Herbs and Spices for Mediterranean Cooking

Spices for Mediterranean cooking

The Mediterranean diet includes many fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains, but it also has a lot of herbs and spices that boost flavor without adding a lot of calories or sodium.

Spices add aroma, texture, and a bit of color to dishes while helping to lower blood pressure. They also boost immunity and protect against heart disease.

Oregano

Oregano is one of the most popular herbs in Mediterranean cuisine. It pairs well with grilled meats and fish, and is a key ingredient in Greek salad.

It also is a classic addition to pasta sauce. The herb is known for its assertive, peppery flavor.

It can be found fresh or dried. Dried oregano can be purchased in most grocery stores and spice shops.

Thyme

Thyme is a very fragrant herb that adds a delicious flavor to many dishes. It can be used fresh or dried, and works well in soups, roasted vegetables, pasta, sauces, pizzas and more.

Thyme can also be added to marinades and seasoning blends. It is also considered a medicinal herb.

Its scent is renowned for its aromatherapy benefits and can help relieve a cold or cough. It also helps reduce stress levels.

Basil

Basil, an herb in the mint family, is essential to many Mediterranean dishes. Its sweet and peppery flavor goes well with tomatoes, garlic and olive oil.

It’s also a popular ingredient in pesto sauce, Margherita pizza and a classic caprese salad. It can be used in a variety of ways, including whole, shredded or chopped.

There are many different types of basil, all with their own unique flavors and aromas. Some are more commonly used in Italian and other Mediterranean cooking, while others are more savory and have a citrusy or cinnamon-tinged scent.

Parsley

Parsley, (Petroselinum crispum), a biennial herb, is one of the most popular spices in Mediterranean cuisine. Its mildly aromatic flavour is a mainstay in salads, soups, sauces, and other dishes.

It can also be used as a garnish for grilled meats and fish. Its fresh taste and nutrient-rich properties make it an essential ingredient in many of the recipes below.

Parsley is a natural diuretic, which means it helps the kidneys flush out excess water and salt from your body. This can also help reduce bloating, blood pressure, and other related health conditions.

Rosemary

The fragrant, evergreen leaves and white, pink, purple or blue flowers of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) have a pine-needle-like flavor that lends itself to a variety of foods. It’s used liberally in Italian cooking and is a staple of Mediterranean cuisine.

Rosemary can be harvested fresh from the garden or dried. Dried rosemary should be stored in an airtight container, away from heat and moisture.

In addition to adding delicious, authentic taste to your dishes, rosemary has many health benefits. It contains carnosic acid, which has antibacterial and antioxidant properties. It also helps to support liver function and increase blood flow, promoting healthy digestion.

Garlic

Garlic is one of the most important ingredients in Mediterranean cooking and can help you create authentic Mediterranean dishes at home. It’s a versatile and affordable ingredient that can be used to add a punch of flavor to any dish.

It has a strong and pungent flavor, but its health benefits are also plentiful. It packs a wide range of sulfur compounds, including allicin, which accounts for its many medicinal properties.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is one of the most important ingredients in Mediterranean cuisine. It’s known to have a host of health benefits, including helping to reduce blood pressure and improving triglycerides.

It also contains a number of antioxidants that help prevent cell damage caused by free radicals in the body. It’s important to know what type of olive oil you use when cooking at home and what the differences are between extra-virgin and regular olive oils.

It’s best to buy a variety of high-quality olive oils so you can have a balanced taste and nutritional profile in your cooking. It’s also a good idea to purchase your oil in a container that blocks sunlight, so you can keep it fresh longer.

Almond Flour vs. Almond Meal: What's the Difference?

An almond meal, which can be used as an almond flour substitute, is more versatile than other almond flours because it can be used for baking and cooking, as well as making nut free dishes.

Almond flour might also contain gluten, which can make it hard to digest. It is important to avoid gluten-free products if you have celiac or other digestive disorders.

While almond flour isn't considered a "superfood" per se, it contains healthy fats, fibre, protein, and vitamin E. It's also low in calories and sodium and contains no cholesterol.

The nutritional benefits of the almond meal include magnesium, copper, iron, zinc, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and vitamins A, B1 (thiamin), and C. In addition, it provides 25 percent of the daily value for folate, 20 percent for niacin, 15 percent for pantothenic acid, and 5 percent for riboflavin.

Almond flour is made with almonds. Almond oils contain polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. Both can lower LDL cholesterol and increase HDL cholesterol.

Almond flour is high in antioxidants including phenolics, flavonoids, and proanthocyanidins. These compounds protect against oxidative damage caused by free radicals.

A study published in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry found that almond flour had antioxidant activity equivalent to that of blueberries, cranberries, pomegranates, and red wine grape juice.

Almond flour is commonly sold together with almondmilk, which has additional nutrients.

Dried herbs can be added to soups stews, casseroles pasta dishes rice dishes salads and desserts. Sprinkle the spice mixture evenly on the dish, and let it sit for five to ten minutes before you serve.

As snacks, leftover cooked vegetables and fruits can be added into your favourite recipes.

For the best flavor of fresh herbs, you can chop them up or tear them apart and then add them to your favorite foods. It is also possible to freeze herbs and spices in muffin cups or ice cube trays. Once frozen transfer to zip-top plastic bags or freezer bags.
