Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between organic and inorganic foods?

Organic food is made without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Organic farming practices contribute to soil health, water purity, and animal welfare.

Inorganic foods are produced using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and sewage effluent. Radiation can be used to destroy food, while genetically modified organisms are created by biological engineering.

The term "natural" is often used interchangeably with "organic." Natural does not necessarily have to mean organic. Natural products can also be labeled with synthetic ingredients.

Organic produce is more nutritious than traditional produce due to the fact that it contains less harmful chemicals and pesticides. Organic farmers also don't use synthetic fertilizers or hormones, pesticides, or antibiotics.

Why should I choose organic?

Conventional agriculture has been linked with many health problems including asthma, allergies. Healthy choices must be made when purchasing food.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), offers these tips to help you choose "cleaner" foods:

As much as possible, purchase organic fruits or vegetables

USDA organic labels can be found on meat, poultry (eggs, eggs), milk, cheese and yogurt as well.

Avoid processed foods that are labeled "natural" or "no added ingredients."

Be sure to read all ingredient labels. If an ingredient isn’t listed, it might be added during processing.

It is better to eat fresh meats than canned or frozen. Cans and frozen foods are often less nutritious than fresh meats, such as high fructose corn syrup.

What are organic foods and how do they compare?

Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, irradiation, genetic engineering, or confinement feeding. No growth hormones are used, and there is no animal testing. These crops are allowed to grow naturally, so farmers do not use chemicals to prevent weeds or pests.

Organic farming methods also help to preserve soil quality, reduce erosion, and conserve water resources. Organics are also better for your health as they contain more nutrients that conventional food. Organic products tend to be higher in fiber and lower fat than conventionally produced foods.

Organic foods are better for us.

According to the Environmental Working Group’s latest report on pesticide residues, organic fruits/vegetables had nearly half as many pesticides than non-organic. They found that organic apples contained eight times fewer pesticides than non-organic apples, while organic strawberries were four times cleaner than their conventional counterparts.

Studies have also shown that organic foods reduce the risk of mercury and lead poisoning. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.

Overall, organic food does seem to be safer than its non-organic counterpart. Experts recommend eating fresh fruits and veggies whenever possible to reduce the chance of developing cancer.

Statistics

  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • Cosmetic brands such as Laurel and Rose Mira are 100 percent organic and have a wide array of skincare products. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

Is there anything negative about buying organic products?

Organic food offers many benefits. However, there are also some drawbacks. These include higher consumer prices, lower quality standards, and fewer choices.

It is okay to want more variety when shopping for groceries. We're conditioned to expect low-quality foods that taste bad. This is why most grocery stores stock identical prepackaged products.

Organic food is becoming more popular today because it provides better nutrition and great tasting food. So how do you convince people it's worth paying a little extra?

You could also tell them organic food is more expensive. But that doesn't explain why organic food tastes better. It could even make them suspicious of you motives.

It is better to emphasize its positive aspects. Organic food is more nutritious, has fewer pesticides, and uses fewer antibiotics. Organic food is free from synthetic fertilizers and herbicides which makes it healthier for us as well as our environment.

Organic food is often avoided by people who think it's too expensive. If they take into account the health benefits, however, they might decide that spending a few extra dollars per week is worthwhile.

Organic food tastes better because it is produced according to strict guidelines. Organic food retains more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Organic food is also tastier because it's picked later in the season. This makes the food more fresh and easier to digest.

Organic food is usually cheaper than conventional food because it is grown organically by farmers, which means that they use less fertilizer and labour.
