Frequently Asked Questions
What is Thai spice used for?
We've all heard the term "Thai spice" thrown around without knowing exactly what it means. We are left wondering why we don't eat more Thai spice when our mouths water.
It's much more than a spice. It's an ingredient that can add flavor and depth in dishes that otherwise would be bland.
There are thousands of Thai recipes, but very few include the authentic flavor. Let's learn how to include these delicious flavors in your meals.
As far back as ancient times, Thais have been cooking with herbs and spices to add flavor to food and beverages. Thai, which means "to make", comes from the Sanskrit word.
Today, Thais still love spicy food. This preference is often explained by the hot climate in Thailand that makes it difficult to stay warm while drinking hot drinks. Thais are also more likely to consume chili peppers as compared to Americans or Europeans.
Visit a local Asian grocery shop to find out more about Thai spices. There you will find a variety of ingredients such as dried chilies fresh basil leaves curry paste and ground black pepper.
Also, you may find whole peppercorns.
Thai cuisine uses both dry and wet spices. The dry spices are usually ground while the wet spices are crushed or pounded finely.
Dry spices can be added to any dish. Ground red pepper can be sprinkled on chicken soup, for example. To make a paste, wet spices are often mixed with butter or oil.
Wet spices can be used in sauces, dressings, and marinades. The most popular wet spices are fish sauce (oyster sauce), sesame oil, sesame paste, curry paste, and Hoisin sauce.
Thai recipes can be prepared at home by knowing which spices pair well with what ingredients.
Red pepper flakes are recommended for beef. If you're using seafood like shrimp, white pepper should be used.
You can also order online if your Asian market is not available. This market has everything you need, including dried chilies as well as exotic herbs and spices.
This Thai recipe will give you a kick next time your stomach gets rumbling.
What spices are used in Thai cooking?
Thai cuisine is well-known for its rich flavour profiles. These flavor combinations are made with unique and delicious spices that produce many delicious dishes.
Common ingredients used in Thai cooking include lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, chillies, garlic, shrimp paste, coriander, cumin, turmeric, and more.
Each of these spices is integral to Thai cuisine's unique flavour profile. In Thai cuisine, lemongrass is commonly used in soups and stews. Galangal provides a subtle peppery flavour to dishes. Kaffir lime leaves add a zesty, citrusy fragrance to dishes. Chillies give dishes a spicy kick. Shrimp paste enhances the umami flavor of dishes. Coriander gives off a light, yet fragrant aroma. Cumin adds to dishes a rich, smokey aroma. Turmeric gives dishes a vibrant, yellow hue.
These spices are combined to create complex flavour profiles specific to Thai cuisine. By using a combination of spices, chefs can create dishes that are both flavorful and aromatic. If you're looking to bring the flavours of Thailand into your kitchen, be sure to stock up on these spices!
What's the difference between cooking whole and with ground spices? Ground Spices?
There is no difference in cooking with whole spices and cooked with ground spices. After harvesting, all spices are ground. So there is no difference in quality.
However, this price differential is quite significant. Because of the labor involved in making whole spices, they cost more. However, the flavor is worth it.
When you buy bulk spices, you may get additional discounts. For example, you might receive a discount if you buy an entire bag of cinnamon sticks.
It is the same for cardamom and cloves as well as ginger, ginger, nutmeg, and ginger. You may be able save money if you buy these spices in bulk.
Ground spices last much longer than whole spices. Ground spices quickly lose their potency due to oxidation.
The main reason we recommend whole spices over dried is that they can add lots of flavor to recipes.
You can make delicious curry using whole turmeric, instead of ground turmeric. Or you can grind whole coriander seeds to create a spice blend for chicken dishes.
Grinding spices takes time. If you're buying whole spices it makes sense for you to buy large quantities. This will ensure that you don't run out of spices quickly.
Almond Flour vs. Almond Meal: What's the Difference?
An almond meal can be used as an alternative to almond flour. It can also be used in cooking and baking.
Almond flour may also contain gluten, making it difficult to digest. If you have celiac disease or another digestive disorder, it's essential to avoid gluten-free foods.
Almond flour isn't considered "superfood", but it is high in healthy fats, fibres, protein, vitamin E, and sodium.
The nutritional benefits of the almond meal include magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and vitamins A, B1 (thiamin), and C. In addition, it provides 25 percent of the daily value for folate, 20 percent for niacin, 15 percent for pantothenic acid, and 5 percent for riboflavin.
Almond flour is made with almonds. Almond oils contain polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. Both can lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol.
Almond flour is also rich in antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolics. These compounds are effective in preventing oxidative damages caused by free radicals.
In a study published in Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry, almond flour was found to have an antioxidant activity comparable to blueberries, cranberries or pomegranates and red wine grapes juice.
Almond flour can be purchased with almond milk that has been supplemented with nutrients.

How To
How to cut Shiitake Mushrooms
So, the shiitakes are growing well. There is nothing wrong with them. They are fine. But how can we make them cut without hurting ourselves? We've tried everything, even scissors. We keep losing them. What's the problem?
There's a trick to that. Put a rubber band around your mushroom stem and twist it tight. By doing this, you won’t slip and get cut.
You may think it sounds too easy. It is. But it's also very effective.
Because the rubber band makes the stem slippery it is easy to pick it up. It doesn't hurt to keep the stem in place.
Go ahead, try it. You'll be amazed how easy it is to cut mushrooms.
