Chimichurri is a condiment that originated in Argentina and Uruguay and is now making its way across the American restaurant landscape. It’s a bright green sauce that’s great with grilled meats and vegetables.
It’s easy to make and a perfect addition to your barbecue or grilling arsenal! We’ve got some great Latin American spice blends that you can use to make your own chimichurri.
Cilantro
Cilantro adds a bright and herbaceous element to this Latin American favorite. This sauce is great on steak, chicken, pork chops, shrimp, and even veggies!
This recipe is so simple to make and will keep well in the refrigerator. You can use it as a salad dressing, a dipping sauce for grilled meats and veggies, or as a marinade!
It’s easy to make chimichurri sauce using fresh herbs and a few ingredients you probably have on hand. Just be sure to use fresh cilantro and parsley from your produce section and not dried!
Parsley
Parsley is a common ingredient in Latin American chimichurri sauce, and it adds an herbaceous kick to the mix. It’s a simple combination of finely chopped herbs, garlic, vinegar, and oil that’s often served with grilled steak or poultry.
The tanginess of the garlic and red wine vinegar is counterbalanced by the fresh, bright flavor of the parsley, making it the perfect accompaniment to your favorite summer dishes.
The most authentic Argentinean chimichurri is made in a mortar and pestle, but it can be made quickly and easily with a food processor. Just be sure to pulse until the ingredients are finely chopped.
Red Pepper Flakes
The use of red pepper flakes in Latin American chimichurri sauce makes it a bit spicy. However, you can still enjoy this condiment without adding a lot of spice by using dried red chili flakes instead of fresh ones.
Traditional Argentinian chimichurri is made with parsley, garlic, oregano, olive oil and vinegar. It's delicious as a marinade or drizzling over grilled meats.
This quick and easy version can be made in just 15 minutes! It's perfect for dipping empanadas, grilled chicken, or chorizo. You can also make it ahead and keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
Garlic
Argentinian chimichurri sauce, made with parsley, oregano, garlic, oil and vinegar, is the traditional accompaniment to grilled steaks and pork sausages. It is also used as a marinade and dipping sauce for empanadas, chicken wings and pork chops.
Garlic adds a savory flavor and heat to the recipe. You can use a few cloves or more depending on your preference.
Cilantro is another key herb in this Latin American chimichurri sauce recipe. It needs to be fresh and finely chopped. Dried cilantro doesn’t work well here and is better left out altogether.
Vinegar
Vinegar is an essential component in Latin American chimichurri sauce. It is used to bring the flavors of parsley, oregano, garlic, and red pepper flakes together and adds a bit of acidity.
This sauce is a staple in Argentina and other parts of South America and has become popular throughout the region. Chimichurri is a great addition to grilled meats and can also be used as a dressing for salads.
The basic recipe is fresh herbs (parsley, cilantro), garlic, oil, and vinegar, but variations are available. Some chimichurri is prepared in a food processor or blender, while others are stirred until smooth. Regardless of the method, it is easy to store.
Olive Oil
Olive oil is one of the most popular cooking oils in the world. It’s considered healthy and has a high level of antioxidants, making it a great choice for cooking, baking, or frying.
When making Latin American chimichurri sauce, it is important to use fresh herbs and a good quality olive oil. Whizzing the ingredients together before adding the liquid will help to keep the herbs bright and green.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between cooking with whole spices and using ground spices? Ground Spices?
There are no significant differences in the cooking of whole and ground spices. All spices are ground after harvesting. So there is no difference in quality.
However, the price differences are significant. Whole spices cost more because of the labour involved in processing them. But the taste is worth it.
Buy whole spices and you'll often receive additional discounts. For example, you might receive a discount if you buy an entire bag of cinnamon sticks.
The same applies to nutmeg and cloves, ginger or cardamom. You might be able to save money by buying these spices in bulk.
Ground spices are also more durable than whole spices. This is because ground spices lose their potency quickly due to oxidation.
The main reason we recommend whole spices over dried is that they can add lots of flavor to recipes.
For instance, you can make a delicious curry with whole turmeric instead of ground turmeric. For chicken dishes, whole coriander seeds can be ground to make a spice blend.
Grinding spices takes time. When you buy whole spices, it makes sense to buy a large quantity. So that you don’t run out of spices, it’s a smart move.
What are the most important flavours in Thai cuisine?
Thai cuisine includes several distinct regional cuisines. These include Northern, Central and Southern Thai food. Each region is unique in its flavour profiles.
Thai food can be described as sweet, salty or sour.
Thais value sweetness as it makes the food more enjoyable. Thai cuisine includes sweet ingredients like palm sugar (gulamelaka) or coconut milk.
Thailand's most popular food is sourness. Hot dishes are often served with sour foods. This combination helps balance out the heat.
Thai food is not complete without spicy food. Thai dishes often use spices such as chili pepper, galangal or ginger root.
What are the 11 spice ingredients in Indian cooking?
Indian cuisine includes eleven spices, including cumin, coriander, cumin, mustard, fennel, and nigella seed, as well as black pepper, cloves and cinnamon sticks, dry red chill powder, turmeric, cardamom, and black pepper.
These ingredients can also be used in almost any dish. These spices impart a distinct flavor to dishes such as curries (lentils), curries and chutneys. They also add a unique taste to rice, bread, and sweets.
For health reasons, spices are also beneficial. Turmeric, for example, is known to fight cancer cells. Cloves protect against bad breath. Black pepper reduces cholesterol levels. Cinnamon lowers blood pressure. And ginger aids digestion.
A spice rack is a great kitchen tool because it allows you to experiment with different combinations of flavors. You can mix your own spices or purchase ready-made spice mixes that include many essential spices.
Some people choose not to add spice to their food. Some people believe spices can only mask the natural flavor of food and don't improve it. A pinch of salt and pepper can enhance the flavor of your food.
Most chefs agree that spices are a vital part of culinary art. Without spices, many dishes are bland and tasteless. You might be inspired to try something new next time you feel adventurous.

Do you know how to make curry paste?
Curry paste contains dried chillies and shallots, galangal roots, lemongrass (kaffir lime leaf), garlic, shrimp paste, sugar and salt. It's used extensively in Thai cuisine.
One of the most widely used condiments in Southeast Asia is curry paste. It gives many dishes a unique taste, including curries, soups stir-fries, stir-fries and salads.
It's not difficult to make at home! Follow our step-by–step guide below.
Step1 - Prepare Ingredients
- You need to prepare all ingredients before starting this recipe.
- Start by peeling and chopping shallots (about 2 cups). Then, cut the galangal roots into small pieces (approximately 3 inches in length), and then set aside.
- Next, cut four garlic cloves into pieces. Lemongrass stems about 1/2 inch thick should be removed and finely chopped.
- You can then crush the red chilli bell peppers into small pieces (about 4 tablespoons), and then you can remove the seeds (optional).
- Next, trim the kaffir lime leaves into strips about 5 inches in length. Take out the white part and place it in a bowl.
- After draining the shrimp paste, wash it well and then coarsely smash it.
- Finally, measure the sugar and salt.
Step2 - Grind Ingredients
- Grind all ingredients together until smooth.
- It should have a texture similar to peanut butter.
- You can replace some oil with water if you wish to reduce the oil content of your dish.
Step3 - Add Coconut Milk
- Mix coconut milk with the mixture.
- Slowly add coconut water to prevent the paste from getting too sticky.
- If you prefer less spicy, add fewer chillies and more galangal root.
- You may prefer it hotter, so add more chilies or less galangalroot. The end result should be delicious.
Step4 – Serve
- Top with your favorite food.
- Enjoy!
