Frequently Asked Questions
Is Thai cuisine made with garlic?
Thai cuisine uses garlic. Garlic is used in Thai cuisine as an ingredient in salads, soups and stir-fries.
In Thailand, garlic can be chopped and fried along with ginger and shallots. Also, you can eat it with sticky white rice.
Garlic is best chopped finely and mixed with oil, chilli paste, fish sauce, lime juice and oil. This is known as "Nam Phrik", or namphrik. Nam Phrik is often served alongside grilled chicken, beef, or pork.
What mint is used in Thai food?
The most common type of mint used in Thai cuisine is lime-leaf mint (Mentha Cervina).
It has a mild, citrusy flavour that gives dishes a freshness and zing. Thai dishes often include other spices such as galangal (lemongrass), garlic, and coriander.
Mint is versatile and can be used both in sweet and savoury recipes. For authentic Thai flavours, you must use the right spices and herbs.
Make a Thai dish next time and add some lime-leaf mint to give it extra flavor.
Happy cooking!
Can you spice up a drink?
I love the way spices add flavour to food. But how do you make them come alive when used in drinks?
Spices are excellent because they add incredible depth to any beverage. You can add a little cinnamon or nutmeg to any glass of wine, beer or coffee.
But most recipes call for ground spices, meaning you'll need fresh whole spices. This makes sense, but it is expensive, takes time, and requires storage space.
This is where magic happens. With your creativity, you can turn your favorite spices into easy-to-use powdered products. Mix them with your favorite drinks to make delicious spiced beverages.
These powders can be made in two ways. The first involves the grinding of whole spices to make fine powder. A mortar and pestle is another method to grind the spices to a finer consistency.
You'll find it easier to make powder than whole spices, regardless of the method. Plus, the powder keeps well so that you won't run out of stock.
You can even experiment with mixing different spices to create new flavours. To make minty water, you can combine spearmint and peppermint leaves. To make spicy ginger tea, you can also combine ginger and cardamom pods.
Once you are proficient in making powdered spice, you can also apply this technique to herbs. You can use basil, rosemary and thyme as common herbs.
The possibilities are endless. Use powdered spices to give your beverages extra flavour or to enhance the taste of dishes such as soups, salads, and pasta.
What is the importance of spices?
A spice can be described as a seasoning to enhance flavour in food. Spices can be powdered, liquids or oils. They are also called condiments and flavours.
Spice up your meals with a variety of spices. Many spices can be added for additional flavor and excitement.
Perhaps a little hot pepper sauce will enhance the flavor of your soup. A cup of cooked rice could be made more delicious by adding a few cayenne to the soup.
Fresh ingredients are best for experimenting with spicing. Look for organic dried herbs when you purchase them. Fresh herbs will last longer than dried.
Although some spices are essential to cooking, there are others that you might prefer not to use. If you have a history or liver disease, cinnamon sticks can be dangerous. Ginger also contains some coumarin but it is less concentrated. It is safe for those who have not had liver problems in the past.
Thai food includes paprika.
Yes. It is a key ingredient in many dishes, such as Pad See Ew (Thai-fried rice), made from eggs cooked with coconut milk.
Thai food is a good example of paprika.
Paprika can been traced back to Ancient Greece over 5,000 years ago. The Hungarian language is what "paprika" means.
What are the typical spices, condiments, and seasonings used in their dishes in Thailand?
Thai cuisine is a combination of influences from all over Asia. Its roots lie in India and China, along with Southeast Asia.
Freshness, the essential ingredient of Thai cuisine, is key. There is much more flavour when ingredients are picked early and cooked quickly. This is why meat, fish and vegetables, as well fruits, vegetables, herbs, seeds, and nuts are often eaten raw, then heated.
Sauces and spices add depth and flavor to dishes. Fresh basil, cilantro, mint, coriander (cilantro), lemongrass, ginger, turmeric, garlic, chillies, chilli paste, soy sauce, tamarind juice, oyster sauce, palm sugar, coconut milk, lime leaves, galangal root, curry powder, shrimp paste, fish sauce, tamarind water, rice vinegar, etc. are used frequently.
Almond Flour and Almond Meal: What is the Difference?
As an almond flour alternative, an almond meal is more versatile because it can be used for baking, cooking, and even making nut-free dishes.
Almond flour can also contain gluten which makes it more difficult to digest. If you have celiac disease or another digestive disorder, it's essential to avoid gluten-free foods.
Almond flour may not be considered a "superfood", per se, but it contains healthy fats as well as fibre, protein and vitamin E.
The almond meal provides nutritional benefits such as magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese. It also contains vitamin A, B1 (thiamin), C, and folate.
Because it's made from almonds, almond flour contains monounsaturated fatty acids, while almond oil contains polyunsaturated fatty acids. Both help to lower LDL (bad), and increase HDL levels.
Almond flour is high in antioxidants including phenolics, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins. These compounds protect against free radical-induced oxidative harm.
An experiment published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry showed that almond flour has an equivalent antioxidant activity to that of blueberries.
Almond flour is usually sold alongside almond milk, fortified with additional nutrients.

How To
Do You Know How to Make Curry Paste?
Curry paste includes dried chillies (scallions, shallots), galangal root and lemongrass as well as kaffir lime leaves, garlic, shrimp pastes, sugar, salt and sometimes coconut milk. It's a common ingredient in Thai cuisine.
One of the most widely used condiments in Southeast Asia is curry paste. This unique flavor can be added to many dishes including curries, soups and stir-fries as well as rice dishes, noodles, desserts, and rice dishes.
It's easy to make at-home! Follow our step by step guide below.
Step1 - Prepare Ingredients
- Before you start this recipe, make sure that all ingredients are prepared.
- Begin by peeling and cutting shallots into small pieces (about 2 cups). Then chop galangal root into small pieces (about 3 inches long) and set aside.
- Next, remove and cut the cloves of garlic (about four cloves). Next, peel and mince the lemongrass stems (about 1/2-inch thick).
- Crush the red chilli peppers with about four tablespoons of water and remove the seeds.
- Next, cut the kaffir-lime leaves into thin strips (5 inches). Take out the white part and place it in a bowl.
- Once the shrimp paste has been drained, rinse it and then coarsely crush it.
- Finally, measure out sugar and salt.
Step2 - Grind Ingredients
- Grind all ingredients together until smooth.
- The texture should be very similar to peanut butter.
- Note: if you want to reduce the amount of oil in the dish, you can substitute some water for some of the oil.
Step3 - Add Coconut Milk
- Add coconut milk to the mixture, and mix well.
- Slowly add coconut water to prevent the paste from getting too sticky.
- You can reduce the amount of chillies and increase the quantity of galangal root if you prefer it less spicy.
- For a more spicy taste, increase the amount of chillies and reduce the use of galangal root. You should enjoy the final product.
Step4 - Serve
- Serve with your favourite foods.
- Enjoy!
