Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. We've come far from our roots but there is still room for improvement.

Organic products are the future. They are safer, better for our environment, and more affordable for consumers.

But they tend to be more expensive. This is why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.

These findings show that organic foods are becoming more popular. Between 2011 & 2012, almost half of Americans purchased organic food.

According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. Organic food now accounts for 9% of U.S. agricultural output.

While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.

That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.

In fact, according to OTA, the volume of organic products sold in supermarkets grew by 14% between 2010 and 2011.

This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.

However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.


What are the top organic vegetables?

Organic farming is also beneficial for the environment. For example, organic farming uses composting techniques to re-use nutrients in the soil. This reduces pollutants and conserves precious resources.

Organic farming is good for the environment and increases crop yields. This is due to the fact that organic farming uses much less water during growth season.

Organic production methods also mean that farmers receive higher prices for their produce. People who are more conscious of the dangers of chemical fertilizers and pesticides will eat healthier food.

Are organic foods better?

According to the Environmental Working Group's latest report on pesticide residues in foods, organic fruits and vegetables had nearly half the level of pesticides compared with non-organic versions. The Environmental Working Group found that organic apples contained eight-times less pesticides than other non-organic fruits, and organic strawberries had fourfold more than their conventional counterparts.

Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. For instance, one study showed that children who consumed organic meat had 33% less blood lead levels than children who did not. Another study concluded that pregnant mothers should avoid eating conventional fish because of the high levels mercury.

Organic food seems to be safer than the non-organic. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

Organic food must also be free from toxic chemicals, petroleum based fertilizers, sewage effluents and ionizing radiation.

Organic food: Are they healthier and better for you?

Organic foods are grown without the use chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown under natural conditions, without artificial inputs like pesticides, herbicides hormones, antibiotics, genetic engineering, and fungicides. Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.

In 2002, USDA National Organic Program was established. It regulates the handling, processing, labelling and sale of organic products within the United States. NOP regulations assure that organic agricultural products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, organic products must not contain prohibited substances like pesticide residues or genetically modified organisms.

Two types of certification programs are available in the United States for producers who wish to have their products labeled organic. One is for farmers and ranchers; one is for manufacturers. Both programs require audits of operations each year to ensure that they are meeting strict standards. These services are offered by several certifying agencies, including CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers and Quality Assurance International. These organizations offer third-party verification that farms adhere to strict guidelines about environmental stewardship and labour practices.

The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. It was a 23 percent rise in retail spending for certified organic products since 2009. Sales at grocery stores were up 12 percent during this period. Direct purchases of organic produce saw a 29 percent increase in spending, while seafood, meat, poultry and eggs experienced a 1 percent growth.

Organic food is more expensive, but consumers believe its quality is worth the extra cost. Consumer Reports found that 88 per cent of respondents would be willing to pay more for organic food if the nutritional value was higher. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Although organic foods are not proven to prevent or treat certain diseases, some research suggests that they could improve overall health and reduce exposure to pesticides. In 2010, a review that included 31 studies concluded that organically-raised beef had lower levels of parasites and toxic chemicals than conventionally reared beef. Similar conclusions were reached in a separate analysis of 11 other studies published in 2012.

The Environmental Working Group released a report in 2014 that analyzed data from USDA's Agricultural Marketing Resource Center. They found that there was a decrease in foodborne illness due to E.coli, salmonella, listeria moncytogenes or campylobacter. The report also pointed out that E.coli 157 caused human illness declined in both children and adults following 2006 when USDA established stricter organic standards.
