Frequently Asked Questions

What Spices or Herbs Are Best for Potatoes

A potato makes a great side dish with almost any meat. If you've been cooking potatoes lately, you may already know there are more ways to serve them than simply mashed.

These versatile vegetables are delicious additions to any meal, from salads to casseroles to soups to pasta dishes. But did you know that numerous spices and herbs go well with potatoes?

These delicious recipes will spice up your next potato recipe.

Almond Flour vs. Almond Meal. What's The Difference?

Almond meal can be substituted for almond flour and is versatile enough to be used in baking, cooking and even making nut-free meals.

Almond flour could also contain gluten making it difficult for some people to digest. Gluten-free foods should be avoided if you have celiac Disease or any other digestive condition.

Almond flour may not be considered a "superfood", per se, but it contains healthy fats as well as fibre, protein and vitamin E.

The nutritional benefits of the almond meal include magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and vitamins A, B1 (thiamin), and C. In addition, it provides 25 percent of the daily value for folate, 20 percent for niacin, 15 percent for pantothenic acid, and 5 percent for riboflavin.

Because it's made from almonds, almond flour contains monounsaturated fatty acids, while almond oil contains polyunsaturated fatty acids. Both types reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase HDL ("good") cholesterol.

Almond flour also contains antioxidants like phenolics and flavonoids. These compounds are effective in preventing oxidative damages caused by free radicals.

A study published by the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry revealed that almond flour had an antioxidant activity equal to that of blueberries.

Almond flour is typically sold along with almond milk, which is fortified to add additional nutrients.

What are the 7 Indian spices?

Indian spices are a collection of spices used in Indian cuisine. They are usually made up of cardamoms, cumins, corianders, turmeric and fenugreek. This spice blends natural ingredients to create flavour and aroma. These spices combine to create distinctive flavour profiles which are the hallmark of Indian cooking.

Cardamom has a pungent, sweet taste with hints o citrus and ginger. It is often used to flavour curries and rice dishes like biryani. Cumin has a earthy aroma and a rich, bitter flavour. It's often used in curries, dals, and meat dishes. Coriander's sweet, citrus aroma adds a subtle sweetness to dishes. It is often used in seasoning vegetables and lentils.

Turmeric is a spice that has an earthy flavor. It can be mixed with mustard, spices and pepper hints. This spice is commonly used in curries and other dishes and has a golden hue. Fenugreek has a rich aroma, earthy tones, and a slightly bitter flavour. It is often used in seasoning meat dishes like kebabs, curries, and kebabs. Ginger is pungent and spicy with hints of citrus. It is a perfect addition to curries, soups, and chutneys. Asafoetida is a spice that has strong flavors and a pungent smell.

These spices produce unique flavors, which make Indian cooking distinctive.

What is the difference between curry and curried?

There is no difference in spelling. Both terms refer to the exact same thing: An Indian dish that combines meat and vegetables with different seasonings.

Curry comes from Hindi word kari that means "to rub". It refers how spice mixtures are applied to food. Curried foods are generally cooked until they become golden.

Curried dishes weren't always reserved for special occasions. Today, they can be enjoyed throughout India. These dishes can be chicken, beef (lamb), fish, or vegetables.

Plain white rice is commonly served with curried meals. Another common accompaniment is raita, a yogurt sauce, and chutney, a sweet relish.

How to Store Spices

Keep them in an airtight, dry container away from heat or light.

If you want to keep spices fresh for a long time, place them into a dark cupboard. This will help preserve the spices and prevent oxidation.

Store your spices in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. It is possible for the spice to lose its flavor and aroma if it's placed in close proximity to a window or heater.

Spices can be best kept in an airtight container or tin. Avoid storing spices in plastic containers.

After opening the seal, make sure to inspect it again. Humidity can cause spoilage.

Don't toss out any leftover spices. Don't throw them away, instead use them in new recipes. For an extended shelf life, you can freeze the vegetables.

What are the best Thai spices to use?

Galangal, coriander and turmeric are the best Thai spices. Cayenne pepper and clove are also good spices.

Rose petals, bay, pandan leaves (curry leaves), curry leaves; pandan leaves; kaffir lime leaf leaves; vanilla beans; tamarind pods; lemon grass, basil, and mine are some other valuable spices.

Statistics

  • According to the McCormick Science Institute, indigenous Indian spices were cultivated as early as the 8th century BC in the gardens of Babylon. (spicecravings.com)
  • According to a recent survey, professional chefs and many home cooks use spices; usage has only continued to grow from 2011 to now. (hospitalityinsights.ehl.edu)
  • India contributes to 75% of global spice production. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

How to store spices for cooking?

Here's how to store your cooking spices for maximum performance. First, let's understand how foods are stored.

Because spices lose their flavour when exposed to the sun, they are best kept out of reach from light. This is caused by oxidation, which happens when oxygen and organic compounds combine like spices.

To avoid oxidation, spice should be kept in dark cupboards. Spices lose their flavor quickly if these conditions don't exist.

You can preserve the flavor of spices by keeping them in sealed jars, away from direct sunlight.

You can add herbs and spices to water to make a flavoured drink. For example, you could mix 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon in 1/2 cup of warm milk and stir it well. Add a squeeze of lemon juice and serve immediately.

Dry herbs and spices can also be used in soups, stews or casseroles. Just sprinkle the spice mix evenly over the dish. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before you serve.

You can add leftover cooked vegetables, fruits, meats and shellfish to your favorite recipes as snacks.

To get the best flavours from fresh herbs and spices, cut them or tear them and add them to hot foods. You can also freeze herbs and spices by placing them in ice cube trays or muffin cups and freezing them. Once frozen, transfer them to freezer bags and zip-top plastic bag.
