Spices Used in Romanian Cuisine

Romanian cuisine is heavily influenced by Balkan and Ottoman cooking. This is reflected in dishes like stuffed peppers (ardei umpluti), cabbage rolls (sarmale), and kebabs.

Another classic, sarmale is made of pickled cabbage leaves wrapped around a filling of ground pork and rice. It’s a traditional holiday dish in Romania.

Thyme

Thyme is a key component of many recipes throughout Romania, particularly those that feature meat and seafood. Its Mediterranean origins make thyme a popular choice in recipes inspired by that region.

It can be used in a variety of dishes, but it’s often combined with other herbs to help it stand out. Sage and marjoram are good substitutes for thyme, as they have similar aromas.

It has a range of medicinal uses, including treatment for respiratory and digestive conditions. It can also prevent oral thrush and improve vision. It may even reduce stress levels.

Basil

Basil is an aromatic herb that is a member of the mint family. It carries a fresh, green aroma with a hint of sweet licorice.

In Romania, basil is used in a variety of dishes. It can be added to soups and stews and it is a popular seasoning for chicken, beef and pork.

Another dish that uses basil is a traditional Romanian vegetable stew called mancare de praz, which is made from leeks, olives and tomatoes. It is seasoned with lemon juice and garnished with chopped parsley or dill.

Rosemary

Rosemary is an aromatic herb that’s often used to flavor soups, casseroles, and stews. This perennial herb is a member of the laminaceae family and can be used fresh or dried.

In Romania, it’s used to add flavor and aroma to a variety of dishes. It’s especially popular with meat, chicken, and pork, but can be paired with other vegetables as well.

It can also be brewed to make rosemary tea, which may have positive effects on your health. It has been shown to improve eye health, especially in older people.

Oregano

Oregano is one of the most popular herbs in the world, and it’s a staple in Mediterranean cuisine. It’s used in a variety of dishes across the world, and it has a wide range of health benefits, from anti-inflammatory properties to antioxidants that help fight cancer.

It can be found in a wide range of recipes, from soups to stews and pasta sauces. It also pairs well with other spices, like garlic and onion, thyme, basil, parsley, and olive oil.

Garlic

Garlic is a vegetable that grows underground in the form of a bulb. It contains individual sections called cloves that are used for both culinary and medicinal purposes.

In Romanian cuisine, garlic is commonly used in a variety of dishes. Ostropel de pui, for instance, is a stew that includes chicken, spring onions, and garlic.

Black Pepper

Black pepper is one of the most commonly used spices in Romanian cuisine. It adds a touch of heat to dishes while also enhancing their flavor.

It is also a common ingredient in many other Balkan countries. It can be found in various forms of spreads called zacusca, which are a staple of many households throughout the region.

The berries of the pepper plant (Piper nigrum) are dried for use as a spice and seasoning. When fully ripe they form a dark red drupe with a single seed.

Chili Flakes

One of the most popular spices used in Romanian cuisine is chili flakes. These can be made by pounding dried chilies in a mortar and pestle or by grinding them in a blender on the pulse mode.

These are used in a variety of dishes throughout the country. They are particularly popular in sarmalute, which are cabbage rolls stuffed with ground pork and rice. Boiled in a special tomato sauce, these are delicious!

Dill

Dill is a popular herb that adds a punch of flavor to soups, sauces, and other dishes. It’s also known to have medicinal properties that can cure hiccups and calm nerves and muscles.

Fresh dill can be found in the produce section of most grocery stores. Dried dill weed is usually sold in the spice aisle.

In Romania, dill is used to make a variety of dishes. It’s commonly paired with fish, roasted potatoes, and yogurt-based sauces. It also goes well with tangy and sour salads.

Lovage

Lovage is a popular spice herb used to add flavour and color to dishes. It can be made into soups and stews or served as a vegetable.

The root of lovage is also used as a diuretic. It is an important ingredient in Romanian cuisine and can be found in a variety of dishes.

A traditional dish that is enjoyed by all generations of Romanians is mamaliga. It consists of a mix of diced potatoes, peas, pickles and plenty of meat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Almond Flour or Almond Meal? What is the difference?

An almond meal, which can be used as an almond flour substitute, is more versatile than other almond flours because it can be used for baking and cooking, as well as making nut free dishes.

Almond flour could also contain gluten making it difficult for some people to digest. It's important to avoid gluten-free diets if your condition is celiac.

Almond flour isn’t considered a superfood per se but it does contain healthy fats, fibre and protein and no cholesterol.

The almond meal offers many nutritional benefits including iron, magnesium, zinc, manganese (thiamin), calcium, vitamin A, B1 and Vitamin C.

Because it's made from almonds, almond flour contains monounsaturated fatty acids, while almond oil contains polyunsaturated fatty acids. Both types reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase HDL ("good") cholesterol.

Almond flour is high in antioxidants including phenolics, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins. These compounds are effective in preventing oxidative damages caused by free radicals.

An experiment published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry showed that almond flour has an equivalent antioxidant activity to that of blueberries.

Almond milk is often sold with almond flour, which has been fortified with additional nutrients.

How To

How to Cut Shiitake Mushrooms

The shiitakes are doing well. There is nothing wrong with them. How do we cut them? We have tried every method, including using scissors. But they just keep slipping from our hands. What's the matter?

Well, there's a trick for that. You must put a rubber band around the mushroom's stem and twist it tight. That way, you won't slip and cut yourself.

It may sound too simple. It is. But it's also very powerful.

The rubber band makes the stem slippery, so it feels natural when you pick it up. Plus, it doesn't hurt to hold the stem tightly.

Now, go ahead and try it. You will be amazed at the ease with which you can now cut mushrooms.
