We all have heard the term Thai spices, but we don't understand what it really means. It makes our mouths water when we try it.

It's not just any spice. It's an essential ingredient, which adds depth and flavor to dishes otherwise bland.

Thousands of recipes call for Thai spices, but few of them include the real deal. So let's help you figure out how to ensure you're adding these delicious flavors to your meals.

As far back as ancient times, Thais have been cooking with herbs and spices to add flavor to food and beverages. Thai comes from the Sanskrit term for "to prepare".

Most Thais like spicy food, even today. This preference is often attributed to the hot weather in Thailand, which makes it difficult to keep warm without something hot to drink. Thais consume more chili peppers than Americans and Europeans.

You can learn the most about Thai spices by visiting a local Asian grocery. There will be a large selection of ingredients available including dried chilies (fresh basil leaves), curry paste, ground black pepper, and curry paste.

Whole peppercorns, whole cloves, cinnamon sticks and star anise may also be found.

Thai cuisine can use either dry or wet spices. Wet spices are ground finely, while dry spices are typically ground.

Dry spices are typically added directly to a dish. Ground red pepper can be sprinkled on chicken soup, for example. Wet spices are commonly mixed with oil or butter to form a paste.

Wet spices are often used in sauces, marinades, and dressings. Wet spices are used in many dishes, including fish sauce, oyster, sesame, sesame, sesame oil and curry paste.

Thai cuisine can be made at home by learning which spices work well with specific ingredients.

Red pepper flakes should be used if you're using beef. White pepper is better for seafood such as shrimp.

Can you add spice to a beverage?

I love how spices bring flavour to food. But how do you make spices liven up when they are added to drinks?

Spices can bring out the best of any beverage. Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to your favorite beverage, such as coffee, tea, or hot chocolate.

But most recipes call for ground spices, meaning you'll need fresh whole spices. This is sensible, but it can be expensive, time-consuming, and requires storage space.

This is where magic happens. It's possible to transform your favorite spices into a powdered form that is easy to use with a bit of creativity. Mix them with your favorite drinks to make delicious spiced beverages.

These powders can be made in two ways. One method involves grinding whole spices to a fine powder. Another method is to use a mortar & pestle to grind the spices until they are finely ground.

Whichever method you choose, you'll find that the resulting powder is much easier to measure out and store than whole spices. Powder also keeps well so you won't run dry.

You can even experiment with mixing different spices to create new flavours. You could make minty water by combining spearmint and peppermint. To make spicy ginger tea, you can also combine ginger and cardamom pods.

Once you are proficient in making powdered spice, you can also apply this technique to herbs. Oregano and rosemary are all popular herbs.

The possibilities are limitless. You can use powdered spice to enhance the flavour of your drinks or dishes like soups, salads, or pasta.
