The USDA defines "organic" as that crops being raised according to strict rules set forth by federal government standards. To grow these foods, farmers cannot use non-organic (or conventional) methods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.

The farmer must also follow the guidelines for how much fertilizer and insecticide he uses throughout the growing season. He must also rotate his fields among different crops. GMOs, synthetic insecicides, artificial growth hormones or synthetic fertilizers can't be used by farmers.

Vegetables and fruits labeled as "100% organic" fulfill all of the requirements. But some farms do not label their products as 100% organic because it would confuse consumers. Instead, they will call their product "made using organic ingredients." "


What is organic food?

Organic food is not produced with pesticides or artificial fertilizers. These chemicals can cause health problems in organic foods.

Organic food is free from harmful substances like pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals can be harmful to both animals and people.

How can you tell if food is organic?

Organic Foods: What You Need to Know

In 1845, Justus von Liebig, a chemist, first coined the term "organic", meaning "life-giving", to describe the properties and characteristics of manure. Today, organic is synonymous with food production. Organic refers to products that only contain naturally occurring substances, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals, which are all found in nature.

Over the past decade, organic products have seen a dramatic increase in consumption. According to statistics, approximately 50% of the world’s population consumes at minimum one organic product each day. This figure is on the rise and it is predicted to grow to 70%, 88%, and 90% in 2020.

There are many reasons why consumers choose organic products. Organic produce can be preferred for its taste; others prefer them for being healthier. Some people believe organic farming to be more environmentally friendly. Non-organic products are often chosen because they do not pose ethical issues regarding the treatment of farm workers or animals.

Organic foods are usually more expensive than conventional ones, although prices vary depending on countries and regions. There are many factors that influence the cost of organic foods. The availability of suitable land for organic agriculture is one factor. Another factor is the cost of inputs, labour and materials required for organic agriculture. Other factors include transportation costs, marketing costs, and taxes. In Europe, for example, organic food prices are 10% more than regular food.
