How To
What You Should Know About Organic Foods
Organic foods are made from animals and plants without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. They can't be genetically modified or exposed to ionizing radiation. The food must not contain artificial flavours, colours, flavour enhancements, or preservatives. It should not contain genetically modified animals (GMOs).
The term "organic", as it is commonly known, was first used by Justus von Loig in 1845. He coined the phrase "organisch", which means life-giving, to describe manure's properties. The term organic is often associated with food production. Organic means the product has only natural substances like proteins, carbohydrates, and fats that are found in nature.
Globally, organic product consumption has increased significantly over the last decade. Recent statistics indicate that approximately half of the world’s population eats at least one organic food per day. This percentage is increasing and will reach 70%, 80% and 90% by 2020.
There are many reasons that organic products are chosen by consumers. Some like the taste, others prefer them because they believe organic produce is healthier, while some think organic farming is more environmentally friendly. There are ethical concerns regarding farm workers and animals. This is why some people choose organic products.
Organic foods are more expensive than those made from conventional food, though prices may vary by country and region. The price of organic food is affected by several factors. One is the availability and cost of land that can be used for organic agriculture. The cost of inputs and labor required for organic cultivation is another factor. Transport costs, marketing costs and taxes are also important. In Europe, for example, organic food prices are 10% more than regular food.
The main differences between organic and conventional foods are summarized below.
- Organic produce is naturally free of synthetic fertilizers and growth regulators as well as hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals.
- Organic livestock are fed grasses, grains and legumes rather than corn or soybean meals.
- Organic milk comes only from cows who are fed hay and pasture grasses all-naturally.
- All organic raw materials are certified organic.

- Organic meats, poultry, and seafood don't require radiation.
- Raw nuts and seeds are soaked before use.
