How to Store Spices

Keep them out of the sun and heat.

To store spices for longer periods of time, place them in a dark cupboard. This will keep the spices fresh and prevent any oxidation.

Your spices should be kept in cool and dry areas, away from direct sunlight. It is possible for the spice to lose its flavor and aroma if it's placed in close proximity to a window or heater.

Spices work best in an airtight jar or tin. If storing in plastic containers, make sure there is no moisture inside the container.

It is vital to always check the seal after opening, resealing and before storing.

You don't have to throw out leftover spices. You can make use of them by adding them to your favorite dishes. They can be frozen to prolong their shelf-life.

These recipes will help you spice up your next potato dish.

What are the seven Indian spices?

Indian spices include a range of spices that are used to make Indian cuisine. They are usually made up of cardamoms, cumins, corianders, turmeric and fenugreek. The spices are used to enhance the flavour and aroma of foods by combining and complementing natural ingredients, such as meats or vegetables. The unique flavour profiles created by spices are what make Indian cooking special.

Cardamom's sweet, pungent flavor is balanced with ginger and citrus notes. It is commonly used to flavour rice dishes like biryani and curries. Cumin has a earthy aroma and a rich, bitter flavour. It is used to spice up curries, dals and meat dishes. Coriander gives dishes a mild nuttiness due to its sweet citrus aroma. It is often used in seasoning vegetables and lentils.

Turmeric is a spice that has an earthy flavor. It can be mixed with mustard, spices and pepper hints. This spice is popularly used in curries as well as other dishes. Fenugreek has an earthy aroma, a slight bitter flavor, and earthy tones. It is often used to season meat dishes like kebabs and curries. Ginger is spicy, pungent, and has hints of citrus. It adds the perfect kick to dishes such as curries, chutneys, and soups. Asafoetida, or hing, has a pungent aroma and strong flavor. It can be substituted for onion and garlic in some recipes.

These spices together create unique flavors that make Indian food so special.

How To

How do you store your cooking spices?

I'll show you how to store spices properly for best results. First, we must understand how food is stored.

Because light can diminish the flavour of spices, they should be kept in sealed containers. This is because oxygen reacts with organic compounds like those in spices to cause oxidation.

To prevent oxidation, spices should be stored in dark cupboards. If these conditions are not met, spices will quickly lose their flavour.

The best way to preserve the flavour of spices is to keep them in airtight jars away from direct sunlight.

You can flavor water by adding herbs and spices. For example, you could mix 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon in 1/2 cup of warm milk and stir it well. Add a squeeze or lemon juice to the mixture and serve immediately.

Dried herbs and spices can be added to soups and stews, casseroles and rice dishes. Sprinkle the spice mixture evenly on the dish, and let it sit for five to ten minutes before you serve.

Remaining cooked vegetables, fruit and meats can be used in your favorite recipes to make snacks.

If you want to take advantage of the flavours of fresh herbs and spices, chop or tear them up and add them to foods while they're still hot. You can freeze herbs or spices by placing them on ice cube tray or muffin cups. Once frozen transfer to zip-top plastic bags or freezer bags.
