They also tend to have higher prices. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to find out which foods are most popular with shoppers today, and whether these trends are changing.
These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. Between 2011 and 2012, the number of Americans who shop for organic food increased by almost 50%.
According to USDA, organic production grew by 10% last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.
Organic food is certainly on the rise but consumers are still not able to afford it. The average retail price for organic food is almost twice that of conventional foods, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA).
The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This increase reflects consumer demand for healthier foods, which explains why organic food sales are increasing across all age groups.
Younger generations are also leading the way in organic food choices. Millennials have twice the likelihood of buying organic food as baby boomers. 25 percent of organic food purchases are made by young adults younger than 35.
What is organic food?
Organic food is made without pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Inorganic foods contain these chemicals, which may cause health problems.
Organic food is grown naturally without harmful substances such as chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides. These chemicals can be dangerous for both humans and animals.
Inorganic food includes meat, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, honey, grains, vegetables, fruits, spices, and herbs.
The term organic refers to the way an agricultural product is grown. Organic farming is based on natural methods, soil amendments, and crop growth. Conventional farming uses pesticides, fertilizers, and chemicals.
Organic foods must comply with strict guidelines set forth by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to the National Organic Program Standards, all certified organic food must be free from prohibited materials such as antibiotics, growth hormones, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and industrial solvents.
