What are the primary Flavours in Thai cooking?

But most recipes call for ground spices, meaning you'll need fresh whole spices. While this makes sense, it is costly, takes time and requires storage space.

Here's where the magic happens. With some creativity, your favourite spices can be made into powdered forms that are easy to use. You can then mix the spices into your favorite beverages to make delicious spiced drinks.

These powders can be made in two ways. A second method is to grind whole spices into fine powder. Another way is to grind the spices in a mortar and pestle.

Whichever method you choose, you'll find that the resulting powder is much easier to measure out and store than whole spices. Plus, the powder keeps well so that you won't run out of stock.

You can even experiment with mixing different spices to create new flavours. To make minty water, you can combine spearmint and peppermint leaves. You can also make spicy ginger-ginger tea by combining ginger and cardamom seeds.

Once you've mastered making powdered spices, you can apply the same technique to herbs. Basil, rosemary, thyme and sage are some of the most popular herbs.

The possibilities are limitless. Use powdered spices to give your beverages extra flavour or to enhance the taste of dishes such as soups, salads, and pasta.

Coriander seeds and cumin seeds are the eleven main spices in Indian cuisine.

These ingredients can also be used in almost any dish. These spices add a unique flavor to dishes like curries, chutneys and pickles, rice, bread, and desserts.

The health benefits of spices can be found in their medicinal properties. To fight cancer cells, turmeric is an example. Bad breath is prevented by cloves. Black pepper reduces cholesterol levels. Cinnamon lowers blood pressure. And ginger aids digestion.

A spice rack is a fantastic kitchen tool that allows you experiment with different combinations. You can mix your own spices or purchase ready-made spice mixes that include many essential spices.

You might also find whole peppercorns and cloves as well as cinnamon sticks, star anise pods (star anise), cardamom pods ginger root, cumin seeds coriander seeds seeds, fennel seed, nutmeg mace, mustard seeds, saffron threads garlic, onion, rice vinegar, and tamarind juice.

Thai cuisine uses both dry and wet spices. Dry spices are usually ground, while wet ones are crushed or pounded finely.

Dry spices are added directly to a dish. For example, ground red pepper is sprinkled onto chicken soup. To make a paste, wet spices are often mixed with butter or oil.

Wet spices are commonly used in marinades and sauces. Common wet spices include oyster sauce, fish sauce and sesame oils, curry paste, hoisin sauce, and sesame seed oil.

You need to be able to match certain spices with Thai ingredients if you wish to make Thai food at home.

Red pepper flakes should be used if you're using beef. White pepper is better for seafood such as shrimp.

How to Make a Garlic Pressure?

A garlic press is a valuable tool in every home cook's kitchen. You can quickly mince garlic or make a paste. It can also be used to crush whole garlic cloves into buttery spreads or garlic salt.

However, if you don’t already have a garlic pressing machine, you might wonder how to get one. These tips will help you get started.

First, you will need a large bowl. Place the bowl beneath the press, and then pour the crushed garlic in it. Now, adjust the pressure regulator valve until it reaches maximum.

Next, turn the handle counterclockwise until you hear a click. The top part of the press should lift off and reveal a flat surface that will allow you to slide the blade back and forth over the bowl. Continue turning the handle in a clockwise direction until the blades come to a close.

Finally, take out the pressed ginger and enjoy!

Here are other ways you can make use of this versatile tool.

  • Use minced garlic in soups, sauces and salads as a seasoning or even as a garnish.
  • Use the press to crush whole garlic cloves into a buttery spread
  • Crush whole cloves of garlic onto pizza dough before baking
