Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.
But they tend to be more expensive. We created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to see which foods are most in demand today and how these trends are changing.
The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.
According to the USDA, organic production increased by 10% last year alone. Currently, organic food accounts for 9% in the U.S. agricultural production.
Organic food is growing in popularity but is still expensive. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.
That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. You can see that organic food has been steadily increasing since 2009.
According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.
This is because consumers are looking for healthier foods. Organic food sales have been increasing in all age groups.
Younger generations are choosing organic food more often than older generations. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. Young adults aged below 35 account for 25%.
Why is organic food important
It is essential for our health to eat organic produce. Organic produce is the best way to eat healthy foods. It's healthier for us as well as more environmentally-friendly because it doesn’t rely on pesticides, fertilizers, or other chemicals.
Organic farming relies on natural methods to cultivate crops, without the use of harmful chemicals. This means fewer environmental pollutants, making it safer for humans and animals. When you choose organic food, both you and the earth are protected.
The benefits of organic food go beyond our health, though. We all know how unhealthy processed foods can make us feel. Organic fruits and vegetables aren’t subject to chemicals spray. They taste fresher, look better and last longer.
Because of this, organic foods are so important. It's healthy for you and the planet.
What is an inorganic food?
Organic food is produced without the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals could cause health problems for those who eat inorganic food.
Organic food can be grown without chemical fertilizers, pesticides herbicides, fungicides, and other harmful substances. These chemicals may cause damage to animals as well as humans.
Inorganic foods are meats, fishes, eggs, buttermilk, cheese, yogurt and honey as well as vegetables, fruits and spices.
Organic refers specifically to the method an agricultural product has been grown. Organic farming employs natural methods and soil amendments for growing crops. Conventional agriculture uses pesticides or fertilizers.
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), must ensure that organic food meets strict standards. According to the National Organic Program Standards all organic food must be free of banned materials such as antibiotics growth hormones genetically modified organisms GMOs, and industrial solvents. Organic food must be grown without the use of toxic chemicals or petroleum-based fertilizers.
Are organic foods better for us?
The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.
Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. A study concluded that children who ate organic meat had 33% lower levels of blood lead than those who didn’t. Another study concluded conventional fish consumption should be stopped by pregnant women because it contains high levels of mercury.
Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend that fresh produce and vegetables be used whenever possible to reduce your chances of developing cancer.

What happens when you switch from conventional products to organic?
Organic products can be grown without synthetic fertilizers, hormones or antibiotics. They come only from natural sources of water and free-range animals. The term "organic", which means they don't contain additives or chemicals, refers to their non-containing any. This product was made from natural materials and is free of harmful substances.
Natural refers to the way food was grown. It's used to describe foods that have not been altered into their final form (e.g. fruits). Natural foods are usually fresher than processed foods, as they haven’t been exposed to heat, radiation, chemical preservatives, or other treatments. But, not everyone believes that natural foods are healthy. Experts aren't sure if there is much to be different between organic and traditional foods. Both types of food have been tested for safety and quality. But organic produce has fewer pollutants and pesticide residues than conventionally grown produce.
Most grocery stores now sell organic products. Organic meat, poultry or eggs can be found at most local markets. Some companies offer only organic products while others have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic is a non-GMO Project Verified company.
