If you want to know how to cook Czech dishes, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the traditional spices. These spices are used in breads, soups, and other dishes.
Pepper, for example, is a widely used spice in Czech cuisine. It's available whole (cely cerny pepr), crushed (drceny cerny pepr), or in powder form (mlety cerny pepr).
Pepper
Pepper (Piper nigrum) is one of the most commonly used spices in Czech cuisine. It is a staple in sausages, sauces and soups.
It is also a key ingredient in dishes such as goulash and smoked or hot paprika. Its aroma is most pronounced when freshly crushed.
Originally from tropical Asia, pepper is now grown in a variety of regions around the world, including the Caribbean and South America. Among the most widely used are black and white peppercorns.
The seeds of the pepper plant are available whole, or roasted, crushed or ground. They are also available as a dry powder or in liquid form.
Caraway
Caraway is a traditional spice used in Czech cuisine, especially rye bread and cabbage dishes. It has a peppery, anise-like flavor that works well in savory dishes.
It is often toasted for added flavor. It also has a mild licorice taste that can work well in sweet dishes.
Like all seeds, caraway is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, E, and K. It is rich in calcium and potassium, and it contains essential oils that may help reduce the risk of heart disease.
It is also used as a treatment for respiratory issues, such as bronchitis, obstructive asthma, and sinus infections. It can also help relieve heartburn, bloating, gas, and loss of appetite. It is also an effective anti-spasmodic agent for menstrual cramps and abdominal pain. It can also increase milk flow in nursing mothers.
Allspice
One of the most important traditional spices in Czech cuisine is allspice. Like a blend of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, allspice is a warm spice that brings a sweet-smoky flavor to many of the foods it’s paired with.
It’s also a common ingredient in desserts, particularly apple pie. Whole allspice berries are used to make mulled cider and wine; ground allspice is often found in pumpkin pie spice mixes.
Allspice is the dried unripe berry of a Pimenta dioica tree, native to Central America but now grown in a number of countries around the world. It’s harvested in late fall and sold both as whole or ground berries.
Juniper berries
Juniper berries, which are the female seed cones of certain species of juniper (Juniperus communis), are a traditional spice. They are a popular ingredient in European cuisine and give gin its distinctive flavour.
They’re also high in antioxidants and other plant compounds, which are important for promoting good health. They can help to prevent cancer, improve skin appearance, reduce inflammation, and more.
They’re also an effective diuretic, which means they help to flush excess fluids from the body. They may help to relieve bloating in some people, as well. However, they should not be used by pregnant women or those with decreased kidney function. They may also interact with other drugs, so it’s best to speak with your doctor before taking a juniper berry supplement.
Christmastime spices
For many Czechs, Christmastime is a time to gather together and share food with family. It’s also a time to celebrate the coming of the new year.
The Czech Republic shares its border with Germany, Poland, and Slovakia, bringing a number of traditional dishes and spices from these neighbors. But, as it sits at the center of Europe, it also has its own unique traditions and flavors.
One of the main dishes at a typical Czech Christmas dinner is fish soup, rybi polevka. It’s a hearty soup that features carp, various root vegetables, and different spices.
Another popular dish at Christmas is a roasted pig. You’ll see this dish on many menus in the country and it’s a delicious treat! It’s cooked for a long period of time and includes apple, pineapple, and spices to give it a sweet and succulent flavor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you put spice in a drink?
I love how spices add flavor to food. But how do you make spices liven up when they are added to drinks?
Spices are excellent because they add incredible depth to any beverage. Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to your favorite beverage, such as coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.
Most recipes call for ground spices. This means that you'll need fresh whole spice. Although this is logical, it can be costly, time-consuming, and takes up storage space.
Here is where the magic happens. With some creativity, your favourite spices can be made into powdered forms that are easy to use. Then you can mix them into your favourite beverages to create delicious spiced drinks.
Two ways can you make powders. A second method is to grind whole spices into fine powder. One method involves using a mortar-and-pestle to grind spices into a finer consistency.
It doesn't matter what method you choose, the result is easier to measure out than whole spices and easier to store. Powder keeps well, so you will never run out.
Mixing spices can be fun to create new flavors. For minty water you could mix spearmint with peppermint leaves. To make spicy ginger tea, you can also combine ginger and cardamom pods.
Once you've mastered making powdered spices, you can apply the same technique to herbs. Some popular herbs include basil, oregano, rosemary, thyme, and sage.
The possibilities are limitless. Powdered spices can be used to add flavour to beverages or enhance the flavor of dishes like soups, salads and pasta.
How to store your spices?
Keep them out of the sun and heat.
You can store them for long periods in a dark cupboard. This will preserve them and prevent any oxidation.
Keep your spices out of direct sunlight and in a cool dry place. You can lose the aroma and flavor of your spice if it is near a heater or window.
Spices work best in an airtight jar or tin. If storing in plastic containers, make sure there is no moisture inside the container.
Always check the seal after opening and resealing, as humidity can cause spoilage.
Do not throw away any spices that you have left over. Use them instead by adding them into other dishes. To prolong their shelf life you can freeze them.
What Spices or Herbs Go Best With Potatoes?
A potato is a great side dish for almost any meat. You may be familiar with the many ways you can serve potatoes other than mashed.
These versatile vegetables are delicious additions to any meal, from salads to casseroles to soups to pasta dishes. You may not know, but many spices and herbs can go well with potatoes.
Spice up your following potato recipe with these delicious recipes.
Is Thai cuisine made with garlic?
Thai cuisine uses garlic. Garlic is used in Thai cuisine as an ingredient in salads, soups and stir-fries.
Thai garlic is chopped and fried together with ginger, shallots and other spices. Also, you can eat it with sticky white rice.
Chilli paste, salt and lime juice are the most popular ways to eat garlic. This is known as "Nam Phrik", or namphrik. Nam Phrik is often served alongside grilled chicken, beef, or pork.
What is the difference between cooking with whole spices and using ground spices? Ground Spices?
There are no differences between cooking with whole spices or ground spices. All spices are ground after harvesting. So there is no difference in quality.
However, this price differential is quite significant. Whole spices are more expensive due to the labour required for processing them. The flavor is well worth the effort.
Buy whole spices and you'll often receive additional discounts. For example, you might receive a discount if you buy an entire bag of cinnamon sticks.
This is true for cloves, ginger and cardamom. This can help you save money on spices if you buy them in bulk.
Ground spices don't last as long as whole spices. Ground spices quickly lose their potency due to oxidation.
However, the main reason we recommend whole spices is because they add character to recipes.
Whole turmeric can be used to make delicious curry. To make a spice mixture for chicken dishes, you can grind whole coriander seed.
The process of grinding spices takes a lot of time. It is sensible to purchase large quantities when buying whole spices. That way, you won't run out of spices too fast.

Do You Know How To Make Curry Paste?
Curry paste contains dried chillies and shallots, galangal roots, lemongrass (kaffir lime leaf), garlic, shrimp paste, sugar and salt. It is used extensively in Thai cuisine.
Curry paste is one the most loved condiments in Southeast Asia. It gives many dishes a unique taste, including curries, soups stir-fries, stir-fries and salads.
It is very easy to make it at home. Follow our step-bystep guide below.
Step1 - Prepare Ingredients
- Before you start this recipe, make sure that all ingredients are prepared.
- Peel and chop shallots (about two cups). Next, chop galangal root into small pieces (3 inches in length) and place aside.
- Next, slice four garlic cloves. The lemongrass stems should be roughly 1/2 inch thick.
- After that, you will need to crush dried red chili peppers (about four tablespoons) before removing the seeds (optional).
- Next, slice the kaffir lime leaves in thin strips of about 5 inches. Take out the white part and place it in a bowl.
- Next, drain and wash the shrimp paste (6 ounces), and then coarsely mashing it.
- Finally, measure out sugar and salt.
Step2 - Grind Ingredients
- Blend all ingredients together until smooth.
- The texture should be very similar to peanut butter.
- Take note: If you are looking to reduce oil in your dish you can add water to the mix.
Step3 - Add Coconut Milk
- Add coconut milk to the mixture, and mix well.
- To prevent the coconut milk from becoming too sticky, slowly add it.
- You can reduce the amount of chillies and increase the quantity of galangal root if you prefer it less spicy.
- If you prefer it spicy, add more chillies or less galangal roots. The final product should be tasty to you.
Step4: Serve
- Top it with your favorite foods.
- Enjoy!
