Frequently Asked Questions
Why is organic food important
Our health is dependent on organic produce. It's the best method to ensure you eat healthy foods. It's not only better for us but also it's more sustainable as it doesn't rely upon pesticides and fertilers.
Organic farming uses natural methods for growing crops without using harmful chemicals. This makes organic farming safer for both humans and animals. When you choose organic food, both you and the earth are protected.
However, organic food is good for our health. We are all well aware of how harmful processed food can make our bodies feel. You might not know this, but organic fruits and vegetables don't have to be treated with chemicals. They taste fresher, look better and last longer.
That's why eating organic matters so much. It's healthy for you and the planet.
What are the most loved organic products?
Today organic food is the fastest-growing sector. However, we still have a lot to learn from our roots.
Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
However, they are also more expensive. The Organic Food Index was created to address this. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.
The USDA reported that organic production rose by 10% in the last year. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.
Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.
That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.
According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. And young adults under 35 years old account for 25% of all organic food purchases.
Why should I choose organic?
The health risks of conventional agriculture include asthma, allergies and diabetes. It is important to make informed choices about food purchases.
The Environmental Working Group offers these tips:
Always buy organic fruits & vegetables.
USDA organic labels are required for meat, poultry, eggs and milk.
Avoid processed foods labeled as "natural" or "no additives."
Check ingredient lists carefully. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.
Choose fresh meats over frozen or canned ones. Foods that are frozen or canned often have less nutritionally-rich ingredients, such as high fructosecorn syrup.
What are the things to look for when purchasing organic products?
USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This guarantees that the product meets certain USDA standards. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. They eat the whole animal. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'
Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens eat both animals and plants. A digestive tract that is omnivorous includes a crop, proventriculus and gizzard. It also contains small intestines, large intestines, and anus.
Buy dairy products that are 100% organically produced. Like ruminants and dairy cows, they have four stomach compartments. The fourth stomach, or the udder is where you get milk.
Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. For example, pork may be labelled '95% organic.' This means 95 percent of the pig's feed came from organic sources.

- According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
- Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
- When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)

What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?
Organic products do not contain synthetic fertilizers or hormones. They come from clean water sources, and are raised on free-range animals. They are organic because they don't contain any additives or chemicals. This product was created by nature, and therefore does not contain harmful substances.
The term "natural" refers to how food is grown. It's usually used to describe foods not processed into their final form (such as fruits). Natural foods are more fresh than other foods because they have not been subject to heat, radiation or chemical preservatives. However, some people believe natural doesn't necessarily mean healthy. Experts aren't sure if there is much to be different between organic and traditional foods. Both types are tested for safety as well as quality. Organic produce contains fewer pesticide and other pollutants than conventionally-grown produce.
In general, most grocery stores now offer organic options. For organic meats, poultry, eggs and seafood, you should check with your local supermarket. Some companies only sell organic products. Others have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified are some of the options.
These foods should be avoided by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Pesticides can harm unborn infants and babies.
