How can you tell organic food from non-organic?

Fresh ingredients are essential for any chef. We feel better when our food is good.

This holds true for our food. We can identify exactly where and how organic foods were grown when we purchase them. It was not treated with harmful chemicals.

Organic food is produced without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. Organic farmers aren't allowed to use these substances.

Organic farming doesn't have to be difficult. There are many ways to safely grow organic crops.

Sometimes, organic farming is called sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.

Organic farming techniques include crop rotation and cover cropping. These techniques help prevent soil erosion and improve water quality.

They reduce the amount of chemical runoff that can enter waterways. Many of us live in urban areas so we have access to local farms that produce organic produce.

Two types of organic product certification programs exist. The USDA National Organic Program certifies one, while independent certifying agencies certification the other. Both require strict conformity to organic standards.

USDA seals, or O Seals, may be attached to certified organic products. These symbols indicate that the product meets federal requirements.


Is organic food better for us?

The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. Organic strawberries contained four times more pesticides that their conventional counterparts, and organic apples contained eight percent less.

Other studies suggest that eating organic food reduces exposure to toxic metals like lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.

Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

Organic Foods: What You Need to Know

Organic foods are made from animals and plants without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. They can't be genetically modified or exposed to ionizing radiation. The food must contain no artificial ingredients, colourings, flavour enhancers, or preservatives. It must not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The term "organic" was first used in 1845 when chemist Justus von Liebig coined the word "organisch" meaning life-giving, to describe the properties of manure. Most people associate organic production with food. In this context, organic means that the product contains only naturally occurring substances such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and minerals that occur in nature.

In the past decades, the consumption of organic products has grown dramatically worldwide. Recent statistics show that around half of the world's population consumes at most one organic product per day. This percentage continues to rise and is projected to increase by 70%, 80%, or 90% by 2020.

There are many reasons consumers choose organic products. Some consumers prefer organic products for the taste. Other people prefer them because organic produce is more nutritious. Still others believe organic farming is better for the environment. But, non-organic products can be a good choice because there are ethical concerns over the treatment and welfare of farm workers.

While organic food is generally more expensive than traditional foods, prices do vary depending upon where you live. There are many factors that influence the cost of organic foods. One factor is the availability land suitable for organic agricultural. The cost of inputs and labor required for organic cultivation is another factor. Transportation costs, marketing expenses, and taxes are all factors. The average European price for organic food is 10% lower than the regular price.

Below is a summary of the major differences between organic food and conventional food.
