Many Thais love spicy foods, even today. This preference is often attributed to the hot weather in Thailand, which makes it difficult to keep warm without something hot to drink. Additionally, Thais consume much more chili peppers than Europeans or Americans.

You can learn the most about Thai spices by visiting a local Asian grocery. You'll find many ingredients there, including fresh basil leaves, dried chilies and curry paste.

You may also come across whole peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cardamom pods, ginger root, turmeric powder, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, fennel seeds, nutmeg, mace, mustard seed, saffron threads, garlic, onion, rice vinegar and tamarind juice.

There are two types of spices in Thai cuisine: dry and wet. Dry spices are usually ground, while wet ones are crushed or pounded finely.

Dry spices are added directly to a dish. For example, ground red pepper is sprinkled onto chicken soup. In order to make a paste out of wet spices, oil or butter is often used.

Wet spices are used in dressings, sauces and marinades. Fish sauce, oyster sauces, sesame and sesame olive oils, curry paste and hoisin are some of the most common wet spice options.

You need to be able to match certain spices with Thai ingredients if you wish to make Thai food at home.

For example, red pepper flakes is recommended for beef. If you use seafood like shrimp, you should use white pepper instead.

Online ordering is also possible if you don’t have an Asian market. There are many options for exotic herbs, spices and dried chilies.

What is the difference in curry and curried?

It doesn't matter how the spelling is written. Both words refer the same thing: Indian food that uses meats and vegetables along with different seasonings.

Curry comes from Hindi word kari that means "to rub". It refers how spice mixtures are applied to food. Curried foods are typically cooked until browned.

While curried dishes were once reserved only for special occasions they are now enjoyed regularly throughout India. They include chicken, beef and lamb as well as fish, vegetables and rice.

Plain white rice is usually served with curried dishes. The most common accompaniments are raita (a yogurt paste) and chutney.


Almond Flour and Almond Meal: What is the Difference?

As an almond flour alternative, an almond meal is more versatile because it can be used for baking, cooking, and even making nut-free dishes.

Almond flour may also contain gluten, making it difficult to digest. Avoid gluten-free food if you have celiac disease, or any other digestive disorder.

Almond flour may not be considered a "superfood", per se, but it contains healthy fats as well as fibre, protein and vitamin E.

The almond meal offers many nutritional benefits including iron, magnesium, zinc, manganese (thiamin), calcium, vitamin A, B1 and Vitamin C.

Almond flour is made from almonds and contains monounsaturated fat acids. Almond oil, however, contains polyunsaturated oils. Both help to lower LDL (bad), and increase HDL levels.

Almond flour also contains antioxidants like phenolics and flavonoids. These compounds are effective in preventing oxidative damages caused by free radicals.

A study published by the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry revealed that almond flour had an antioxidant activity equal to that of blueberries.

Almond flour can be purchased with almond milk that has been supplemented with nutrients.
