Frequently Asked Questions

Is organic food healthier?

There are two types: foods that we grow and those that we purchase from others. Although there are exceptions to each category, most of the answers to your question are yes. Organic food is healthier as it doesn't contain any harmful chemicals or pesticides, herbicides and preservatives.

You can find organic foods in supermarkets across North America. Most grocery stores now carry organic food, making it easier for consumers to choose organic products.

Organic food tastes better and is more nutritious, as it has higher levels of vitamins and minerals. Organics are grown without using pesticides and fertilizers. They also don't pollute soil or water.

The USDA regulates organic agriculture practices. This means that farmers must adhere to strict guidelines to make sure organic produce is safe to consume. There are over 30,000,000 acres of US agricultural land that has been certified organic.

As an added benefit, organic food is often much cheaper than conventional food. Customers pay less for the same amount in calories, protein and nutrients. Organic farms don't have the expense of expensive chemical inputs, such as insecticides and/or fungicides. They can charge lower prices.

In fact, according to the Environmental Working Group, organic food costs 10 percent less per pound than conventionally produced food. Consider switching to organic foods if you are concerned about your health and the well-being of your family.

Organic food has been a popular alternative for standard American diets. While many believe organic food can only come from specialty markets and fine dining restaurants, it is not true. Organic food can easily be found in any regular grocery store across the United States.

In recent years organic food sales increased substantially. In the US, organic food sales reached $43Billion in 2012, an increase of $21Billion in 2007.

What should I be looking out for when shopping organic products

USDA-certified organic labels should be sought. This seal signifies that the product meets specific USDA standards. You will find the USDA Organic seal on all boxes, cartons and cans.

When shopping for meat, ensure it comes from cows fed 100% organic feed. Cattle are ruminants. This means they chew the cud. Ruminant cattle can be found with four stomach compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, omasum, abomasum and omasum. If the cow is to be labeled "100% organic", all of its parts must have been organically fed.

Buy chicken from only organic chickens that have been fed 100% organic food and are not given antibiotics. Chickens are omnivores, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Omnivorous chickens have a digestive tract composed of a crop, proventriculus, gizzard, small intestine, large intestine, and anus.

It is important to ensure that dairy products are from cows that were fed 100% organic feed. Just like ruminants have four stomachs, dairy cows have four. The fourth stomach compartment is the udder.

If you are buying other types of livestock, make sure to check the label to determine the percentage of their diet. Pork may be labeled "95% Organic" which means that 95 percent of its feed was organic.

What are the advantages of organic farming?

Organic farming gives farmers the opportunity to grow food without the use of chemical pesticides. The farmers don't have to worry about pesticides causing harm to their crops and animals.

Organic farming also offers more natural fertilizers. These fertilizers aid in the growth of healthy plants as well as reducing the amount chemical waste.

Organic farming is also eco-friendly. To recycle nutrients back into soil, farmers often resort to composting. This reduces pollution and conserves valuable resources.

Organic farming can increase crop yields and help the environment. This is because there is much less water used during the growing season.

Organic production methods mean farmers can get higher prices. Healthier foods are demanded by consumers who are more aware of the dangers posed by pesticides and chemical fertilisers.

This drives up the demand for organic products. Organic farming is growing in popularity.

What are organic products that can be used on the skin?

Organic skincare products don't contain any synthetic chemicals such as parabens or phthalates.

Organic skincare products are also free of artificial colours, fragrances, preservatives, emulsifiers, GMOs, petrochemicals, animal testing (except cosmetics tested on animals), pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, heavy metals, and other contaminants.

They also have the ability to support healthy skin, prevent premature ageing, promote healing after injuries and overall well-being.

These are some terms that you might see when looking for organic products

  • Paraben Free – These chemicals are used to preserve certain cosmetic products, but can cause serious health problems if taken in large amounts.
  • Fragrance-Free - the product does not have added fragrance or essential oils.
  • Cruelty-Free - No animals were harmed during the manufacturing process.
  • Natural Ingredients - The ingredient is derived naturally from the animal or plant.
  • Vegan/Vegetarian: The ingredients can be either vegetarian or vegan.
  • Gluten-Free - this means that gluten was removed from the formulation.
  • Non-Toxic: The product does not contain toxic substances, carcinogens or any other harmful compounds that could cause harm to your health.
  • Biodegradable means that the product can be thrown away as it will become harmless components.
  • Pesticide-Free: No pesticides used during growing or harvesting.
  • GMO-Free: This means that no product ingredient contains genetically engineered organisms.
  • Certified Organic refers to ingredients that were grown using methods that protect soil, water, air, wildlife and farmers.

What is an organic food producer?

Organic food producers produce organic foods that are free from pesticides and other chemical fertilizers. These foods include fruits and vegetables, grains, as well as dairy products.

Organic food production takes place on farms where crops are nurtured naturally. This includes soil preparation, pest control, and crop rotation.

For an agricultural product to be considered organic, it must meet strict criteria set out by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

These guidelines ensure that consumers can access safe, wholesome, nutritious food.

Organic foods have higher nutritional content and better flavor, as well as lower pesticide residues.

USDA certified organic products must bear the USDA Certified Organic label.

This certification means that the product meets the standards laid down by the National Organic Program.

Organic food is not only healthier for us, but also protects our environment.

Organic farming techniques help preserve natural resources such as water and land. Organic methods also reduce greenhouse gas emissions that can cause climate change.

Organic agriculture uses fewer chemicals, and less pollution runoff.

It also improves air quality because harmful gases like ammonia and nitrates are less likely to build up in the atmosphere.

There are many forms of organic farming.

Conventional farming refers to the use of synthetic inputs such as pesticides and fertilizers.

Regenerative agriculture uses cover crops and green manures to improve soil quality. It encourages biodiversity.

Agroecology is concerned with sustainable relationships between humans, plants, animals, and the environment.

Permaculture encourages self sufficiency by designing systems that mirror nature.

Statistics

  • Brands participating in this challenge are committed to using 100 percent sustainable cotton by 2025.[5] (en.wikipedia.org)
  • When packaged products indicate they are “made with organic [specific ingredient or food group],” they contain at least 70% organically produced ingredients. (usda.gov)
  • Popular clothing brands, like Patagonia, are labelled as organic by using 100 percent organic cotton for many of their styles. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • According to a study performed by consumerreports.org, organic products, compared to non-organic products, ranged anywhere from 13 percent cheaper to 303 percent more expensive. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

What happens to your body when you switch to organic products?

Organic products do not contain synthetic fertilizers or hormones. They are free-range and come from clean water sources. Organic means that they are free from chemicals and additives. This product was naturally produced and contains no harmful chemicals.

The term "natural", refers only to how food was grown. It is used to describe food that has not been processed into its final form, such as fruits. Natural foods are often fresher because they're not subject to heat radiation, chemical preservatives or any other treatment. Natural doesn't necessarily have to be healthy, however. Experts say that there aren't many differences between organic and conventional food. Both types are tested for safety as well as quality. Organic produce is safer than conventionally produced produce.

Most grocery stores now carry organic meats and poultry. Organic meat, poultry or eggs can be found at most local markets. Some companies sell only organic products; others have separate sections for them. Look for USDA Certified Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Biodynamic Association Certified, Rainforest Alliance Certified, etc.

These foods should be avoided by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. Pesticides can harm unborn infants and babies.
