Frequently Asked Questions
What are the most popular organic products?
Organic food is the fastest-growing industry today. However, we still have a lot to learn from our roots.
Organic products will be the future. Organic products are safer, more sustainable, and cheaper for consumers.
But they also tend to be higher priced. That's why we created the Organic Food Index. We wanted to determine which foods are the most popular among shoppers today and whether these trends are changing.
The results of the study show that organic food has become more popular. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.
According to the USDA, organic production increased by 10% last year alone. Organic food now makes up 9% U.S. agriculture output.
While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. The Organic Trade Association (OTA) reports that organic food retail prices average almost double the price of conventional foods.
That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.
According to OTA, organic products sold in supermarkets grew 14% between 2010-2011.
This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice more likely to purchase organic food than baby boomers. Young adults below 35 years of age account for 25%.
What are some things I should look out for when purchasing organic goods?
USDA-certified organic label are desirable. This guarantee that the product has met specific standards set forth by USDA. Look out for the USDA Organic seal on boxes, cartons cans and jars.
When you shop for meat, ensure that it comes from cows who are fed organic feed. Ruminants are cattle that chew their cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. Organic feeding must be done on all organs of the animal in order to get the cow labelled organic 100 percent.
Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Omnivore chickens can eat both plants as well as animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.
You should ensure you only buy dairy products made from milk that has been produced by cows who have been fed 100% organically grown food. Dairy cows have four stomach compartments, just like ruminants. The fourth stomach compartment--the cow's udder--is where milk is produced.
Check the label when purchasing livestock of any other type to find out what percentage was used in the animal's diet. For example, pork may be marked "95% organic" to indicate that 95 percent of the pork's feed is organic.
What does it mean to be an organic food producer?
Organic food producers make products that are organically grown. These foods include fruits as well vegetables, grains and dairy products.
Organic food production happens on farms where crops have been naturally nurtured. This includes soil preparation and pest control as well as crop rotation.
USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), has strict requirements for agricultural products to be certified organic.
These guidelines help consumers access healthy, safe and nutritious foods.
Organic food has many benefits, including lower pesticide residues and higher levels of heavy metal contamination as well as better nutrition and flavor.
USDA certified organic products must bear the USDA Certified Organic label.
This certification means that the product meets standards established by the National Organic Program.
Organic food helps us eat healthier and also protects the environment.
Organic farming techniques preserve water and land. Organic farming also helps to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, which are responsible for climate change.
Organic agriculture uses fewer chemicals, and less pollution runoff.
This improves the air quality by reducing the likelihood of harmful gases like ammonia, nitrates and other pollutants building up in your atmosphere.
There are many types to organic farming.
Conventional farming involves the use artificial inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides.
Regenerative farming includes compost, cover crops, as well as green manures that improve soil health. It also encourages biodiversity.
Agroecology focuses on sustainable relationships between people, plants, and animals.
Permaculture encourages self sufficiency by designing systems that mirror nature.
What are organic products for beauty?
Organic Beauty Products are natural products without synthetic chemicals such as petroleum, parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates, and artificial preservatives. These ingredients are common in cosmetics such as shampoos, perfumes, and cosmetics.
Organic beauty products are also free from animal testing and do not contain any genetically modified organisms (GMO).
The USDA defines organic production as "a system of production which fosters the cycle of resources" and it has been used since decades to refer to foods grown without pesticides.
There has been a rise in demand for ecofriendly beauty products over the years due to the negative effects of chemical chemicals on our skin.
These include skin irritation, hormone imbalance, premature ageing, and cancer.
Organic beauty companies are committed to creating healthy and safe products for consumers while protecting the environment.
Is organic produce healthy?
There are two types of foods; those we grow ourselves and those we buy from someone else. There are exceptions to these categories, but most people will answer your question yes. Organic food is safer because it does not contain any harmful chemicals.
You can find organic food in supermarkets across North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Most grocery stores now carry organic food, making it easier for consumers to choose organic products.
Organic food is healthier and tastes better because it contains more vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients. Organics can be grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. This ensures that organics do not pollute our soil or water supply.
Organic farming is regulated by the USDA. Farmers must follow strict guidelines to ensure safe eating. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.
As an added benefit, organic food is often much cheaper than conventional food. Consumers are paying less for the same amount of calories, protein, and nutrients. Organic farms can charge less for their crop because they aren’t required to buy expensive chemical inputs.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), organic food actually costs 10% less per pound. Switching to organic food is a smart move if you care about your health and that of your family.
Organic food is becoming a popular option to the standard American diet. Organic food is not only available in gourmet restaurants and specialty markets, as many people may believe. Organic food can easily be found in any regular grocery store across the United States.
In recent years, organic food sales have been on the rise. The US market value of organic foods was $43Billion in 2012, up from $21B in 2007.

How To
What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?
Organic products are produced without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They come from clean water sources and free-range animals. The term "organic", which means they don't contain additives or chemicals, refers to their non-containing any. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.
The term "natural" refers how food is grown. It is used to describe food that has not been processed into its final form, such as fruits. Natural foods are more fresh than other foods because they have not been subject to heat, radiation or chemical preservatives. Some people don't believe that natural means healthy. Experts aren't sure if there is much to be different between organic and traditional foods. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. Organic produce has less pesticide residues and pollutant than conventionally grown food.
Most grocery stores now carry organic meats and poultry. Organic meat, poultry or eggs can be found at most local markets. Some companies offer only organic products while others have separate sections. Look for USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Biodynamic Association Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, etc.
If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Pesticides are known to affect unborn babies and infants.
