What is Thai spice used for?
We've all heard the term "Thai spice" thrown around without knowing exactly what it means. But once we start to feel the heat in our mouths, we wonder why it hasn't been eaten more.
It's more than just a spice. It's an essential ingredient that adds flavor and depth to dishes that would otherwise be bland.
Although there are many recipes that call for Thai spices in large numbers, very few recipes actually use the true thing. Let's learn how to include these delicious flavors in your meals.
As far back as ancient times, Thais have been cooking with herbs and spices to add flavor to food and beverages. Thai derives its name from the Sanskrit phrase "to cook".
Even today, most Thais prefer to eat spicy foods. This preference is often explained by the hot climate in Thailand that makes it difficult to stay warm while drinking hot drinks. Additionally, Thais consume much more chili peppers than Europeans or Americans.
It is a great way to learn more about Thai spices. You'll find many ingredients there, including fresh basil leaves, dried chilies and curry paste.
You may also find whole peppercorns.
Thai cuisine has two kinds of spices: wet and dry. Most Thai cuisine uses dry spices, which are ground and pulverized finely.
Dry spices are typically added directly to a dish. For example, ground red pepper is sprinkled onto chicken soup. Mixing wet spices with oil or butter can create a paste.
Wet spices are often used in sauces, marinades, and dressings. Fish sauce, oyster sauces, sesame and sesame olive oils, curry paste and hoisin are some of the most common wet spice options.
To make Thai food at your home, it is important to understand which spices are best with particular ingredients.
Red pepper flakes can be used to season beef. If you use seafood like shrimp, you should use white pepper instead.
Online ordering is also possible if you don’t have an Asian market. There are many options for exotic herbs, spices and dried chilies.

What mint is used for Thai food?
Thai cuisine has the most widespread use of lime-leaf mint (Mentha certvina).
It has a mild, citrusy flavour that gives dishes a freshness and zing. To enhance Thai cuisine's flavour, other spices like galangal, coriander, lemongrass and garlic are often added.
Mint is versatile and can be used both in sweet and savoury recipes. For authentic Thai flavours, you must use the right spices and herbs.
Make a Thai dish next time and add some lime-leaf mint to give it extra flavor.
Enjoy your cooking!
How to Store Spices
Keep them in an airtight container away from light and heat.
Place them in a dark cupboard to store spices for extended periods. This will preserve them and prevent any oxidation.
Store your spices in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight. It is possible for the spice to lose its flavor and aroma if it's placed in close proximity to a window or heater.
Spices should be stored in an airtight tin or glass jar. Avoid storing spices in plastic containers.
Always check the seal after opening and resealing, as humidity can cause spoilage.
Don't throw out any spice leftovers. Use them instead by adding them into other dishes. You can even freeze them to extend their shelf life.

- Before you start making this recipe, prepare all ingredients.
- First, peel and chop shallots (2 cups). Next, cut galangal root into small chunks (about 3 inches) and put aside.
- Next, peel and slice garlic cloves (about four cloves). Finely chop the lemongrass stems to about 1/2 inch in thickness.
- You can then crush the red chilli bell peppers into small pieces (about 4 tablespoons), and then you can remove the seeds (optional).
- Next, cut kaffir lime leaves into thin strips (about 5 inches long). Take out the white part and place it in a bowl.
- Next, drain and wash the shrimp paste (6 ounces), and then coarsely mashing it.
- Finally, measure out sugar and salt.

Step4 - Serve
- Serve on top of your favourite foods.
- Enjoy!
