Frequently Asked Questions

What are some of the benefits of organic agriculture?

Organic farming allows farmers to produce food using only natural methods. Farmers do not need to worry about harmful pesticides harming their crops or animals.

Organic farming also permits for the use of natural fertilizers. These fertilizers help to grow healthy plants and help to reduce the amount of chemical waste produced.

Organic farming can also be environmentally friendly. For example, organic farming uses composting techniques to re-use nutrients in the soil. This helps to reduce pollution and conserve valuable resources.

Organic farming improves crop yields while also helping the environment. This is because there is much less water used during the growing season.

Organic production methods result in farmers receiving higher prices. Consumers who are more aware about the dangers associated with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and other chemicals will choose healthier foods.

This raises the demand to produce organic food products. Organic farming is becoming more popular because of this.

What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This certifies that the product has met certain standards set by USDA. You will find the USDA Organic seal on all boxes, cartons and cans.

When shopping for meat ensure it comes only from cows that are fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants, which means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle have four stomach areas: rumen (reticulum), omasum (omasum), and abomasum. All parts of an animal must be organically fed if the cow is going to be labelled '100% organic.'

When buying chicken, make sure it comes only from chickens fed 100% organic feed and never given antibiotics. Chickens can eat both animal and plant food. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive system that includes a crop (proventriculus), gizzard and small intestine.

When buying dairy products, ensure they come from cows fed 100% organically grown feed. Just like ruminants, dairy cows also have four stomachs. Milk comes from the fourth stomach compartment--the udder.

You should always check the label before purchasing any other livestock. This will let you know what percentage of the diet was given to the animals. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.

What are organic fruits?

Organic food is free from pesticides, synthetic fertilizers and hormones. They are also richer in nutrients like vitamins C, E, K, and omega-3 fat acids. These ingredients are good for our bodies as well as the planet.

Organic foods are made using sustainable agricultural practices, which protect soil quality and promote biodiversity. They are made without the use of harmful chemicals, irradiation or sewage waste.

While most consumers associate organics with produce, many organic products include dairy, meat, poultry, eggs, baked goods, personal care items, pet food, and household cleaning supplies.

According to the USDA, "organic" means that crops are raised in compliance with federal standards. To grow these foods, farmers cannot use non-organic (or conventional) methods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.

The farmer must also follow the guidelines for how much fertilizer and insecticide he uses throughout the growing season. He must also rotate his fields among different crops. Farmers cannot use genetically modified organisms (GMOs), artificial growth hormones, synthetic insecticides, or synthetic fertilizers.

The requirements for organic fruits and vegetables are met if they are labeled 100 percent organic. But some farms do not label their products as 100% organic because it would confuse consumers. Instead, they will call their product "made using organic ingredients." "

Statistics

  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • As for organic meat, regulations require that animals be raised in living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviours (like the ability to graze on pasture), fed 100% organic feed and forage, and not administered antibiotics or hormones. (usda.gov)
  • Nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids were up to 50 percent higher in organic meats and milk than in conventionally raised products.[3] (en.wikipedia.org)
