How can you tell whether food is organic?
Any chef will tell you fresh ingredients are more important than any other ingredient. Because we feel better when we eat well.
The same goes for our food. Organics are traceable back to the source and provenance of their products. We also know that it didn't have any harmful chemicals.
Organic foods are produced without using synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, or genetically modified organisms (GMO). These substances are not permitted to organic farmers.
Organic farming doesn't have to be difficult. There are many ways to safely grow organic crops.
Many people refer to organic agriculture as sustainable agriculture. Organic farming is more sustainable than traditional methods and provides all the nutrients necessary to sustain life.
Crop rotation, crop rotation, cover cropping and composting manure are all organic farming methods. These practices help to prevent soil erosion and improve water purity.
They also reduce chemical pollution of waterways. Many of us live in urban areas so we have access to local farms that produce organic produce.
There are two types for organic products certification. One is certified through the USDA National Organic Program and the other by independent certifying agents. Both require strict adherence of organic standards.
USDA seals, or O Seals, may be attached to certified organic products. These symbols indicate that the product meets federal requirements.
Are organic foods better for us?
The Environmental Working Group's most recent report on pesticide residues found in food shows that organic fruits and veggies had almost half the pesticide content of non-organic. Organic apples had eight times less pesticides than nonorganic apples. However, organic strawberries had four times the amount of pesticides as their conventional counterparts.
Another study suggests that organic food can reduce exposure to toxic metals such as lead and mercury. One study found that organic meats had 33 percent less lead in children than the levels of those who did not eat them. A second study found that conventional fish should be avoided by pregnant women due to the high levels of mercury.
Organic food tends to be healthier than nonorganic. Experts recommend that you choose fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible to lower your chance of developing cancer or other diseases.
What are organic fruits and vegetables?
Organic foods are free of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They contain more nutrients such vitamins A, C. E, and, in some cases, omega-3 oils. These nutritious ingredients make organic foods better for our bodies, and for the planet.
Organic foods are grown with sustainable agricultural practices that help to preserve soil quality, and increase biological diversity. They are free of toxic chemicals, irradiation and sewage effluent.
Most people associate organics with fruits, but organic products also include dairy, meat and poultry, as well as baked goods, personal care items, pet food and household cleaning supplies.
The USDA defines organic as crops grown in accordance with strict federal regulations. These foods cannot be grown by farmers using conventional methods. They may however use approved natural pest management methods like crop rotation or cover cropping as well as organic feeds.
The farmer must also follow the guidelines for how much fertilizer and insecticide he uses throughout the growing season. He must also rotate his fields among different crops. GMOs, artificial growth hormones, synthetic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers are not allowed in the fields of farmers.
All the above requirements are met by vegetables and fruits that are labeled "100% Organic". But some farms do not label their products as 100% organic because it would confuse consumers. Instead, they will say that their product is "made with organic components". "

What happens to your Body When You Switch To Organic Products?
Organic products are free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, and genetic manipulation. They are derived from clean water and animals that have been free to roam. They are organic because they don't contain any additives or chemicals. This product was produced by nature and therefore contains no harmful substances.
Natural refers to the way food was grown. It's used to describe foods that have not been altered into their final form (e.g. fruits). Natural foods are often fresher because they're not subject to heat radiation, chemical preservatives or any other treatment. Some people don't believe that natural means healthy. Many experts say there isn't much difference between conventional and organic foods. Both types can be tested for safety and quality. Organic produce has less pesticide residues and pollutant than conventionally grown food.
Most grocery stores now sell organic products. Check with your local market if you want organic meat, poultry, dairy, eggs, and seafood. Some companies sell only organic products. Other companies have separate sections. USDA Certified Organic is a non-GMO Project Verified company.
If you are pregnant, or nursing, these products should not be eaten. Pesticides have been shown to harm infants and unborn babies.
