Are organic foods better for us?

According to the Environmental Working Group's recent report on pesticide residues within foods, organic fruits & vegetables contained nearly half of the pesticides that non-organic varieties. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. Another study concluded traditional fish should not be consumed by pregnant women, due to high mercury levels.

Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.


Are organic foods healthy?

There are two types. One is those that we grow ourselves, and the other is those that we buy from someone else. Although there are exceptions to each category, most of the answers to your question are yes. Organic food is healthier because it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, preservatives, or genetically modified organisms (GMO).

In supermarkets all over North America, Europe Asia, Latin America, Latin America, and Africa, you can find organic food. Organic food is now available in most grocery stores, making it easier to find organic foods.

Organic food tastes better and is more nutritious, as it has higher levels of vitamins and minerals. Organics are also grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers, so they don't pollute our soils and water supplies.

The USDA regulates organic farming practices. They require farmers to follow strict guidelines so that organic produce can be eaten safely. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.

Organic food is often less expensive than conventional food. Customers pay less for the same amount in calories, protein and nutrients. Organic farms can charge less for their crop because they aren’t required to buy expensive chemical inputs.

According to Environmental Working Group, organic food can be 10 percent cheaper per pound when compared to conventionally produced food. You can make a change to organic food if your family is concerned about their health.

Organic food has become a popular alternative to standard American diets. It is often believed that organic food is exclusive to specialty markets and gourmet restaurants. You can easily purchase organic food in regular grocery stores throughout the United States.

In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. The US market value of organic foods was $43Billion in 2012, up from $21B in 2007.


Why should I choose organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.

Here are some tips from the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

Buy organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

USDA organic labels for meat, poultry eggs, milk and cheese as well butter and honey are recommended.

Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."

Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient doesn't appear on the list, it could be added to the product during processing.

Fresh meats are better than canned or frozen. Many frozen and canned foods contain less nutrients, like high fructose Corn Syrup.

5 Reasons to Buy Organic Products

Organic foods are organically grown without the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. They are free from genetically modified organisms and irradiated substances. Their production processes do not include sewage or industrial solvents. During its growth, the food's natural environment remains unaffected by contamination. It is free from artificial additives and preservatives. It does not contain hormones or antibiotics. They are also produced in conditions that preserve their nutritional value and freshness over longer periods.

  1. Health benefits. Nonorganic produce has more chemicals than organic. Organic produce is healthier. It's therefore less likely that it will cause allergies and other sensitivities. This means you're also consuming less toxic and carcinogens.
  2. Eco-friendliness. Produce grown without synthetic fertilizer and pesticides requires very little water. Organic farms are typically located far away form areas of high pollution and where conventional growth is difficult because it requires so much effort. That helps reduce air pollution.
  3. Sustainability. Organic farming relies on soil fertility rather than chemical fertilizers; this results in healthier soils with higher levels of organic matter. Rotating crops and allowing the soil to rest between harvests improves soil health. Strong immune systems are developed when farm animals only eat grasses and grains that have not been treated with hormones or antibiotics.
  4. Taste. The taste of conventional fruits and veggies is often bland. This is because they are picked at the peak of ripeness. They then get shipped long distances to their destination. Organic produce tastes richer and sweeter because it was harvested while still unripe.
  5. Nutrition. Many conventional processed foods contain harmful substances like BPA and GMOs. Stick to whole foods, including meat, eggs fish, nuts seeds, beans and fruit.
