factor. Transportation costs, marketing expenses, and taxes are all factors. In Europe, for instance, the average price for organic food in Europe is 10% higher than its regular price.
The main differences between organic and conventional foods are summarized below.
- Organic produce is completely free from chemicals, hormones and antibiotics.
- Organic livestock is fed grasses and grains, rather than corn and soya meal.
- Organic milk comes only from cows who are fed hay and pasture grasses all-naturally.
- All organic raw materials are certified organic.
- Organic fruits or vegetables should not be grown in pesticide- or other harmful chemical environments.
- Organic meat, poultry, and seafood do not undergo radiation.
- It is important to soak any raw nuts and seeds prior to use.
- Organic cooking uses only healthy oils.
- Organic eggs are laid outdoors by hens.
- Bees use traditional methods to extract organic honey.
- Organic chocolate is made with beans and sugar grown organically.
- Organic wines are made without chemical additives.
