Frequently Asked Questions
What are the uses of Thai spice?
Everyone has heard the term Thai spice, but not all know what it is. But once we start to feel the heat in our mouths, we wonder why it hasn't been eaten more.
But it isn't just any old spice. It is an important ingredient that gives flavor and depth to bland dishes.
Thousands of recipes call for Thai spices, but few of them include the real deal. So let's help you figure out how to ensure you're adding these delicious flavors to your meals.
Thais have been using herbs and spices in their cooking since antiquity to add flavor to food. Thai comes from the Sanskrit term for "to prepare".
Many Thais love spicy foods, even today. This preference is often due to the heat in Thailand which makes it difficult for people to stay warm without hot drinks. Thais also consume more chili peppers per capita than Americans and Europeans.
It is a great way to learn more about Thai spices. There you will find a variety of ingredients such as dried chilies fresh basil leaves curry paste and ground black pepper.
Whole peppercorns, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks and star anise may also be found.
There are two types of spices in Thai cuisine: dry and wet. Wet spices are ground finely, while dry spices are typically ground.
Dry spices can be added to any dish. A good example is chicken soup with ground red pepper. Wet spices are commonly mixed with oil or butter to form a paste.
Wet spices are commonly used in marinades and sauces. Common wet spices include oyster sauce, fish sauce and sesame oils, curry paste, hoisin sauce, and sesame seed oil.
If you want to try making Thai dishes at home, you need to know which spices go well with certain ingredients.
For example, red pepper flakes is recommended for beef. If you use seafood like shrimp, you should use white pepper instead.
If you don’t have access or the means to order from an Asian market, it is possible to order online. You will find everything from dried chilies to exotic herbs and spices here.

Thai food contains paprika.
Yes. Yes.
Thai, Mexican, Spanish, Indian and Chinese cuisines include paprika.
Paprika is a product that dates back over 5,000-years to Ancient Greece. The Hungarian language, which means "pepper", is where the word "paprika" came from.
How do I make Thai food at home using Thai spices?
In order to cook authentic Thai food at home you will need five spices: black pepper (cayenne), coriander seeds (coriander seeds), turmeric and cinnamon. Each of these ingredients has its distinct flavour profile and plays a vital role in creating delicious dishes.
Black pepper adds savoury flavours, while cinnamon adds sweetness. Coriander seeds provide a spicy kick and turmeric gives curry powder the yellow color it is known for. Cayenne peppers heat up the dish, while cilantro adds flavor and freshness. Finally, cinnamon can add depth and complexity in any dish.
You can find each of these spices at your local grocery store, but if you'd instead buy them online, here are our recommendations for where to shop.
How to Store Spices
Keep them in an airtight container away from light and heat.
If you want to keep spices fresh for a long time, place them into a dark cupboard. This will keep the spices fresh and prevent any oxidation.
Store your spices in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. You can lose the aroma and flavor of your spice if it is near a heater or window.
Spices work best in an airtight jar or tin. If storing in plastic containers, make sure there is no moisture inside the container.
Always check the seal after opening and resealing, as humidity can cause spoilage.
Don't toss out any leftover spices. Instead, use them up by adding them to other dishes. To prolong their shelf life you can freeze them.
What are the main spices, condiments, seasonings and herbs used in Thai cuisine?
Thai cuisine is a blend of influences from Asia. Its roots are in India and China as well as Southeast Asia.
The essential ingredient of Thai food is freshness. Ingredients that are quickly cooked and picked at the right time will have more flavour. This is why meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, herbs, nuts, seeds, and grains are often eaten raw and served hot.
Sauces and spices add depth and flavor to dishes. Fresh basil, cilantro, mint, coriander (cilantro), lemongrass, ginger, turmeric, garlic, chillies, chilli paste, soy sauce, tamarind juice, oyster sauce, palm sugar, coconut milk, lime leaves, galangal root, curry powder, shrimp paste, fish sauce, tamarind water, rice vinegar, etc. are commonly used.

It is very easy to make it at home. Follow our step-bystep guide below.
