Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference in curry and curried?

There is no difference in spelling. Both words are used to describe the same thing: Indian dishes that combine meat or vegetables with various seasonings.

Curry comes from the Hindi word kari meaning "to rub." This term refers to how the spice mixture is rubbed onto the food. Curry foods are usually cooked until golden brown.

Curried dishes were once reserved for special occasions, but today, they're enjoyed frequently throughout India. These dishes can be chicken, beef (lamb), fish, or vegetables.

Curried dishes are typically served alongside plain white rice. Other common accompaniments include raita (a yogurt sauce) and chutney (a sweet relish).

How do I make Thai food at home using Thai spices?

In order to cook authentic Thai food at home you will need five spices: black pepper (cayenne), coriander seeds (coriander seeds), turmeric and cinnamon. Each ingredient has its own unique flavour profile, and each plays an important role in creating delicious dishes.

Cinnamon provides sweetness while black pepper enhances the flavours. Curry powder is given its characteristic yellow colour by turmeric and coriander seed. Cayenne peppers heat up the dish, while cilantro adds flavor and freshness. Finally, cinnamon can add depth and complexity in any dish.

You can find each of these spices at your local grocery store, but if you'd instead buy them online, here are our recommendations for where to shop.

Almond Flour or Almond Meal? What is the difference?

An almond meal, which can be used as an almond flour substitute, is more versatile than other almond flours because it can be used for baking and cooking, as well as making nut free dishes.

Almond flour could also contain gluten making it difficult for some people to digest. Gluten-free foods should be avoided if you have celiac Disease or any other digestive condition.

Almond flour isn't considered "superfood", but it is high in healthy fats, fibres, protein, vitamin E, and sodium.

The almond meal offers many nutritional benefits including iron, magnesium, zinc, manganese (thiamin), calcium, vitamin A, B1 and Vitamin C.

Almond flour is made with almonds. Almond oils contain polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. Both types reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase HDL ("good") cholesterol.

In addition, almond flour is rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids, phenolics, and proanthocyanidins. These compounds are effective in preventing oxidative damages caused by free radicals.

A study published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry found that almond flour had antioxidant activity equivalent to that of blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates, and red wine grape juice.

Almond milk is often sold with almond flour, which has been fortified with additional nutrients.

Thai food can be described as sweet, salty or sour.

How to Cut Shiitake Mushrooms

So the shiitakes have been doing well. They are fine. However, how do you cut them without cutting yourself? We tried everything. Even scissors. But they keep slipping out of our hands. What's the problem?

You have a trick. To make the mushroom stem stick out, wrap a rubber band around it and twist it tightly. This will ensure that you don't fall and break your wrists.

You may think it sounds too easy. It is. But it's also very useful.

Because the rubber band makes the stem slippery it is easy to pick it up. It's a good idea to secure the stem.

Try it now. You'll be amazed how easy it is to cut mushrooms.
