Sharing a story and looking good

Great packaging is powerful, but it's most important to be able to communicate. Our packaging is a powerful tool that shares Curio’s mission and story to inspire culinary creativity, support farmers and create community.

Since our launch in 2015, we have had a strong brand identity. In 2022, a brand refresh of our entire product line will build on this heritage. We wanted to update our monthly subscription service, Secret Spice Society, this year. Secret Spice Society members get a monthly delivery of one or more spices, along with recipes, tips and a message from the founder Claire.

We're thrilled to announce, after a large project, that subscribers will be receiving their monthly delivery this September in a zero-waste, newly designed Boox shipping container. Ityng is our in-house design team member and we are proud of her work.

The box

What is a Boox box? Boox boxes are designed for multiple reuses and can be returned to the manufacturer. They do not require packaging tape or sealing, so they eliminate another single-use item. Boox shipping boxes are made of recycled materials, and they are 100% recyclable when their life cycle is over.

Boox's switch from cardboard and plastic to plastic is counterintuitive. However, they have done a third-party full life-cycle assessment (LCA) in order to prove the sustainability of their product. ThirdPartners, a global leader in carbon footprint coefficients, was hired to compare the environmental impact of Boox to that of a cardboard box. The LCA looked at different scenarios including using one Boox ten times to ship ten packages versus ten cardboard boxes recycled after use.

The impact of the manufacturing, transportation and end-of life processes were included in the analysis. The carbon footprint for producing a Boox box is higher than that of a cardboard box of comparable size, but the Boox benefits begin to show up even with low return rates. The impact becomes more significant at higher return rates. After ten uses, a Boox has only 29% the carbon footprint as a cardboard box. Booxes also weigh 44% less than cardboard and produce 44% fewer transport emissions. Overall, the LCA revealed that using Boox boxes reduces environmental impact at scale by 70%.

Boox Return Places have been conveniently placed in the US, UK and Canada. More countries will be added soon. Return Places include retail stores such as Staples and Ace Hardware. The Boox boxes are designed to be folded flat and stored easily. This allows subscribers to keep their booxes as long as they want before dropping them off. They can do this when they plan to visit a Return Place, rather than making a special journey. Boox then sends the booxes back for cleaning and re-use, completing the zero-waste cycle. Booxes beyond their useful life are recycled into new ones.

Stewardship

Kermit the Frog said, "It is not easy to be green." As a Certified B Corp ,™ Being environmentally responsible is a core value. We are excited to switch over to Boox to ship e-com shipments in support of our shared mission to be good stewards to our resources and planet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Thai spices to use?

Galangal (lemongrass), coriander, turmeric and cinnamon are the best Thai spice. Other good spices include clove, cardamom and black peppercorn as well as cloves, star anise and cloves.

Some other valuable spices include rose petals, bay leaves, curry leaves, pandan leaves, kaffir lime leaves, vanilla beans, tamarind pods, lemon grass, basil, and mint.

What's the difference of curry and curried

There is no difference in spelling. Both words refer the same thing: Indian food that uses meats and vegetables along with different seasonings.

Curry comes from Hindi word kari that means "to rub". It refers how spice mixtures are applied to food. Curry is typically prepared until the food is golden brown.

While curried dishes were once reserved only for special occasions they are now enjoyed regularly throughout India. You can choose from chicken, beef, lamb or fish as well as vegetables and rice.

Plain white rice is commonly served with curried meals. You can also add raita (a yogurt sauce), or chutney (a sweet relish).

What mint is used in Thai food?

Lime-leaf mint (Mentha cervina) is the most commonly used type of mint in Thai cuisine.

It has a mild, citrusy flavour that gives dishes a freshness and zing. Thai dishes can also be enhanced by adding other spices such galangal or coriander to their flavour.

Mint can be used in sweet or savoury dishes. For authentic Thai flavours, you must use the right spices and herbs.

Make a Thai dish next time and add some lime-leaf mint to give it extra flavor.

Enjoy your cooking!

What is the most famous ingredient in Thai cooking?

Thailand's main ingredients for all dishes are rice and curry. This combination creates an unforgettable taste.

The combination is called "Khao Pad Krai" in Thailand. This means that when two simple foods are combined, they can become irresistible and delicious.

The same applies to life. Combining hard work and perseverance can lead to great success.

The right ingredients can make you successful, like Khao Pad Krai: passion and purpose. If you put them together, you'll produce something extraordinary.

You should remember that Thai food requires more than curry and rice to create memorable meals. Try experimenting with other ingredients and see how much fun it can be!

Is it possible to add spice to a drink?

I love how spices add flavor to food. But how do you make spices liven up when they are added to drinks?

Spices can bring out the best of any beverage. Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to your favorite beverage, such as coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

But, since most recipes call to ground spices, you'll need whole spices. This is sensible, but it can be expensive, time-consuming, and requires storage space.

Here is where the magic happens. With some creativity, your favourite spices can be made into powdered forms that are easy to use. Mix them with your favorite drinks to make delicious spiced beverages.

Two ways can you make powders. One way is to grind whole spices into fine powder. A mortar and pestle is another method to grind the spices to a finer consistency.

Whichever method you choose, you'll find that the resulting powder is much easier to measure out and store than whole spices. Plus, the powder keeps well so that you won't run out of stock.

Mixing different spices can create new flavors. You could make minty water by combining spearmint and peppermint. For spicy ginger tea, use ginger and cardamom capsules.

Once you are proficient in making powdered spice, you can also apply this technique to herbs. Oregano and rosemary are all popular herbs.

The possibilities are limitless. Use powdered spices to give your beverages extra flavour or to enhance the taste of dishes such as soups, salads, and pasta.

What are the main spices, condiments, seasonings and herbs used in Thai cuisine?

Thai cuisine is a mix of Asian influences. Its roots are in India and China as well as Southeast Asia.

Freshness, the essential ingredient of Thai cuisine, is key. You get more flavor if ingredients are picked in the early stages of cooking and then cooked quickly. This is why meats and fish, as well as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and grains, are often eaten raw and served warm.

Spices and sauces add complexity and fragrance to dishes. Fresh basil, cilantro, mint, coriander (cilantro), lemongrass, ginger, turmeric, garlic, chillies, chilli paste, soy sauce, tamarind juice, oyster sauce, palm sugar, coconut milk, lime leaves, galangal root, curry powder, shrimp paste, fish sauce, tamarind water, rice vinegar, etc. These are often used.

What Thai spice is needed to make Thai food at my home?

In order to cook authentic Thai food at home you will need five spices: black pepper (cayenne), coriander seeds (coriander seeds), turmeric and cinnamon. Each ingredient is unique and plays an integral role in the creation of delicious dishes.

Black pepper adds savoury flavours, while cinnamon adds sweetness. Coriander seeds add a spicy kick, while turmeric gives curry powder its signature yellow colour. Cayenne peppers provide heat and cilantro provides freshness. The final touch is cinnamon which gives depth and complexity to any dish.

You can find each of these spices at your local grocery store, but if you'd instead buy them online, here are our recommendations for where to shop.

How To

How to Make a Garlic Pressure?

A garlic press is a valuable tool in every home cook's kitchen. You can quickly mince garlic or make a paste. It can also be used to crush whole garlic cloves into buttery spreads or garlic salt.

If you don't yet have a garlic presse, you may be wondering where to get one. Here are some tips to get you started.

First, you need a large dish. Place the bowl below the press and pour in the crushed garlic. Now, adjust the pressure regulator valve until it reaches maximum.

Next, turn the handle clockwise until you hear a click. The top of the press should lift up and expose a flat surface. This will allow you slide the blade back-and-forth over the bowl. Continue turning the handle counterclockwise until the blades close.

Finally, take out the pressed ginger and enjoy!

Here are some ways to make this versatile tool even more useful:

  • You can add minced garlic to soups and sauces, salads, dips, or as a seasoning.
  • The press can be used to crush whole garlic cloves and make buttery spread.
  • Crush whole cloves of garlic onto pizza dough before baking
  • Make roasted garlic mashed potatoes, or creamy polenta.
  • Use the press to make homemade pesto out of garlic
  • Puree garlic in a smooth vinaigrette
