Frequently Asked Questions

Which Spices and Herbs are Best Served with Potatoes?

A potato can be a side dish for any type of meat. You may have noticed that potatoes can be served in many different ways than mashed.

These versatile vegetables can be used in a variety of dishes including soups, casseroles, and pasta dishes. Many spices and herbs are good with potatoes, did you know?

Spice up your following potato recipe with these delicious recipes.

What's the difference between cooking whole and with ground spices? Ground Spices?

There are no differences between cooking with whole spices or ground spices. All spices can be ground once they have been harvested. There is no quality difference.

However, this price differential is quite significant. Whole spices cost more because of the labour involved in processing them. But the taste is worth it.

You'll often find extra discounts for bulk purchases when you buy whole spices. If you buy a whole bag of cinnamon sticks, you may get a discount.

The same is true for nutmeg cloves ginger, cardamom, and ginger. This can help you save money on spices if you buy them in bulk.

Ground spices don't last as long as whole spices. This is because ground spices lose their potency quickly due to oxidation.

But the main reason why we recommend purchasing whole spices is that they add a lot of character to recipes.

For instance, you can make a delicious curry with whole turmeric instead of ground turmeric. For chicken dishes, whole coriander seeds can be ground to make a spice blend.

Grinding spices takes time. It makes sense to purchase large quantities of whole spices when you are buying them. This will ensure that you don't run out of spices quickly.

Does Thai use ginger?

Yes. The traditional Thai cooking uses ginger heavily. Ginger is used extensively in Thai traditional cooking. It's often added to soups and stir-fries, and it's also common in desserts and drinks like lassis.

Ginger is native to China, Japan, and Korea, and its origins date back more than 5,000 years. It is believed that ginger originated in Southeast Asia where it was grown for medicinal purposes.

Ginger is known to stimulate digestion and relieve nausea. It may even help prevent migraines. Ginger also helps to relieve muscle spasms, reduce joint pain, and treat arthritis.

In Thailand, ginger is most often used fresh. It is then cut into thin strips and dried. You can buy ginger root in jars or cans from Asian markets.

What mint is used for Thai food?

Thai cuisine has the most widespread use of lime-leaf mint (Mentha certvina).

It has a mild, citrusy flavour that gives dishes a freshness and zing. Thai dishes can also be enhanced by adding other spices such galangal or coriander to their flavour.

Mint can be used as a sweet or savoury herb. Using the right spices, herbs, and aromatics is essential to achieving delicious authentic Thai flavours.

For extra flavor, make sure to add lime-leaf mint next time you prepare a Thai meal!

Happy cooking!

Almond Meal vs. Almond Flour: What's the Difference?

Almond meal can be substituted for almond flour and is versatile enough to be used in baking, cooking and even making nut-free meals.

Almond flour can also contain gluten which makes it more difficult to digest. If you have celiac disease or another digestive disorder, it's essential to avoid gluten-free foods.

Although almond flour isn’t considered to be a “superfood”, it is rich in healthy fats and fibre.

The almond meal offers many nutritional benefits including iron, magnesium, zinc, manganese (thiamin), calcium, vitamin A, B1 and Vitamin C.

Almond flour is made of almonds. Almond oil is made from polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, fatty oils. Both can lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol.

Almond flour is high in antioxidants including phenolics, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins. These compounds help to prevent oxidative damage from free radicals.

A study published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry found that almond flour had antioxidant activity equivalent to that of blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates, and red wine grape juice.

Almond flour is usually sold alongside almond milk, fortified with additional nutrients.

What spices are used for Thai cooking?

Thai cuisine is well known for its diverse flavour profiles. These flavor combinations are made with unique and delicious spices that produce many delicious dishes.

Common ingredients used in Thai cooking include lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, chillies, garlic, shrimp paste, coriander, cumin, turmeric, and more.

Each of these spices contributes to the distinctive flavour profile of Thai cuisine. You will often find lemongrass in soups, curries and stews. Galangal gives dishes a peppery flavor; chilies add a spicy kick to dishes. Shrimp paste adds umami depth to dishes. Coriander adds a mild yet fragrant aroma to dishes. Cumin adds a smokey flavour to dishes. Turmeric gives dishes a bright yellow hue.

Together, these spices combine to create complex flavour profiles unique to Thai cuisine. By using a combination of spices, chefs can create dishes that are both flavorful and aromatic. Stock up on these spices if you want to incorporate the Thai flavours into your cooking.

How to decide what spices to buy?

Cooking requires you to learn how to choose the right herbs for your recipes. There are hundreds of options, so where do you begin when deciding which ones to add to your pantry?

When choosing spices, there are three things you should consider: the flavour profile, shelf-life, and cost. You can choose to use different flavour profiles depending on whether your cooking involves meat, poultry or fish, vegetables and pasta. Once you've settled on a category, it's time to narrow down your choices.

The shelf life of spices can also vary. Some spices are good for a lifetime, while others can be lost quickly. For example, cayenne pepper lasts for years, whereas oregano loses its potency after two months. Then there's the price. The price of spices can vary from $1 per tablespoon to over $100 per ounce. This means that you will need to strike a balance between quality and value.

It's also important to determine if organic or nonorganic ingredients you prefer. Organic products are safer for the environment and contain less pesticides and chemicals than their conventional counterparts. But they can often be more expensive so make sure you weigh the benefits against their costs.

The best way to get the perfect spices for your home is to shop online. Online retailers provide comprehensive information on every product, including pricing, reviews and ratings.

Once you've narrowed your list, you can order directly from the retailer. You should store your items in airtight containers, away from heat and sunlight once you receive them.
