Organic products are the future. They are safer and more cost-effective for consumers.
They are also generally more expensive. That is why we developed the Organic Food Index. We wanted the ability to identify which foods are currently most popular and whether these trends have changed.
These results indicate that organic food is growing in popularity. The number of Americans shopping for organic food grew by nearly 50% between 2011 and 2012.
According to USDA, organic food production increased by 10% only last year. 9% now comes from organic foods in the United States.
While organic food is certainly gaining ground, it seems that it is still an expensive choice for consumers. According to the Organic Trade Association, (OTA), organic food retail prices are nearly twice as expensive than conventional options.
That said, organic food is growing faster than any other segment of the food sector. If you look closely at the data, it will be apparent that organic food consumption has steadily increased since 2009.
According to OTA however, the volume in supermarkets of organic products grew by 14% from 2010 to 2011.
This is due to consumer demand for healthier food, which explains why organic foods sales are rising across all age groups.
However, the younger generation is leading the charge in choosing organic food. Millennials are twice as likely to buy organic food compared to baby boomers. The 25% of organic food purchase made by younger adults below 35 are made up of young adults.
How do I find out if my produce's organic?
These are the labels you should look for to ensure you are purchasing organic produce
USDA Organic Certified – This certification is issued by USDA to ensure that the product is 100% organic.
Certified Naturally Grown: Produce that has been grown in accordance with organic practices, but has yet to receive certification from USDA.
Pastured/Free range - These are animals that live outside and graze freely on grasses and herbs.
These labels indicate whether the product meets certain criteria.

5 Reasons to Buy Organic Products
Organic foods are grown without pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. They are free from genetically modified organisms and irradiated substances. They do not use industrial solvents or sewage effluent in their production. During its growth, the food's natural environment remains unaffected by contamination. It is free of preservatives as well as artificial additives. It does not contain hormones or antibiotics. They are also made in conditions that maintain their nutritional value and freshness for longer times.
- Health benefits. Nonorganic produce has more chemicals than organic. Organic produce is healthier. This makes it less likely to cause allergies or sensitivities. It also means that you consume less toxic chemicals and carcinogens.
- Eco-friendliness. Organic produce is low in water consumption. Organic farms are located far from cities where there is a lot of pollution, because they require so much energy to grow. This helps to reduce the amount of air pollution.
- Sustainability. Organic farming is based on soil fertility and not chemical fertilizers. This results in soils that are healthier and have higher levels of organic matter. The rotation of crops and the letting of land fallow can improve soil health. Farm animals develop strong immune systems when they eat only grasses/grains raised without adding hormones or antibiotics.
