What's the difference in cooking with whole vs. ground spices? Ground Spices?

There are no differences between cooking with whole spices or ground spices. After harvesting, all spices are ground. It doesn't make a difference in terms of quality.

But the price gap is significant. Whole spices are more expensive because of the labor required to process them. But the taste is worth it.

You'll often find extra discounts for bulk purchases when you buy whole spices. You might get a discount if your entire bag is of cinnamon sticks.

The same goes for nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cardamom, etc. These spices can be purchased in bulk to save money.

Whole spices also last longer than ground spices. This is because ground spices lose their potency quickly due to oxidation.

We recommend buying whole spices because they add flavor to your recipes.

A delicious curry can be made with whole turmeric as opposed to ground turmeric. You can also use whole coriander to create a spice combination for chicken dishes.

Additionally, spices need to be ground. A large amount of whole spices is a good idea. That way, you won't run out of spices too fast.


Does Thai use ginger?

Yes. In traditional Thai cuisine, ginger is used extensively. It is commonly added to stir-fries or soups. Ginger is also used in desserts such as lassis.

Ginger is most commonly used fresh in Thailand. The ginger root is cut into thin strips, dried and stored in a sealed container for future use. From Asian markets, ginger root can be bought in cans and jars.


What are the main Flavours of Thai Cooking?

Thai cuisine includes several distinct regional cuisines. These include Northern, Central, Southern, Eastern, Western, and Northeastern Thai food. Each region is unique in its flavour profiles.

The most common flavours in Thai food are sweet, salty, sour, spicy, bitter, pungent, and nutty.

Sweetness is essential for Thais because it makes the dishes palatable. Thai cuisine includes sweet ingredients like palm sugar (gulamelaka) or coconut milk.

In Thailand, sourness is very popular. Hot dishes are often served with sour foods. This helps to balance out the heat.

Thai food also includes spicy food. Thai dishes often use spices such as chili pepper, galangal or ginger root.
