The organic food sector is growing faster than other segments of the food supply. If you examine the data closely, you will see that organic foods have grown steadily in consumption since 2009.
According to OTA's data, organic products sold in supermarkets grew at 14% between 2010 - 2011.
This is because of consumer demand for healthier products, which explains the rise in organic food sales across all age categories.
However, younger generations are leading the charge when choosing organic food. Millennials are twice likely to choose organic food than the baby boomers. Young adults below 35 years of age account for 25%.
Is organic meat better?
This question is probably answered if you've been paying close attention. However, the truth is organic food is gaining popularity at a time when conventional food is falling out of favor.
The reason why organic foods continue to rise in popularity is that they are healthier for us. In addition to being safer for our health, organic products also help the environment by reducing pollution and waste.
There are two sides to the coin. Organic produce takes longer to grow, and it requires more resources. Organic food can be more expensive than its nonorganic counterpart.
Organic meats are generally more expensive than conventionally raised animals. But, you can reduce the cost of organic meats without compromising quality.
One way to save money is to buy locally. Buy locally grown vegetables and fruits to help keep prices low. Farmers receive incentives to grow healthier crops.
You can also look for deals to reduce costs. Many organic products can be purchased at a discount.
Finally, another way to save money is by eating less meat. The feed required to raise cattle can make meat production expensive.
There are many reasons that organic food is better than regular food for our bodies, and also for the planet. However, it is important to remember the price.

Organic foods: Are they safer and more nutritious?
Organic foods are made without the use or synthetic fertilizers. They are grown in natural environments without artificial inputs (fungicides/herbicides/hormones, antibiotics or genetic engineering). Organic farming methods include crop rotation, cover, composting animal manure and recycling wastewater.
The USDA National Organic Program (NOP), established in 2002 to regulate production, handling and processing of organic products sold in the United States. NOP regulations make sure that organic agricultural product conforms to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, organic products must not contain prohibited substances like pesticide residues or genetically modified organisms.
In the U.S., there are two types of certification programs available for producers who want their products labelled "organic": one for farmers and ranchers and another for manufacturers. Both programs require an annual audit of the operations in order to confirm compliance with stringent standards. There are several certifying organizations that offer these services. These include the CCOF Certified Organic Farmers & Ranchers as well as Quality Assurance International and the American Grassfed Association. These three organizations provide third party verification of farms following strict guidelines on environmental stewardship. labour practices, and animal care.
The USDA's Economic Research Service estimates that organic agriculture was responsible for $4.7 billion of 2013 sales. Retail spending on certified organic products reached nearly $1.5 Billion in 2013. This is a 23 per cent increase from 2009. The number of grocery stores that sold organic products increased 12 percent over the same period. Spending on organic produce was up 29 percent, but only 1 percent on meat, seafood, eggs, and dairy.
Although organic food can be more expensive than regular food, many consumers feel that its quality is well worth the additional cost. Consumer Reports conducted a 2015 survey and found that 88% would pay more if organic food had better nutritional value. Health Affairs published another study that found organic food eaters are less likely than those who consume conventional foods to have health problems such diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
There is no evidence to suggest eating organic foods can treat or prevent any diseases. However, some studies have suggested that they might be beneficial for your health as they may reduce your exposure of pesticides and contaminants. A review of 31 studies that were published in 2010 found that organically raised beef has significantly lower levels than conventionally raised beef. A separate analysis of eleven studies published in 2012 led to similar conclusions.
According to a 2014 report by the Environmental Working Group, the incidence of foodborne disease caused by E.coli, salmonella or listeria monocytogenes, E. coli and E. coli O157H7 was lower when organic chicken, non-organic pork, beef, lamb and milk were compared. After 2006, when USDA required stricter organic standards in animal raising for human consumption, the group noted that E.coli O157 was less common among children and adults.
