Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference in cooking with whole vs. ground spices? Ground Spices?

There is no difference between cooking whole spices and with ground spices. After harvesting, spices are ground. The quality is the same.

However, this price differential is quite significant. Whole spices cost more because of the labour involved in processing them. However, the flavor is worth it.

Bulk purchases of whole spices can often get you additional discounts. A whole bag of cinnamon sticks might be eligible for a discount.

The same goes for nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cardamom, etc. If you purchase these spices in bulk, you may be able to save money.

Ground spices last much longer than whole spices. Ground spices quickly lose their potency due to oxidation.

Whole spices are a great way to add personality and flavor to your recipe.

For instance, you can make a delicious curry with whole turmeric instead of ground turmeric. You can also use whole coriander to create a spice combination for chicken dishes.

It takes time to grind spices. If you're buying whole spices it makes sense for you to buy large quantities. So you don't run short of spices.

What's the difference between curried and curry?

There is no difference in spelling. Both words mean the same thing: Indian cuisine that includes meat and vegetables mixed with different seasonings.

Curry is derived from the Hindi word kari, which means "to rub". This refers to the way the spice mixture is applied to the food. Curried foods are generally cooked until they become golden.

Curried dishes are no longer reserved for special occasions. They're now commonplace in India. You can choose from chicken, beef, lamb or fish as well as vegetables and rice.

Curried dishes are typically served alongside plain white rice. The most common accompaniments are raita (a yogurt paste) and chutney.

How do I make Thai food at home using Thai spices?

For authentic Thai cooking at home, you need to be familiar with five essential spices: cayenne, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper. Each ingredient has its own unique flavour profile, and each plays an important role in creating delicious dishes.

Black pepper adds savoury flavours, while cinnamon adds sweetness. Curry powder is given its characteristic yellow colour by turmeric and coriander seed. Cayenne peppers bring the heat while cilantro adds freshness. Finally, cinnamon can add depth and complexity in any dish.

You can buy each of these spices in your local grocery shop, or you can order them online.

What spices can be used in Thai cooking

Thai cuisine is well-known for its rich flavour profiles. These flavor combinations are made with unique and delicious spices that produce many delicious dishes.

Thai cooking uses many common ingredients, including galangal kaffir lime leaf, galangal kaffir lemon leaves, chillies, chillies, garlic, shrimp paste, cumin, turmeric, and many more.

Each of these spices contributes to the distinctive flavour profile of Thai cuisine. Lemongrass is often used in soups, curries, and stews; galangal adds a slight peppery note to dishes; kaffir lime leaves impart a citrusy aroma; chillies provide a spicy kick; garlic adds a sharp and pungent flavour to dishes; shrimp paste adds an umami depth to food; coriander has a mild, yet fragrant aroma; cumin brings a smoky note to dishes; and turmeric gives food a vibrant yellow hue.

These spices work together to create unique flavour profiles for Thai cuisine. Mixing spices together can make dishes both tasty and aromatic. These spices will help you bring Thailand's flavours to your kitchen.

How to Make A Garlic Press

A garlic press can be one of the most important tools in a home cook's toolbox. It can be used to quickly mince garlic into a paste. It is great for crushing whole garlic cloves in a buttery spread, or garlic salt.

If you don't yet have a garlic presse, you may be wondering where to get one. Luckily, we've got some tips to help you get started.

First of all, you'll need to get a large bowl. Place the bowl underneath the press and pour the crushed garlic into it. Now, turn the pressure regulator to maximum.

Next, move the handle clockwise so that you hear a click. The top end of the press should lift and reveal a flat area that allows you to slide your blade back and forth across the bowl. Keep turning the handle clockwise until you reach the end of the blades.

Finally, take out the pressed garlic.

Here are some more ways to use this versatile instrument:

  • Use minced garlic in soups, sauces and salads as a seasoning or even as a garnish.
  • Use the press to crush whole garlic cloves into a buttery spread
  • Place whole garlic cloves in a pizza dough and crush them before baking
  • Combine roasted garlic with mashed potatoes and creamy polenta
  • Use the press to make homemade pesto out of garlic
  • Puree garlic into a smooth vinaigrette
