I love how spices bring flavour to food. But how can you make them live when they're used in drinks.
Spices are great because they bring out the best in any beverage. Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to your favorite beverage, such as coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
However, most recipes call for ground spice so you will need fresh whole spices. This makes sense, but it is expensive, takes time, and requires storage space.
Here is where the magic happens. With a little creativity, you can make your favorite spices easy to use in powdered form. These spices can be mixed into favorite beverages to create tasty spiced drinks.
There are two possible ways to create these powders. One method involves grinding whole spices into fine powder. Another uses a mortar and pestle to grind the spices into a finer consistency.
Whichever method you choose, you'll find that the resulting powder is much easier to measure out and store than whole spices. Powder also keeps well so you won't run dry.
You can experiment with mixing spices to create different flavours. Peppermint and spearmint can be combined to make minty water. For spicy ginger tea, use ginger and cardamom capsules.

When choosing spices, there are three things you should consider: the flavour profile, shelf-life, and cost. There are many flavour profiles that can be used depending on how you cook meat, poultry, fish and vegetables as well as beans, grains, pastas, eggs, bread, cakes, and other foods. Once you have decided on a category you will need to narrow your options based on the differences.
The shelf life of spices can also vary. Some spices last forever, while others expire quickly. Cayenne pepper has a long shelf life, while oregano is only good for two months. Price is another important factor. Spices are available in a range of prices, from $1 per tablespoon to more expensive than $100 per an ounce. This means that you will need to strike a balance between quality and value.
