Amanda Csolak Spice Station Silver Lake: Written by Amanda Csolak
A good mixologist knows that you will need to stock your home bar with a few essential ingredients. Other than the obvious decanters filled with liquor, bitters and ice, herbs can transform a classic cocktail into something magical.
For years, herbs have been used to add a sweet and smoky flavor to food. But what about cocktails. It's not a new idea to use herbs in cocktails. People have been using herbs in cocktails for centuries.
We will discuss the history of making cocktails with herbs and how these herbs can transform plain jane alcohol mixes into spicy, flavorful and potent concoctions. All this and more will be discussed below. Learn more about using herbs to make cocktails.
Herbs and Cocktails: A History
Herbal cocktails are not new. The mojito, for instance, has been around since centuries. The idea of adding lavender to your lemon drop cocktail may be a bit more modern and raise eyebrows.
The minty Mojito is among the oldest cocktail containing an herbal ingredient. While the exact history of this classic drink is lost to time, historians have traced its roots back to Sir Frances Drake in 1586, when a medicinal concoction was named after him. Francis Drake was one of a group of privateers that Queen Elizabeth I commissioned to plunder Spanish cities in the New World. He sailed off without trying to take anything after he had travelled across the globe by ship. He may have had a sudden change of heart. Maybe the city that he was aiming for had been warned by King Philip II, of Spain, of his impending arrival. He fired just a few shots before sailing off.
He left Havana largely unharmed but his visit was still a big event. In fact, he became so famous that a drink was named after him. The drink was called the Draque and consisted of sugar, lime, mint, acane spirit (aguardiente).
Cocktail Herbs Most Commonly Used
Herbs can be used in a variety of cocktails. Cocktails today often contain the following ingredients:
- Basil
- Cardamom
- Cinnamon
- Ginger root
- Lavender
- Mint
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Vanilla Bean
Use dried herbs in your next cocktail
When most people make cocktails, the herbs are usually fresh. Although using dried herbs may not be as common as fresh herbs, they can add a surprising flavor to classic cocktails.
It is important to strain out dried herbs before serving a cocktail. The dried herbs can be steeped in simple syrup for up to 24 hour before use. Before serving, strain all dried herbs. You don't want any spices powders floating in your cocktail, unless it is part of the garnish. For example, one of my favorite cocktails is garnished black pepper.
In general, when substituting dried herbs for fresh herbs in a recipe, you should use one-third the amount of dried herbs specified.
My Three Favorite Cocktails made with Dried Herbs
I have been drinking cocktails for almost twenty years. As I celebrate my 41st year birthday, I am looking forward to celebrating it with family and friends.
My taste for a good drink has changed over the years. In my 20s, I would order a cranberry-vodka cocktail with its slightly bitter but sweet taste. It was then that I began a beautiful friendship with bitters and other complex flavors. The classic cranberry cocktail doesn't contain bitters, but the tart cranberry flavor acts as an introduction to bitters. Some choose to stick to the predictable flavors of cranberry-flavored vodkas. I wanted to try new flavors and my taste preferences have evolved over time. My taste buds prefer alcoholic drinks with a spicy, strong flavor these days. I also enjoy trying out new cocktails while I'm on the town.
These are my top three favorite cocktail recipes that include dry herbs:
- This cocktail is sweet and spicy with cardamom and cinnamon. It also has cloves and star anise. This spicy cocktail of gin, pear syrup and black pepper is garnished with sliced pears and black pepper. It will leave you with a sweet and smoky taste in your mouth.
- Lavender Vodka Soda - Lavender is not usually used in cocktails. This one, however, surprised me. Made with lavender liqueur and vodka. When I first tried this unique twist on the classic soda vodka, it really stuck with my. This cocktail has become a favorite of mine. It is garnished even with lavender flowers.
- Basil Lime Margarita - A delicious twist on the classic margarita. This version includes tequila with lime juice, simple syrup and basil leaves. This flavor is sweet and refreshing. Below I have included the recipe for my favorite cocktail.
Basil Lime Margarita Recipe
This zesty herbal cocktail revitalizes the classic margarita with a hint basil.
Ingredients:
- 2 fl oz. Patron Silver Tequila or Roca Patron silver Tequila
- 1 fl oz. Fresh lime juice
- 1 fl oz. Simple syrup
- 3 whole dried Basil leaves
- Kosher Salt
- A fresh sliced lime wheel as a garnish
Instructions:
- Salt the rim of the glass by moistening it with lime, and then placing the glass face-down on a surface that is covered in salt. The salt will stick to the glass. Set glass aside.
- In a cocktail mixer, combine all the liquid ingredients with 2 dried whole basil leaves. Shake vigorously to chill.
- Strain into a cocktail glass with fresh ice
- Garnish the dish with a limewheel and any remaining basil leaves.
Enjoy Responsibly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thai use ginger?
The answer is yes. Traditional Thai cuisine uses ginger extensively. Ginger is often used in stir-fries and soups, as well as desserts and drinks, such as lassis.
Ginger is native to China, Japan, and Korea, and its origins date back more than 5,000 years. It is believed that ginger originated in Southeast Asia where it was grown for medicinal purposes.
Ginger is well-known for its ability to relieve nausea and stimulate digestion. It may even help prevent migraines. Ginger can also be used to treat arthritis, muscle spasms, joint pains, or relieve them.
In Thailand, ginger is most often used fresh. It is sliced into thin strips and then dried before being stored for later use. Ginger root can be purchased in cans or jars at Asian markets.
Is it possible to add spice to a drink?
I love spices adding flavour to food. How can you make spices come to life when they are used in drinks?
Spices add a wonderful depth to any beverage. A dash of cinnamon and nutmeg can make any beverage more delicious, including coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and cocktails.
However, most recipes call for ground spice so you will need fresh whole spices. While this makes sense, it is costly, takes time and requires storage space.
This is where magic happens. You can transform your favourite spices into an easy-to-use powdered form with ingenuity. To make tasty spiced drinks, you can combine them with your favourite beverages.
These powders can be made in two ways. One way is to grind whole spices into fine powder. A mortar and pestle is another method to grind the spices to a finer consistency.
It doesn't matter what method you choose, the result is easier to measure out than whole spices and easier to store. Powder keeps well, so you will never run out.
You can experiment with mixing spices to create different flavours. For minty water you could mix spearmint with peppermint leaves. You can also make spicy ginger-ginger tea by combining ginger and cardamom seeds.
Once you've learned how to make powdered spices from scratch, you can apply the same process to herbs. You can use basil, rosemary and thyme as common herbs.
The possibilities are limitless. Powdered spices are a great way to make your drinks more flavorful or to enhance dishes like soups and salads.
What spices are commonly used in Thai cuisine?
Thai cuisine is well known for its diverse flavour profiles. These flavours come from unique and flavorful spices that create various delicious dishes.
Common ingredients for Thai cooking are galangal, lemongrass, kaffirlim leaves, chillies and garlic.
Each one of these spices adds to Thai cuisine’s unique flavour profile. It is used often in soups and curries; galangal lends a slightly peppery taste to dishes; chillies add a spicy kick; garlic gives dishes an umami depth; shrimp paste adds a subtle, but fragrant, aroma to dishes; coriander brings out a mild, yet pleasant aroma to dishes; cumin adds a smoky flavor to dishes; and turmeric gives food a vivid yellow color.
These spices are combined to create complex flavour profiles specific to Thai cuisine. The combination of spices allows chefs to create dishes that are both delicious and aromatic. If you're looking to bring the flavours of Thailand into your kitchen, be sure to stock up on these spices!
Thai food uses paprika?
Yes. It is an ingredient in many dishes, including Pad See Ew (Thai fried rice), from eggs cooked in coconut milk.
Thai cuisine, Mexican, Spanish and Indian food, as well as Thai and Balkan dishes, contain paprika.
Paprika dates back more than 5,000 years to Ancient Greece. The word "paprika" comes from the Hungarian language meaning "pepper. "
Which Thai spice do I need to cook Thai food at home?
Five essential spices are required to create authentic Thai cuisine at home. These include black pepper, turmeric, coriander seed, coriander and cinnamon. Each ingredient is unique and plays an integral role in the creation of delicious dishes.
Black pepper adds savoury flavours, while cinnamon adds sweetness. Coriander seeds add a spicy kick, while turmeric gives curry powder its signature yellow colour. Cayenne peppers bring the heat while cilantro adds freshness. A final ingredient is cinnamon, which adds depth and complexity.
These spices are available at most grocery stores. However, if you prefer to order them online, we have recommendations.

How To
How do you decide which spices to purchase?
It is important to know how you can choose the right spices and herbs to cook. There are hundreds of options, so where do you begin when deciding which ones to add to your pantry?
When choosing spices, there are three things you should consider: the flavour profile, shelf-life, and cost. There are many flavour profiles that can be used depending on how you cook meat, poultry, fish and vegetables as well as beans, grains, pastas, eggs, bread, cakes, and other foods. You'll need to narrow your choices once you've chosen a category.
The shelf life of spices can also vary. Some spices last forever, while others expire quickly. Cayenne pepper, for example, can last years while oregano, on the other hand, loses its potency within two months. Then there's the price. The price of spices can vary from $1 per tablespoon to over $100 per ounce. This means that spice prices can vary widely.
It's also important to determine if organic or nonorganic ingredients you prefer. Organic products use fewer pesticides, chemicals, and other harmful substances than traditional alternatives. This makes them safer for you and the environment. You'll have to balance the benefits and costs of organic products.
The best way to get the perfect spices for your home is to shop online. Online retailers provide extensive information about each product including reviews, prices, ratings and ratings.
Once you've narrowed down the list, it's possible to order directly from the retailer. Once you receive your items, store them safely in airtight containers away from heat and light.
