Frequently Asked Questions
What is organic food?
Organic produce can be grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. No growth hormones are used. Animal testing is also not done. These crops are allowed to grow naturally, so farmers do not use chemicals to prevent weeds or pests.
Organic farming methods also help to preserve soil quality, reduce erosion, and conserve water resources. Organics contain more nutrients than regular food and are therefore better for our overall health. Organic products are more nutritious than conventionally grown foods and have lower calories and fiber.
What is inorganic food?
Organic food is grown without pesticides and artificial fertilizers. These chemicals can be harmful for your health.
Organic food is organically grown without the use of harmful chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides. These chemicals can be dangerous for both humans and animals.
Inorganic food includes meat, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, honey, grains, vegetables, fruits, spices, and herbs.
Organic refers to how an agricultural product was grown. Organic farming employs natural methods and soil amendments for growing crops. Conventional agriculture uses pesticides or fertilizers.
Foods labeled as organic must meet strict guidelines by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). All organic food must comply with the National Organic Program Standards. This means that it must not contain prohibited materials like antibiotics, growth hormones or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as well as industrial solvents. Organic food must not contain toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers or sewage sludges.
What is an Organic Food Producer?
Organic food producers grow organic products without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. These foods include fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy products.
Organic food production occurs on farms that have their crops grown naturally. This includes soil preparation and pest control as well as crop rotation.
Organic products must meet certain criteria established by USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) before they can be considered organic.
These guidelines make it possible for consumers to have safe, healthy, and delicious food.
Organic foods have higher nutritional content and better flavor, as well as lower pesticide residues.
USDA organic products must carry the USDA Certified Organic seal.
This certification means that the product meets the standards laid down by the National Organic Program.
Organic food not only makes us healthier but also helps to protect the environment.
Organic farming methods preserve natural resources, such as water or land. Organic farming techniques also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions which contributes to climate change.
Organic agriculture uses fewer chemical inputs and pollutes less.
Because of this, harmful gases such as ammonia and even nitrates will not build up in the air.
There are many types and varieties of organic farming.
Conventional farming refers to the use of synthetic inputs such as pesticides and fertilizers.
Regenerative farming uses compost, cover crops, green manures, and other methods to improve the soil's health. It also promotes biodiversity.
Agroecology focuses on sustainable relationships between people, plants, and animals.
Permaculture promotes self sufficiency through the creation of systems that imitate nature.
Which organic products are most in demand?
Today, organic food is the fastest growing industry. Even though we have come a long ways from our roots there is still plenty of room for growth.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
They are also generally more expensive. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.
The results show that organic food is becoming increasingly popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
The USDA reports that organic production increased 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.
While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), average retail prices for organic food are almost double those of conventional alternatives.
However, organic food is growing more quickly than any other part of the food market. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.
Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.
Are organic meats better?
If you have been paying attention for long enough, you will probably know the answer. This is the crux of it: organic food has been growing in popularity while conventional food has fallen out of favor.
Organic foods continue rising in popularity because they are healthier. In addition to being safer for our health, organic products also help the environment by reducing pollution and waste.
There are many sides to this coin. Organic produce is more difficult to grow and takes more resources. Organic food can be more expensive than its nonorganic counterpart.
Organic meats tend to be more expensive than those raised conventionally. There are however ways to lower these costs without sacrificing the quality of organic meats.
Locally grown produce is a great way to save money. Buy locally grown vegetables and fruits to help keep prices low. Farmers receive incentives to grow healthier crops.
A great way to save money is to search for deals. Organics often come with discounts.
Finally, another way to save money is by eating less meat. Because of the amount of feed required to raise livestock, meat production can become expensive.
There are many reasons organic foods are better for our bodies and the environment, but we need to be mindful of the cost.
Statistics
- As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
- Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
- According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
- When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)

How To
What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?
Organic products can be grown without synthetic fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. They are free-range and come from clean water sources. The term "organic", which means they don't contain additives or chemicals, refers to their non-containing any. This product was made from natural materials and is free of harmful substances.
Natural refers to the way food was grown. It's used to describe foods that have not been altered into their final form (e.g. fruits). Natural foods are usually fresher than processed foods, as they haven’t been exposed to heat, radiation, chemical preservatives, or other treatments. But, not everyone believes that natural foods are healthy. Experts agree that organic and conventional foods are very similar. Both types of food have been tested for safety and quality. Organic produce is less likely to contain pesticide residues and pollutants than conventionally grown produce.
Most grocery stores offer organic options. If you are looking for organic meat, poultry and eggs, check with your local grocery store. Some companies sell only organic products; others have separate sections for them. You should look for USDA Certified Organic, Non GMO Project Verified (Biodynamic Association Certified), Rainforest Alliance Certified, and other certifications.
These products should not be consumed if you are pregnant. Unborn babies and infants can be exposed to pesticides.
