For now, love yourself and enjoy this one ...

Many Americans use the Cinco de mayo holiday as an excuse to go out and party, and to eat tacos and Nachos. Some, particularly the college crowd, use it as an excuse to drink margaritas, Dos Equis, and other alcoholic beverages.

Mexicanos, however, celebrate the day in a much more meaningful way. Of course, there is also the delicious food that's enjoyed to celebrate the day. Traditional foods are far more than the tacos you probably had at last year's celebrations. We'll get to that later.

Cinco de Mayo: More than Margaritas and Tapas

The holiday of Cinco de Mayo honors Mexico's surprise victory over France at the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862.

Benito Juarez was Mexico's then president in 1861. He suspended payments for foreign debts. This prompted Napoleon III to send troops into Mexico. This conflict led to the Battle of Puebla where Mexican forces won a temporary victory. After the battle, France took over Mexico and Maximilian I became the new emperor. The Mexican Republic did not regain control of their country until 1867, when they finally expelled and executed Maximilian.

Cinco de Mayo: Where and when is it Celebrated?

Cinco de mayo is a Mexican holiday that is celebrated every year. Mexican Americans who live north from the border of the United States are more likely to celebrate this holiday than anyone else.

The holiday is celebrated in Puebla as well, where it originated.

Cinco de Mayo: Is It Mexico's Independence Day?

No. No. Mexico celebrates its Independence Day on the 16th of September every year. In 1810, a Mexican priest named Miguel Hidalgo encouraged the Mexicans to rebel against Spanish colonial rule. This led to the War for Independence, which ended with Mexico's triumph in 1821.

Cinco de Mayo: How It Came To Be Celebrated In America

Jessica Lavariega Monforti is Vice Provost of California State University Channel Islands. She states that Cinco de Mayo celebrations have been held in California every year since 1863. In its first year, Mexican-American communities in California united to celebrate the anniversary of Battle of Puebla. They also used this occasion to recruit soldiers and raise money to support Juarez's ongoing battle against the French.

According to Dr. Lavariega Monforti the early Cinco de Mayo festivities were primarily focused on the fight for freedom and democracy against white supremacists in Mexico as well as in California during the Civil War. Latinos in California tended to support the Union during this period, rather than the Confederacy. Mexican-Americans celebrated Cinco de Mayo despite these challenges in the United States. Exiles from the dictator Porfirio Diz played a major role in this celebration.

Cinco de Mayo has evolved over time into a national festival that is celebrated by Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and other ethnic groups in the United States. This coincides with the Mexican American civil rights movement, which began in the 1940s. Many activists adopted Cinco de Mayo to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage and as a way of showing pride.

As time went on, however, it seemed that the message of pride in culture associated with Cinco de Mayo was fading away. According to Mr. Pilcher's account, Cinco de Mayo was a big hit in the United States between the 1970s-1980s, when brewing firms began using the holiday as a way to attract consumers and capitalize on the growing popularity of Mexican food.

Dr. Lavariega Monforti said, "By 1990, the public's perception of the holiday shifted. The focus is now on tequila and Mexican food ."

Cinco de Mayo: How It's Celebrated Today

In Mexico, the state of Puebla celebrates with parades, mariachis, colorful costumes and fireworks. However, May 5 does not fall under a federal holiday so stores, offices and banks remain open. The celebrations in the United States are more noticeable, especially in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago where events are dedicated to Puebla’s literature, dance and food. Mexican folkloric groups in New York City also use Cinco de Mayo as a way to promote the culture and history of Puebla. Dr. Lavariega Monforti believes that these efforts are a direct reaction to the commercialization and consumerism of Latino culture in the United States.

As is the custom, the U.S. Presidents will host a Cinco de Mayo celebration in the Rose Garden. Jill Biden and Biden are the hosts. Beatriz Gutierrez Müller, the First Lady of Mexico, will be attending this event.

Cinco de Mayo: Foods to Eat in Honor of the Holiday

As mentioned earlier, Americans use Cinco De Mayo to indulge in tacos and other Mexican food. However, there is not one particular dish that is associated with this holiday.

Pedro Reyes is a Mexican food journalist and the creative director of Paladar. He recommended mole Poblano for a Cinco de Mayo feast. It's a chocolate infused version that originates in Puebla. He recommended pairing this dish alongside chalupas - small fried tortillas stuffed with different fillings - white rice, nopales, fried beans and molotes, which are stuffed fried plantain patties. Beverages such as beer, tequila, and agua caliente, a fruity drink with flavors like horchata and tamarind, could be served to accompany the meal. A fermented alcohol drink called pulque is another option.

If you do not want to celebrate this beautiful, proudly cultural holiday, then that's fine. Keep your mashed potatoes and peas away from my guacamole.

Enjoy your holidays responsibly and don't drive drunk!

Cinco de Mayo: Margaritas and Guacamole

Every year on the fifth of May, I look forward to celebrating Cinco de Mayo. In honor of the holiday, I enjoy eating more authentic Mexican food. I usually eat tacos, but I also like to eat them often. Even a good chalupa is enhanced by a generous side of guacamole. I love guacamole.

Guacamole's origins date back to the Aztec Empire in the 16th Century. The Aztecs loved guacamole or ahuaca mulli (which translates to "avocado paste") and believed it was an aphrodisiac.

Guac is a popular dip around the world. There are 9 culturally different ways to enjoy this popular dip

The guacamole of today is not much different than the guacamole that the Aztecs enjoyed.

The avocado is the star of any bowl of guac. However, a few additional ingredients add important flavors to the mix. Cilantro, tomato, onion and lime juice are all key ingredients in guacamole. Add a little jalapeno if you enjoy spicy food.

Even those who have never cooked before can easily make guacamole. You still need to prepare all the ingredients. Slice, dice and mash everything together to create the perfect green bowl.

Spice Station Silver Lake's guacamole mixes are the best way to make your Cinco de Mayo celebrations more flavorful and easier. Last year I used their Mexican Guacamole Blend to make my famous guacamole. Now, as May approaches, my friends have already asked me to make it again this year.

Below you'll find a simple recipe and step-by-step instructions for making my Mexican guacamole. I hope you enjoy!

Guacamole recipe at home

Preparation Time: 5 Minutes

Chill Time : 1-hour

Serves: 4

Calories: 167 cal

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe avocados, pitted
  • 14 yellow onion, small diced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1-2 Roma tomatoes, diced small
  • 2 teaspoons of lime Juice
  • 2 tablespoons Mexican Guacamole Blend
  • A salty taste

Instructions:

  1. Remove the stone in the middle of the avocado by cutting it lengthwise. Using a large spoon, scoop out avocado meat into a mixing bowl.
  2. Use a potato masher or a Mashing Utensil to mash avocado until you reach the desired consistency. You can also use a fork if you don't have a Mashing Utensil.
  3. Combine the tomatoes, yellow onion and cilantro in a mixing bowl.
  4. Add the Mexican Guacamole Spice Blend and mix well.
  5. Add salt and lime juice to taste.

How to Keep your Guac green

At least one person has asked me every year how I keep my guacamole green. I have a few tricks that keep my guacamole green. Guacamole will turn brown when exposed to oxygen. The goal is to keep oxygen away from guac. To use the simplest method, simply place your dip in an airtight container. Pouring a thin layer of lime on top of your guacamole will also keep it green. This creates a barrier between air and dip. If you plan to use your limes, you can wrap them in plastic instead. Be sure to press the cellophane so that it is flush with the guacamole. This will help prevent air pockets.

You must consume your guacamole quickly, otherwise it will brown before you have a chance to throw away the pits.

Sweetness is essential for Thais because it makes the dishes palatable. Sweet ingredients such as palm sugar (gula melaka) and coconut milk play a significant role in Thai cuisine.

But it isn't just any old spice. It's an essential ingredient that adds flavor and depth to dishes that would otherwise be bland.

Thousands of recipes call for Thai spices, but few of them include the real deal. Let's talk about how to make sure you add these amazing flavors to your meals.

Thais have been using herbs and spices in their cooking since antiquity to add flavor to food. The name Thai originates from the Sanskrit word for "to cook."

Most Thais like spicy food, even today. This preference is often attributed to the hot weather in Thailand, which makes it difficult to keep warm without something hot to drink. Thais also consume more chili peppers that Americans or Europeans.

The best way to learn about Thai spices is to visit a local Asian grocery store. There you will find a variety of ingredients such as dried chilies fresh basil leaves curry paste and ground black pepper.

Also, you may find whole peppercorns.

Thai cuisine has two kinds of spices: wet and dry. Dry spices are usually ground, while wet ones are crushed or pounded finely.

These ingredients can also be used in almost any dish. These spices impart a distinct flavor to dishes such as curries (lentils), curries and chutneys. They also add a unique taste to rice, bread, and sweets.

The health benefits of spices can be found in their medicinal properties. For example, turmeric helps fight cancer cells. Cloves help protect against bad breath. Black pepper decreases cholesterol. Cinnamon lowers blood pressure. And ginger aids digestion.

A spice rack makes a great kitchen tool. It allows you to experiment with many different combinations of flavours. You can either make your own spice blends or purchase ready-made spices.

Some people prefer not to add any spices to their food. They believe spices mask natural flavors and do not improve them. However, adding a pinch of salt or pepper is no harm in enhancing the flavor of your meals.

Most chefs agree that spices are an essential part of cooking art. Without spices, many dishes are bland and tasteless. Try a new recipe next time you feel adventurous.

How To

How to decide what spices to buy?

To cook, you'll need to know how to choose the right herbs and spices for your recipes. There are many choices. So where do you start?

There are three main factors to consider when choosing spices: flavour profile, shelf life, and cost. You can choose to use different flavour profiles depending on whether your cooking involves meat, poultry or fish, vegetables and pasta. So once you've decided on a category, you'll need to narrow down your choices based on these differences.

Shelf lives vary greatly too. Some spices will last forever, others may expire very quickly. For example, cayenne pepper is good for years and oregano lasts only two months. Price is another important factor. Spices can cost anywhere from $1 per tablespoon up to $100 per ounce. This means that you will need to strike a balance between quality and value.

You'll also want to determine whether you prefer organic or non-organic ingredients. Organic products are safer for the environment and contain less pesticides and chemicals than their conventional counterparts. However, they often cost more, so you'll need to weigh those costs against the benefits.

Online shopping is the best option to find the right spices. Online retailers offer comprehensive information about every product, including price, reviews, ratings, and ingredients.

Once you've narrowed down the list, it's possible to order directly from the retailer. Once you have received your items safely store them in an airtight container, away from heat & light.
