Frequently Asked Questions

What are organic fruits?

Organic foods are free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are also richer in nutrients like vitamins C, E, K, and omega-3 fat acids. These healthy ingredients make organic food better for our bodies and the planet.

Organic foods are grown using sustainable farming practices that preserve soil quality and encourage biological diversity. They are produced without harmful chemicals, irradiation, or sewage sludge.

Many organic products are not associated with produce. They include dairy and meat, poultry, eggs baked goods, pet food, household cleaning supplies, and personal care products.

The USDA defines organic as crops that are grown according to federal standards. To grow these foods, farmers cannot use non-organic (or conventional) methods. However, they may use approved natural pest control methods, such as crop rotation and cover cropping, and animal feed made from organic materials.

In addition, the farmer must follow guidelines regarding how much fertilizer and pesticide he uses during the growing season and rotate his fields between various crops. GMOs (genetically modified organisms), synthetic growth hormones and insecticides as well as synthetic fertilizers are prohibited by farmers.

Vegetables and fruits labeled as "100% organic" fulfill all of the requirements. But some farms do not label their products as 100% organic because it would confuse consumers. Instead, they will say that their product is "made with organic components". "

What is inorganic food?

Organic food is produced without the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides. These chemicals may be harmful to your health and can also be found in non-organic foods.

Organic food is organically grown without the use of harmful chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides. These chemicals can harm humans and animals.

Inorganic foods are meats, fishes, eggs, buttermilk, cheese, yogurt and honey as well as vegetables, fruits and spices.

Organic refers the way an agricultural product grows. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), must ensure that organic food meets strict standards. According to the National Organic Program Standards, all certified organic food must be free from prohibited materials such as antibiotics, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and industrial solvents. Additionally, organic food must be raised without toxic chemicals, petroleum-based fertilizers, sewage sludges, or ionizing radiation.

Organic foods are better for us.

The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. They discovered that organic apples contained eight more pesticides per gram than non-organic ones, while organic strawberries contained four times as many pesticides.

Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. A study concluded that children who ate organic meat had 33% lower levels of blood lead than those who didn’t. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.

Organic food appears to be more safe than non-organic. However, to reduce your risk of cancer and other diseases, experts recommend choosing fresh fruit and vegetables whenever possible.

What is organic meat exactly?

Organic meat refers to real food grown without the use artificial fertilizers, pesticides, or hormones. This also means that animals weren't given any genetically modified feed. The meat is safe to consume because it contains no harmful chemicals.

Organic meats are also healthier for the environment. The pollution levels in our environment are reduced when we eat organic foods. Organic farmers generally don't use toxic chemicals that kill birds and insects. We help to protect wildlife.

It is best to buy organic meats locally as much as possible. Local buying helps to keep money in the community, rather than moving out of state. Local businesses often offer discounts to their customers by shopping locally. Shopping locally keeps American jobs in America, rather than sending them abroad.

Statistics

  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • To provide the highest quality products and services to every customer, with a dedicated workforce that puts the customer first and takes the extra step to achieve 100% customer satisfaction and loyalty. (hollinsorganic.com)
  • Once certified by the USDA, it can fall into one of four categories: "100 percent organic", "organic," "made with organic ingredients," or "made with less than 70 percent organic ingredients. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods are produced without the use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are grown under natural conditions without artificial inputs such as fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, or genetic engineering. Crop rotation, cover crops and the use of compost animal manure, wastewater recycling, and integrated pest management (IPM) are some examples of organic farming.

In 2002, USDA National Organic Programs (NOP) were established to regulate the production and handling of organic products that are sold in the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Furthermore, the NOP rules require organic products to be free of banned substances such as pesticides residues and growth hormones.

In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. These services are offered by several certifying agencies, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers and Quality Assurance International. Each of these organizations provides third-party verification to verify that farms are following strict guidelines in regards to environmental stewardship, labour practices and care for livestock.

The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Spending on direct purchases of organic produce increased by 29 percent, while spending on meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, and seafood grew by only 1 percent.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports' 2015 survey found that 88% of respondents would spend more on organic food if it had higher nutritional values. Health Affairs also published a study showing that organic foods are less likely for people to get heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or obesity.

There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of 11 studies published in 2012 reached similar conclusions.

According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. The group also noted that the incidence of human illnesses due to E. coli O157 declined among children and adults after 2006, when the USDA started requiring more stringent organic standards for animals raised for consumption.
