Frequently Asked Questions
Which Thai spice do I need to cook Thai food at home?
For authentic Thai cooking at home, you need to be familiar with five essential spices: cayenne, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper. Each ingredient plays a crucial role in the creation delicious dishes.
Cinnamon brings out the sweetness of black pepper, while white pepper enhances the savoury flavours. Coriander seeds provide a spicy kick and turmeric gives curry powder the yellow color it is known for. Cayenne peppers add heat, while cilantro brings out the freshness. The final touch is cinnamon which gives depth and complexity to any dish.
Each of these spices can be found at your local grocery, but you may prefer to buy them online.
What's the difference between cooking whole and with ground spices? Ground Spices?
There is no difference in cooking with whole spices and cooked with ground spices. After harvesting, all spices are ground. The quality is the same.
However, the price differences are significant. Whole spices cost more because of the labour involved in processing them. But the flavour is well worth it.
If you purchase whole spices in bulk, you might get an additional discount. You might get a discount if your entire bag is of cinnamon sticks.
The same is true for nutmeg cloves ginger, cardamom, and ginger. You might be able to save money by buying these spices in bulk.
Ground spices don't last as long as whole spices. Ground spices lose their potency very quickly due to oxidation.
Whole spices are a great way to add personality and flavor to your recipe.
A delicious curry can be made with whole turmeric as opposed to ground turmeric. You can also grind whole coriander leaves to make a spice mix for chicken dishes.
Additionally, spices need to be ground. It makes sense to purchase large quantities of whole spices when you are buying them. So you don't run short of spices.
What is the difference between curry and curried?
There is no difference in spelling. Both words refer to the same thing: an Indian dish combining meat or vegetables with various seasonings.
Curry is derived in Hindi from kari, which means to rub. This refers the way that the spice mix is applied onto the food. Curry foods are usually cooked until golden brown.
Although curried dishes used to be reserved for special occasions, today they are enjoyed all over India. They can be made with chicken, beef or lamb and include vegetables as well.
Plain white rice is usually served with curried dishes. Other common accompaniments include raita (a yogurt sauce) and chutney (a sweet relish).

Thai food is not complete without spicy food. Thai cuisine is rich in spices like galangal, ginger root and chilli pepper.
What mint is used for Thai food?
Lime-leaf mint (Mentha cervina) is the most commonly used type of mint in Thai cuisine.
Its mild, lemony taste adds freshness and zest to dishes. Thai dishes can also be enhanced by adding other spices such galangal or coriander to their flavour.
Mint is a versatile herb that can be used in both sweet as well as savoury meals. To achieve authentic Thai flavours, it is important to use the right spices, herbs and aromatics.
