You probably think of fireworks and barbecues when you think of Independence Day. Food is usually the main focus of many celebrations. There's always been something special about this American holiday. As we prepare to celebrate the holiday, let's look back at what Americans ate in the early years of their independence.

First Independence Day Meal

John Adams and Abigail Adams shared a meal on the first day of America’s independence. This was July 4, 1776. John Adams would go on to be the second president of the United States. It is said that the meal consisted of green peas, boiled potatoes, and poached salmon with egg sauce. The meal was followed by apple Pandowdy, a dessert. Today, such a meal might seem a bit strange. At the time, however, turtle soup was an especially popular summer dish.

The first Americans celebrated Independence Day every year, even after the very First Fourth of July. John Adams wrote his wife Abigail about his feelings on the Fourth of Jul: "I'm apt to think that succeeding generations will celebrate it as the great anniversary festival...It should be solemnized by Pomp and Parade with Shews Games Sports, Guns Bells Bonfires Illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other forevermore."

John Adams would be happy to know that we do all these things, and even more, to celebrate our independence every year. Many Americans today are focused on the incredible food. Every Fourth of July, Americans buy hundreds of millions of dollars worth of food like watermelons and hamburger patties. Find out what foods are the most popular for Independence Day.

Top 4 Foods for the Fourth of July

Everyone has their favorite Fourth of July food. Others can't get enough of that juicy burger while others are eager to taste that warm apple pie. I personally love all of them, and will share which ones are the most popular among food critics and neighbors. You may think you know what foods made the list, but read on to find out.

  • Hot Dogs

The popularity of hot dogs can be credited to one man. Nathan Handwerker was his name, yes THE Nathan from Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs! Nathan Handwerker, a Polish-Jewish immigrant opened his first hot dog stand in Coney Island on Coney island in 1916. At first, people didn't buy his food. German immigrants brought frankfurters into America in the 1800s. But it wasn't till Nathan dropped his price to 5 cents a hot dog that people began to talk. Lloyd Handwerker said that business was booming by the time Depresion struck. "You could feed a four-person family for less than 50 cents," said Nathan's grandson.

The Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, an annual Fourth of July tradition, will see hundreds of hot dog consumed.

  • Hamburgers

The hamburger is a close cousin of the hot dog. The combination of warm buns with a juicy red meat, accompanied by toppings and bread, is enough to make my mouth water. But this grilling favourite dating back to 19th century, has come a very long way since a simple patty between two pieces of bread. Learn more about the history of the burger in America.

  • Potato Salad

This famous side dish originated in Germany. German and English immigrants introduced recipes for this dish, as well as other popular foods in the 19th century. Many Americans have a favorite recipe. This versatile side dish includes celery, onions, boiled eggs, crispy bacon, and more. It can be made with yellow mustard or mayonnaise.

  • Red, White & Blue Foods

You'll always see at least one dessert in the red, white, and blue colors of our American flag. Americans love to make patriotic foods for the Fourth of July. Whether it is cupcakes or fruit arranged in the shape a flag. The tradition goes back to the early 1900s, when foods like Star cookies and Stripe Cake were served.

Shop for Seasonings to Prepare Your Patriotic Party

You want the best for your barbecue, your hamburgers or your grandmother's potato-salad. My advice is to stay away from the spice aisle at your local supermarket. These bottles contain preservatives and seasonings that are dated, so they may sit on the shelf for several months before being added to your shopping cart. How long has the product been on the shelf? Who knows? It's for this reason that I recommend you find a store that specializes in spices. Spice Station Silverlake is where I shop for my own spice needs. You can find everything from salt and pepper to spices that are less common in the East. Spice Station Silverlake has all the spices I need. Visit them today. I guarantee you won't regret it.

Patriotic No-Bake Spiced Berry Pie

This recipe is just as beautiful as it is delicious. This recipe will become a hit at your next Independence Day party. This recipe tastes as if you have spent hours on it.

This pie's unique ingredients are what make it stand out from the rest.

Almond Flour and Almond Meal: What is the Difference?

Almond meal can be substituted for almond flour and is versatile enough to be used in baking, cooking and even making nut-free meals.

Almond flour could also contain gluten making it difficult for some people to digest. It is important to avoid gluten-free products if you have celiac or other digestive disorders.

Almond flour may not be considered a "superfood", per se, but it contains healthy fats as well as fibre, protein and vitamin E.

The almond meal provides nutritional benefits such as magnesium, iron, zinc and manganese. It also contains vitamin A, B1 (thiamin), C, and folate.

Almond flour is made from almonds and contains monounsaturated fat acids. Almond oil, however, contains polyunsaturated oils. Both types lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and increase HDL(good cholesterol).

Almond flour also contains antioxidants like phenolics and flavonoids. These compounds are effective in preventing oxidative damages caused by free radicals.

A study published by the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry revealed that almond flour had an antioxidant activity equal to that of blueberries.

Almond flour is typically sold along with almond milk, which is fortified to add additional nutrients.

How To

How to store cooking spices?

Here's how to store your cooking spices for maximum performance. First, let's understand how foods are stored.

Spices are stored in airtight containers away from the light because exposure to light diminishes their flavour. This is because oxygen reacts with organic compounds like those in spices to cause oxidation.

To avoid oxidation, spice should be kept in dark cupboards. If these conditions are not met, spices will quickly lose their flavour.

It is the best way to preserve spices' flavours by keeping them out of direct sunlight.

To create a flavorful drink, you can add spices and herbs to water. To make a cinnamon-flavored drink, combine two teaspoons of ground ginger with half a cup of warm water. Stir and mix well. Add a squeeze of lemon juice and serve immediately.

Dry herbs and spices can also be used in soups, stews or casseroles. Simply sprinkle the spice mixture evenly over the dish and sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.

If you have leftover cooked vegetables, fruit, meats, poultry, fish, shellfish, eggs, cheese, bread, crackers, cookies, cakes, pies, or puddings, they can be added to your favourite recipes as snacks.

To get the best flavours from fresh herbs and spices, cut them or tear them and add them to hot foods. It is also possible to freeze herbs and spices in muffin cups or ice cube trays. Once frozen, transfer to freezer bags or zip-top plastic bags.
